SSDs - State of the Product?

The alignment process isn't that hard. You don't need a floppy either. You just put the drive in another machine (where it's not the primary) to set it up.

And this relates to my post how?

    Go Dell Go!

Will they even still have parts for a 3+ year old system? I've heard of people sending in their systems and getting new machines back. I have on site service, so I don't expect that's going to happen for me.

Kodak T-MAX P3200 & Cosmic Radiation: A Match Made in Hell

I'm not sure I share your skepticism. There seem to be quite a bit of talk about the susceptibility of high speed film to cosmic radiation. From Kodak's website:

    Go Dell Go!

So, my Dell Inspiron E1505 just assumed room temp. I was using it in my lap while watching TV and I glance up at the TV and glance back down at the system and it was off. I did some basic trouble shooting, but it's completely dead. So, I just spent the last 45 minutes returning it to as...

Kodak T-MAX P3200 & Cosmic Radiation: A Match Made in Hell

So, I just need to vent, and I guess you all can learn from my mistake or laugh at me. Apparently, T-MAX P3200 film is susceptible to cosmic radiation which causes the film to become fogged over time. As a result it can't be stored long term, even if frozen. Unfortunately, prior to knowing...

    Hitachi 2TB, 5 platters :P

I bought a few 1.5TB Seagates for about $100 each around last Christmas. I think Dell has run a pair of them for ~$200 a few times recently as well. $200+ for a 2TB drive, especially ones with the slower spindle speed is nuts.

    Hitachi 2TB, 5 platters :P

Hitachi / IBM have made 5 platter drives intermittently for quite a while. The 75GB Deathstars had 5 platters. I think their first 1TB drives had 5 platters too. I know there are lots of others they've made too. Personally, I'm waiting for an affordable 2TB drive.

So, I had to partially take part of my newly acquired used Elan 7N tonight to repair the latch for the door. It looks like it was dropped on an upper corner (there's a slight flat spot in the finish) and part of the latch mechanism was broken and jamming the latch. This cause the latch to only...

It is light, but that's not necessarily a selling point IMHO. A polycarbonate len mount isn't exactly the most durable thing in the world. ;-) Sometimes a little extra weight and some metal can be a good thing.

    Affordable graphics cards

They've announced them, and they're reportedly already shipping in OEM systems. The GeForce GT220 and G210 have 7.1 HDMI audio like the ATI cards. However, it's unclear if they will be sold outside of OEM systems. :cursin:

Well, my 2nd EOS-3 + PB-E2 came today. The ebay seller used the word "Flawless" to describe it. From what I've seen so far that was an understatement. I don't see anything on or in the camera that would indicate that it's even ever been used. There isn't the slightest wear indication...

    Netbook for the wife

I'm probably most interested in an 11.6" Ion / Atom powered system, or perhaps even a 11.6" CULV Core2 system. Long term the 1024x600 resolution screen on my Samsung N120 has turned out to be a deal breaker for me. I find myself not wanting to use it due to the limited screen real estate. I...

I'm not too hung up on the specs. It mostly came down to the fact that I don't want to spend $500+ on a used 1V. I got my EOS-3's (each with a PB-E2 grip) for less than $500 combined. The Elan 7N was only $75 shipped.

    SLR Thread

Sorry, I made a mistake earlier. The earlier EOS 1's had a gimped AF system if you use slow glass. The EOS 1N had only 1 cross point in the center which dropped to normal precision horizontal lines only with glass slower than F2.8. However, the EOS-3 and 1V have 6 normal precision cross type...

    SLR Thread

I'm not really interested in the 1V. It's still too much $$$ and the AF system would be a bit gimped with most of my lenses. I'm don't really plan to use my Elan IIe any more, so that will leave me with two EOS-3's and the Elan 7N. This way I can keep a few different film speeds on tap. :sunny:

I picked up my Elan 7N yesterday from work where it was in a box waiting for me. The build quality / fit and finish doesn't seem quite as good as the other Made in Japan Canon's I've used, but I guess that's to be expected from a Made in Taiwan model. Still, it seems to be a much better camera...

    Hard Disk for Thinkpad R51

Run away from that Transcend SSD. I tried one in an older Dell notebook I had and the extreme slowness of certain things that were write intensive drove me nuts despite its speed in other areas. I replaced it with a short stroked PATA 320GB WD and am much happier.

My last ATI experiment was a 4550 for my HTPC. At the time ATI didn't have a proper EDID parsing implementation in their drivers so I couldn't get any audio to my receiver. Supposedly more recent drivers have corrected this, but I'm not buying another one to find out and risk the restocking...

I think it's some of both. From what I saw most places were not selling cutting edge stuff, but cheap stuff. It's quite a fascinating place. You can find little booths (I hesitate to call them shops) that specialize in all sorts of electronics parts. One guy will have nothing but capacitors...

Also people selling multiples of something. Someone selling a lot of 3 of something will typically not sell anywhere near 3x the price of the auctions of 1. If you happen to want multiples or are willing to resell the extras it can be deal time.

And for the record there are no deals at camera stores in Shinjuku or Akihabara. The prices on things were completely absurd. Here are a few examples: ~140,000 yen (~$1478) for the Canon EF 70-200L F4 IS ($1025 @ B&H) ~100,000 yen (~$1056) for the Canon EF 17-40L F4 ($700 @ B&H) I was also...

    Ebay sniping service suggestions?

Items that don't have a lot of bids generally have a low price relative to their anticipated market value. This leads to lower bids from other snipers and bidders who think they will get a bargain. This leads to a reasonably valued snipe being much more effective. For example, a used camera...

    Ebay sniping service suggestions?

I think there's some method that allows for the seller to cancel the last bid of their shill bidder if they should happen to outbid the real bidder. Having not sold on ebay, just bought, I'm not real familiar with the intricacies of selling, but that's what I read.

More often then not ebay / paypal sides with the buyer. Paypal is basically worthless when used outside of ebay in terms of buyer protection, but when used inside of ebay it's pretty solid.

Well, for buying some used stuff it's the place to go. For example with used camera equipment you'll get a far better deal on ebay than you will from KEH.

    Ebay sniping service suggestions?

I'm not so sure about it being the most effective for objects whose value is not well defined. I think it's most effective for items that don't have a lot of bids. Frankly I like sniping because it eliminates the ability of any other bidders to react to my bid. If I bid $150 early for...
