    Android Tablets

Which product out there has a MIPS CPU? The processors in these things typically hardware accelerate video decoding either in the CPU core with special extensions or in the video core. I sat next to someone on a plane who watched movies on his iPad. The video playback was flawless, sharp, and...

    Noise Cancellation

I'd suggest you look at In Ear Monitors instead. They don't use batteries, they're smaller, and have better noise canceling properties (since they're basically earplugs that play sound).

    D-link DIR-655 = Garbage / Don't Buy One! (v. DNS problems)

Do you mean you manually entered OpenDNS servers into the router, or that you've manually specified the OpenDNS servers on each machine? If it's the former, I don't see how that's going to help me given that the DNS server in the router is what dies and it won't automatically pass the IP's of...

    D-link DIR-655 = Garbage / Don't Buy One! (v. DNS problems)

The DNS server is software running on it, so I'm not sure how would a hardware defect manifest itself as a software failure that can be recovered from without a reboot? A ping from the "Ping Test" section inside the router's web interface will get the internal DNS server working again.

    D-link DIR-655 = Garbage / Don't Buy One! (v. DNS problems)

I'm not quite sure. There seem to be a lot of DNS related complaints, but most are related to earlier firmwares and seem to be centered around a feature called "DNS Relay" that mine seems to lack.

    D-link DIR-655 = Garbage / Don't Buy One! (v. DNS problems)

This is a PSA: Do not buy a D-link DIR-655 wireless router. It's a steaming pile of crap. Every few hours the DNS server in it stops responding until the router is rebooted, reinitialized, or cajoled into working. Mine has the latest firmware (2.00NA) and I've messed around with with the...

    question Keep drive powered down?

Uh... Pretty much every controller since the ICH6 supports SATA hotswap. Windows most definitely will detect a new SATA drive started once the PC is in Windows (as long as your using AHCI or RAID mode on the ICH and not IDE mode). The same goes for nVidia, AMD, and whoever else makes SATA...

So the DNS capability of the D-link stopped working again tonight. I took it out of use while I was out of town and put it back in today. Same symptoms as last time. I was unable to resolve anything, but could ping both DNS servers listed in the router's WAN settings. It started working...

    $158.99 today. The CAS 5-5-5-15 DDR2-800 is now cheaper than the CAS 6-6-6-18 DDR2-800 ($159.99) or the CAS 5-5-5-15 DDR2-667 ($159.99).

    Samsung 2 TB, eco-5400 rpm

Dropped another $5 to $160.99 today. This makes buying RAM challenging. I guess you either 1) decide to buy at a price you're happy with and then block it out of your mind or 2) you watch it closely and try to guess when you've hit the bottom. Interestingly the otherwise identical 6-6-6-18...

I'm especially wondering that after DNS magically stopped working this afternoon. I could ping my ISP's DNS servers through the router, but none of the PCs on the networks could resolve anything. Their DNS entries are set to the Dlink router (192.168.1.1). It didn't start working again until...

Cloning a HD to a smaller SSD (v. partition alignment)

Ok, well I decided to give Clonezilla a shot just now... Leave it to the Linux guys to make a free tool that does what the paid programs can't. :thumbright: Clonezilla made an exact replica without resorting to a 1:1 raw sector copy. You tell it to clone a drive to another drive without...

Cloning a HD to a smaller SSD (v. partition alignment)

I should also point out that by default Windows 7 does not install itself to the first partition of a blank unpartitioned HD. It installs to the 2nd partition after creating a 100MB System Reserved partition that has all the boot stuff in it. So, the inability of the disc cloning programs to...

Cloning a HD to a smaller SSD (v. partition alignment)

That would only work if the programs would allow for alignment of their partitions onto 1MiB boundaries. Based on what I found they align partitions they create to cylinder boundaries, so even leaving a "hole" they wouldn't utilize it in the same / correct way. It would either leave more or...

Will Dynamic Disks survive a Vista to Win 7 upgrade?

Windows XP does that too. If you have other partitions on the HD it may (will?) put NTLDR, boot.ini, and Ntdetect.com on one of the existing partitions, and not the one you install Windows XP to. This happened on my server. I had some existing partitions on the drive and erased my XP x86...
