Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

FWIW, I agree that a fridge is not a good location for a CFL. My opinion is due to temperature and usage patterns, not because of the mercury though.

I have a BlackBerry courtesy of my job. It's got push e-mail too. :p I'd rather not have it, but that's not an option.

120mm Case fans with adjustable speed - recommendations?

Unless I wanted to rip all my DVDs, Blu-rays, HD-DVDs, and have them "online" I have no idea what I have that could possibly need that amount of storage, but then again maybe the folks with the crazy amounts of storage have different uses and content.

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

What, the mercury is going to leach out through the glass? :skepo: Fluorescent tubes have had mercury in them since the beginning. I haven't noticed a bunch of mad hatters running around.

SSDs - State of the Product?

You could roll your own. It's just several SSD's on a PCIe x8 (or similar) RAID card. Grab a Dell Perc 5/i, 4 60GB OCZ Vertex SSD's, RAID-0 them, and bam...

120mm Case fans with adjustable speed - recommendations?

That doesn't exactly sound like a server with 2 GTX295's. My server sits in the dark in the basement and rarely has the monitor turned on or keyboard used.

120mm Case fans with adjustable speed - recommendations?

That's a lot of fans. Exactly what do you have in that thing? My main server has two 120mm fans for ventilation. I'm not sure exactly what they are. They came with the Lian-Li case. The lower one is a little noisy. I'm thinking to replace it. It also has an internal 92mm fan blowing...

No idea. I know Merc doesn't like them. I stopped buying them a while back and went to Seagate and Samsung.

120mm Case fans with adjustable speed - recommendations?

I replaced one of the 120mm Scythe S-FLEX SFF21D (800RPM) in my backup server with an Antec Tri-Cool set to medium (~1600RPM) and temps on the CPU and HD's dropped about 5C. The Scythe's are great, but my backup server with a 3.0gHz Prescott P4 and six 7200RPM HD's generates too much heat. The...

    3ware 7506-8: The tale of a quirky RAID-5 implementation

The Perc 5/i is a monster. The 3ware is kinda ho-hum. Even after seeing the Perc 5/i's performance, had I known about the registry tweaks for the 3ware 7506-8 it would have been more than adequate in my main server. I wouldn't have felt the need to upgrade for speed. It was just over half...

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

That depends on the driving circuit of the LED and how cheap the components are in it. The ballast in CFL's is what fails because they're super cheap. If a LED bulb uses something equivalent they won't last their rated lifetime either.

It might depend on their orientation. Certain bearing types can't be used horizontally.

WTB: Intel Socket 478 Retail HSF's

ARGH!!! I bought two of these last Thursday before noon local time and the seller didn't even print the shipping label until today. Judging from how late I got the notice I don't think the postal service is going to see them until tomorrow. Good thing I'm not eager to get this machine...

    Corrupt files after network transfer

Are you pushing or pulling across the network? FWIW, I found GigE network transfers sped up immensely when the gigbit NiC's were no longer on the 32-bit PCI 33MHz bus. PCIe x1 gigabit NiCs are great (most NiC's on motherboards are now PCIe). Interesting enough one of the gigabit NiCs in my P4...

Now you'll never know if you solved the problem or not because you don't have a confirmed procedure that manifests the error.

    Corrupt files after network transfer

I disagree. The failure of the verification of the burned DVD would seem to point to data corruption in the storage subsystem, not the network (unless he got a super rare bad DVD blank and also has a network data integrity issue). FWIW, Windows file sharing tops out at about 47MB/sec over...

    Corrupt files after network transfer

I'm not sure any of those thing clear your storage subsystem. There's no way to know there wasn't corruption on those tasks. Take a mp3 open it in a hex editor change a few random bits and play it back. I'd bet 99 times out of 100 it plays back fine. That doesn't mean it didn't have...

    Corrupt files after network transfer

Well CPU Burn-in checks for errors. I've never had it fail, but it's great to check your cooling and that your power supply is up to the task. It probably won't help you find the cause of your problem. That would be a serious problem in my opinion. I assume you burnt the data on your new PC...

Do you have a 3rd computer you can use to see if it's the old or new system? Also, I'd check to see if you've got jumbo frames turned on only one of the two system. (I'd suggest you keep them off)

System clock loses time like crazy.

My biggest problem as I see it now is that often the sync to time.windows.com or time.nist.gov fails. :( I've switched it to pool.ntp.org. Hopefully that works better.

Yeah, I thought about that too. I should probably sync at 25 and 55 and let my recording overhang by at least 2 minutes either way.

System clock loses time like crazy.

I'll have to check the motherboard, but I think it has a non rechargeable battery. This wouldn't be much of a concern, but this machine also records broadcast HDTV that I watch, so the clock needs to be right. My current plan is to have the clock sync every 30 minutes on 27 and 57 since my...

System clock loses time like crazy.

The system clock on my server loses time like crazy. It's always behind. It's a lot worse in XP x64 than it was in XP x86 (32-bit). Any ideas on what could be causing this? It seems like heavy disk I/O causes it to get worse. Just to give you an example the system is set to sync to...
