    HTPC build

There are people on AVSforum who claim to see the stutter from the repeated frame every ~40 seconds. I also have a few friend IRL who are in HTPC's who complain about stutter on Intel solutions, but have no issues with the ATI cards. Personally, I haven't tried an Intel Clarkdale solution, and...

    HTPC build

If you're looking for proper blu-ray playback equivalent to a standalone player it's a pretty big deal if you're looking to take advantage of the high quality audio found on the discs. Without it, you're limited to analog outputs, encoding it to DTS or DD and passing it over TOSlink or co-ax...

    HTPC build

The integrated graphics in the Clarkdale based processors support HDMI 1.3 and bitstreaming of the advanced audio codecs. (as do Fermi based nVidia cards and 5xxx Radeon cards)

    HTPC build

If the content on the disc is encoded at 23.976FPS and you're outputting it at 24FPS, where does the extra .024 FPS come from? It comes from a duplicated frame every so many seconds, which gives you a stutter. Intel's answer is full of crap since stand alone blu-ray players don't have the same...

    HTPC build

With WinXP Pro you could get by with 1GB of RAM. BTW, there's a hack to enable remote desktop server support on Win 7 Home Premium. I don't think that HTPC build supports passing the advanced audio codecs on Blu-Ray discs via HDMI though.

    HTPC build

I guess you didn't look very hard. link As I said it doesn't output 1080p23.976 (like it should when you set it to 1080p24) and as a result it has a stutter problem. However, if you're not after proper 1080p24 and don't plan to use anything other than 1080p60 / 1080i60 / 720p60 it shouldn't...

    HTPC build

I think it's because it doesn't support 23.976FPS. I haven't looked into it too closely, just know that's what been widely reported at AVSforum that it's not the solution to use if you want 1080p24 (really 23.976) so the video will stutter as a result every so many seconds.

    HTPC build

I like the HD Homerun assuming you're talking about OTA HDTV or clear QAM. Keep in mind the integrated Intel solution doesn't do 1080p24 correctly.

    CD TO MP3?

If you want FLAC files instead of mp3's... Get FLAC 1.2.1b here. Install it and as above set EAC to use a User Defined Encoder on the External Compression tab. Point it to FLAC.EXE (which is where the installer placed it). For additional command-line options: use -6 -V -T "ARTIST=%a" -T...

    3TB HD from WD

That depends on the RAID controller. Any real hardware controller requires you to create an array even on a single drive for an OS to see it. At which point the data is unaligned and likely nothing you do will be able to realign it because the blocks the RAID card will be too coarse.
  11. S

    3TB HD from WD

Well, you can't align the partitions when they're on the RAID controller because no utility can see the drive(s) until you create an array on them. By then it's too late to align anything.

    CD TO MP3?

Assuming you only want to do this once, and you want to make sure you've done everything as correctly as possible, these instructions are for you. Use EAC and Lame 3.98.4 (don't get any alphas) Unzip LAME somewhere, and install EAC. Let EAC go through it's configuration wizard (make sure you...

As far as I know, the HW RAID "incompatibility" is a 4k cluster issue. Not being able to boot from them is an (unless you have a properly implemented EFI BIOS) is a GPT issue.

    NAS storage question

Given the scenario you describe each of you having an external drive is about the simplest way to go. The next step up would probably be something like a Drobo since it has redundancy built in, but they're a lot more than a basic external drive. IMHO, you don't want to backup over wifi.

I don't like Kohl's clothes. I thought that as of several years ago they really lowered the quality. My rule of thumb for Kohls is unless it's on clearance, I don't buy it. And, never, ever, ever buy regular priced clothes at Kohls. They typically start clothes out at 50% off within a few...

    WMA to MP3

Well, since the iTunes tracks are DRM infested even if he copied 'em he won't be able to use 'em since they're locked to the account on the other PC (I think that's how it works). They're also aac files (not sure of the extension). I wouldn't recommend transcoding from one lossy format to...

Foobar2k will do it with the exception of album art. Your other option (pay) is DBpoweramp Music Converter. It will keep album art. iTunes doesn't make WMA files though so something seems a bit off with your story.

So my "new" work laptop is a well used Dell Latitude D610 with a Pentium M 1.86gHz with 2GB of RAM. I didn't check how big the hard drive is. I'm hoping it's only a temporary machine, but being that today was my first day I didn't see the need to crap all over it and be too demanding.

They're quite reasonable for a good quality light. According to some of the more particular members of CPF they're cheap Asian crap because they're not Surefire. :smack:

Have you cleaned the contacts? Made sure the switch is securely screwed in by the retaining ring? In terms of a replacement, I'd recommend something from 4Sevens, but they're a lot more $$ than the Ultrafire.

I don't think we're going to see any SATA drives larger than 2TB (HD203WI) that aren't 4k sector drives.
