For a small home in such a moderate climate as you mentioned, a modest heat pump would probably work fine if there is no gas utility. IME, goofy homemade systems are often not worthwhile and not so good for resale.

Difference between Hitachi 0S03230 and 0F12460?

The 3TB 7K3000 drives I have use 5x 600GB platters. Perhaps the lower capacities can be made with 1Tb platters or there will be a B or C version. If not, there will be 7K4000, etc. drives later.

One 980X system can easily reach over 300 watts without the monitor. Why do you have to use resistive heat? Don't you have a furnace or something?
  5. LunarMist

    Something Random

What is the difference? All of the power into the computer is dissipated as heat either directly around the case or within the room. If the computer is on anyway, that can reduce extra heating requirements, but it makes no sense to use a computer only for the purpose of heating.

Difference between Hitachi 0S03230 and 0F12460?

Do you think WD/Hitachi Thailand will be in full operation that soon or just that Seagate/Samsung will crank up the Chinese output?

    WD 1TB 2.5"

I finally bought one after news of the Thailand disaster. Transfer rates and higher than the Samsung and access times are better too. :) I hope it performs reasonably better in the computer.

Difference between Hitachi 0S03230 and 0F12460?

All of the ones I have are the 0F12460 part number and were made in the Thailands. I hope Hitachi has alternate suppliers. :cyclopsani:

Digital audio recorder - Zoom H1

I have the H1 too. I think that was in August of 2010. The sound is pretty good, but the construction is quite cheap. Battery life is excellent with L91 cells and it can be powered indefinitely from the USB port, even during recording.

I don't what trucnated my posts. Shipping has been a disaster for a few weeks now. Apparently the UPS has changed routes and the delivery time makes it practically impossible to receive packages or get them at the stations. :porc: Some of the devices are far too large for the under table...

    question Printer - Scanner

The purpose of this device is to quickly and easily print on plain paper for boarding passes, tables/lists, internet pages, etc. I don't want to have to take the cover off of the 17" inkjet photo printer every time, not to mention that it uses some ink from the 8x $50 cartridges when starting up.

My cheap printer/scanner/fax died today. Now I need on the type that prints and scans, not necessarily faxes. Essentially it needs to print on both sides and scan from a feeder. My usage is limited to a few pages a week. For reference the XL inks were 1/2-1/3 full in the printer that died...

That was a big deal a few months ago. The idea is not new and can be extremely useful in principle. The problem has always been the limited amount of useful information reconstructable in the OOF areas. Apparently it has been improved, but not yet to DSLR IQ levels.
