    3TB HD from WD

Hardware and I'm REALLY, REALLY, REALLY PISSED right now! I bought two HD203WI's from a vendor on ebay and they sent me two HD204UI's. :bibber:

    3TB HD from WD

I'm aware of that and didn't mean to give the impression that it could boot. I was simply speculating that the 3TB WD drive could be used under Win XP x64 without any issues despite it being unsupported by WD.

    3TB HD from WD

I had a hard enough time finding 8 of them to buy let alone any deals. I guess I waited too long. I ended up buying 2 each from 2 different vendors and 4 from a third vendor. The 2 orders of 2 have shipped, the 3rd order of 4 hasn't. I really hope it does since I'm not sure I can find...

    raid 5 rebuild issue

Whatever you do, make sure you set the new mobo to "RAID" in the BIOS before connecting the drives and powering up the system with them connected. If you boot with them connected and the BIOS set to AHCI or IDE the controller may overwrite the metadata on the drives and then when you change it...

    3TB HD from WD

Yes on the newer controller. However any OS that supports GPT should work. With a new RAID controller (that allows for proper alignment of advanced format drives) you wouldn't need to align anything with the OS since the controller will take care of that. However, it's hard to say if there...

    3TB HD from WD

That and you can't align a drive on a HW RAID controller so it's got the same problem as every other advanced format drives there.
  8. S

    3TB HD from WD

It looks like you can use diskpart to align a GPT partition, but you'll need the utility from Server 2003 SP1 if you're running XP x64. Alignment looks to make a huge difference in the performance of the drive in SR's review. Specifically the IOmeter random transfers and 4k write latency. It...

    3TB HD from WD

FWIW, the 3TB WD seems like a dog. You also got to love how they're leaving the XP x64 users blowing in the wind. XP x64 supports GPT and should have no problem with the drive (aside from the 4k alignment issues). Of course I have no idea if you can align GPT partitions under XP x64, so maybe...

4K sector drives and RAID cards

So, I've been told by a vendor that Samsung has discontinued the HD203WI and it seems the supply is fast drying up. :(

    LCD Woes

Be thankful your monitor isn't like the Dell 1908FP I have a work. It's a complete piece of crap. The color is so inconsistent from corner to corner. Sitting an arm's length away the colors shift quite noticeably over the small angle variation edge to edge and top to bottom. I don't think...

Having said that, I don't see how it could be that since it's a laptop there were no signs of dead insects in it or any sort of nest or hive. Further the quantity and locations of the particles were such that I just can't see it being insect crap. For a PC used daily and carried around in a...

So, I completely disassembled my "new" 4.5 year old work notebook today and broke out the soldering iron on it. The VGA output was intermittent depending on the angle of the cable. I touched up all the leads from the connector to the PCB with a soldering iron and now it's working fine again...

There was no financial cost. I started a spreadsheet back on 3/8/2002 to keep track. What I do is write the mileage on the receipt after I get gas and then stick the receipt in the center console. When I get motivated every few years I take all the receipts from the console and get the...

I do want to buy a used car

They took ~700,000 sub $5k cars off the market that "poor" people would have bought leading to a scarcity of sub $5k cars which in turn drove up prices. I'm not saying C4C was the only factor that drove up used car prices, but it clearly was a prime participant. Granted I wouldn't likely be in...
