    Booting Windows from a network

Thanks for the info, miksmi, and welcome to StorageForum! 8) I'm thinking along the lines of booting into DOS via CD, loading the network drivers, mapping the remote folder where the Windows files are stored to drive C:, and then starting windows with the "win" command. I tried it once...

    Power Measure/Rating? Cost?

The only way to know exactly is to hook each machine up to a wattmeter. My 1.5 GHz machine with 3 hard drives uses ~100 watts. A PII with a single hard drive will use maybe 80 watts. A Pentium or MMX will use maybe 50 or 60 watts. A 15" or 17" CRT monitor uses up to about 100 watts. An LCD...

Suggestions for hooking up cable internet

Interestingly, Netperf tells me I'm only getting 32Mb/sec transfers either way but I transferred a few GB of data (mostly large files) yesterday to the slower machine and I averaged about 5 MB/sec. I'm guessing I could probably approach the 10MB/sec figure you mentioned between two faster...

Best I'm able to do now from my machine is ~5.5MB/sec to a P200 machine and ~4.5 MB/sec from the same machine. I did get close to 7 MB/sec when transferring from my brother's machine. Except for my brother's machine, all my machines use the same NIC which uses a Realtek 8139 chipset.

    Booting Windows from a network

As some of you may know from the tech support forum I recently set up a small LAN. After playing around a bit and searching I was able to create a boot disk (Bart's network boot disk) that lets me boot into DOS and maps the drives from a remote machine to another drive letter. Theoretically...

Thanks again, Fushigi. In the rush to set up and test my LAN I had forgotten about tweaking my mom's PC for maximum download speed. I had done so for my PC soon after setting up everything. Anyway, tweaking a few settings increased the download speeds on my mom's PC from about 2100kbs to 2800...

Suggestions for hooking up cable internet

I bought my mom's machine upstairs and connected it to the router with just a 3 foot cable. No change in transfer speeds, which is at least a good sign that there's nothing worng with my cabling. So far it seems like this connection maxes out at ~4.5MB/sec. I suppose unless anybody has any...

Suggestions for hooking up cable internet

I updated the drivers and removed the dial-up and dial-up VPN adaptors. I had already set the speed to 100Mbs/full duplex. No speed improvement using Windows file copying (still stuck at ~3 MB/sec) but I did get a slight speed improvement when transferring files using Total Copy (my transfer...

Thanks Fushigi. That came in handy. Internet connection sharing worked for all the machines with no problem but file transfers were a little more problematic. 16:9 vs. 4:3 Format for New HDTV

I'll be faced with a similar decision when I buy an HDTV next year. I'll probably choose a 32" or 34" wide-screen over a 36" standard screen for the simple reason that more and more is being shown in letter-box format. Most letter-box programming will actually appear smaller on the 36" than on...

The router came today along with three new network cards. Setup was easy. First I took out the old NIC (10 only) and put in the new one (10/100), installed the drivers, powered down the cable modem, powered it back on, and restarted my machine. No problems-my connection was fine. Next I...

Getting Hard Drives out of Computers...

Bad idea for a variety of reasons. For starters, if you accidentally get any liquids on the boards while they're operating you can probably kiss them goodbye (note that most liquids don't harm circuit boards when they're unpowered-I've cleaned urine off taximeter boards and they've worked fine...

I just tried a couple of online connection speed tests. Naturally, the closer the server is to NYC the faster the connection. Results varied from 711 Kb/Sec to 2679 Kb/sec. The latter result is about 60 times what I usually got on dial-up. Depending upon the site and time of day my download...

[NEWS] - Toshiba claims fuel cell breakthrough

100 mW for 20 hours = 2 watt-hours. That's about what you can get out of a 2000 mAh NiMH AA cell. I know this is a first generation product but I'm hard pressed to see any advantage over standard rechargeables other than the "instant recharge" feature. However, I've seen 15-minute...

    I need a new TV

I'd have to say yes. I saw side by side comparisons at Best Buy, and even standard flat screen TVs can't compare with HDTVs, and that's with a regular NTSC signal. Large screen regular TVs look blurry close up but HDTVs don't. They're almost like looking out your window. As a result, I plan...

Why capital punishments is required for cop killers

If we really wanted to seal off the Mexican border we could. Fact is that we don't because big business likes cheap labor. As I mentioned in another thread my friend's taximeter business has to compete with others hiring $1 an hour labor. Short answer is he can't legally, and if not for the...

    CCD cameras and nighvision/IR LEDs?

It probably should. I think color cameras use the same CCD devices as B&W ones, but selectively filter the red, green, or blue light going to the CCD depending upon whether it is a red, green, or blue pixel. The filters probably let through enough IR so that the camera remains sensitive to...

    Something Random

Actually, when I was commuting to college I probably spent a good 3.5 hours a day on some type of rail vehicle (either commuter rail or the subway). It was preferable to the alternative of sleeping away in noisy, filthy dorms. And cheaper as well by a few thousand dollars.

    CCD cameras and nighvision/IR LEDs?

Part number is SFH-487-3. The camera uses 21 of these in three series strings of 7, driven at ~100 mA. The only data I could find on them was Vf=1.5 @ I=100mA. Since most LEDs these days are about 10% efficient (state of the art in a lab is around 35% efficient) at converting electricity into...
  47. J

    CCD cameras and nighvision/IR LEDs?

Not necessarily. The IR LEDs in the remotes are pulsed so that they send out an appropriate signal to the receiver. Thus, they're not operating at 100% duty cycle. They may also be operating at way less than rated current in order to conserve batteries. I'll see if I can find the specs for...
  48. J

    CCD cameras and nighvision/IR LEDs?

For visible LEDs brightness is measured in mcd but this spec is meaningless for IR LEDs which emit at invisible wavelengths. Thus, they are generally rated in mW and beam angle. For a given mW output a smaller beam angle will be "brighter" but will have a narrower field of vision. I would say...
