    Question about a GPS

I bought a couple of the 255W and have seen the 255WT for $80 recently in a retail store. Some of the newer auto GPS units are a bit thinner, but I'm not sure the xx5 series qualifly as clunky. Normally I run a GPS on battery power and avoid the 12V cigar adapter except when driving long...

    question Adaptor cables

Do you mean an SFF type breakout cable? A single channel SATA connector is the same as that for SATA. Some embedded controllers support both SATA and SAS, but some don't. Normally if it supports SAS that will be indicated in the literature.

Quality of which are poor? The 100-400 has significant limitations, but the 70-200/2.8 II is an exemplary zoom for example. The 70-200/4 IS is excellent as well, and none of the 70-200 L lenses are anything like poor.

    dSLR thread

There are no 70-300 fixed f/4 lenses. There was a Sigma 100-300/4 that I do not much like. Some other fast zooms in that range are the three versions of 200-400/4 Nikkors and a few varieties of Sigma 120-300/2.8. They are all useful for some purposes, but none are less than 6 lbs. I disposed...

Actually this may be next on the list. :) I'm not so thrilled about the $250 tripod mount ring. I think the old lenses will have to suffice for the D7K initially. I'm curious to see if something like the 16-85 will hold up to more pixels.

    D-link DIR-655 = Garbage / Don't Buy One! (v. DNS problems)

I very rarely send anything back to the manufacturer for service. If the retailer won't accept it for a refund and value is not high, usually it is off to the bin. ;) In your case it was ~$70 IIRC, which has caused more pain and suffering.

    Samsung 2 TB, eco-5400 rpm

I have not had a problem with Windows version 2.0.6.0 in ~6 computers and they all have a RAMDisk. I have not tried it with Win 7 yet, if that is a potential source of the problem.

Normal staff were only working ~40 hours, not on weekends as I was. Access to daylight was a ridiculous requirement for every room. In some cases it just was not possible, e.g., a tiny 6 m2 final process room, so procedures required that nobody could be in the room more than 2 hours per day or...

Years ago I worked in enclosed or semi-underground buildings. In some winters I rarely saw the sun for weeks on end. In Europe there were some crazy laws about access to daylight, which made facility design difficult. It was my second facility and first that I had full control over the...

    question Upgrade HD Worthwhile

Sure. I tested a 32GB X25-E in my ultraportable back in 2008. ;) That one had the 1.2GHz ULV C2D (4MB L2) from April 2008. It was faster with the SSD than a HD, though not exactly fast at anything. Today it would be considered slow for the UP class. However, the permanent modification to...

    Question regarding SAS controllers

Is that an entry level job or not? "Understanding of" has a broad range of meanings. I don't hire anyone with less than 5 years of experience anymore (preferably 10-15), but an established company should have a process for entry level employees and some sort of training program.

Heh. Around 1977 I stood on a closed toilet while trying to do some interior finish work. The seat broke and rotated, and I hit a glass partition with the full force of my body. I was in pain for three days and damaged it in the process. Of course now I'd probably be in hospital. :)

No, but sometimes ellies stand on their hind legs and reach up into the trees with their trunk. Total reach is surprisingly high. Obviously they don't do that unless there is a food shortage or something interesting up there. Something is reminding me of Amarula tonight. Wish we had some.

SSDs - State of the Product?

SSDs in general are not very mature and not so unreliable, excepting perhaps the latter Intel drives. What choices are there in HDs? One of every five Samsungs is deefctive from teh get go, Hitachis are noisy, hot and have low STR, and Seagate is just teh suck. :(

Sandstorm has been around for a long time and the drives are fairly new. Why don't the fools have a production firmware yet? Of course I read complaints about the Corsair force, but I only had problems in RIAD. Are the Callisto 40 SSDs bad too?
