Storage Forum New York City Tour Guide

Funny you should ask. Actually, I thought he was getting along quite well. He even said he was able to get around better by subway than above ground. Of course, he and his family still need to dress the part(i.e. wear black, the unofficial New York City color, and no, it has nothing to...

What should I do with this POS?

The Powerleap and Evergreen Pentium upgrades generate the higher frequency by multiplying the motherboard frequency of 100 MHz or 133 MHz. I think the 400 MHz Powerleap upgrade uses a multiplier of 3, so all the M/B has to put out is 133 MHz.

What should I do with this POS?

I can't tell the exact number of your M/B from those pictures, but it is definitely not a 570, since that is what I'm using for my everyday "Internet" computer. As to upgradeability, my M/B does not support 64 MB SIMMs so it maxes at at 128 MB, which is what I have(there is no built-in RAM)...

Storage Forum New York City Tour Guide

Sounds good, although as I mentioned above I don't know when I'll get around to doing some serious traveling. I'll definitely take you up on it should I go to Sydney, however. :) P.S. I really wish I could offer people coming here some spare beds, especially with New York hotels being as...

Storage Forum New York City Tour Guide

Actually, that's WTC 7 you're referring to, and it's on the block next to the main site. I think they're going to start rebuilding within a year, and it's scheduled to be finished by 2005. The main site is just about clear(the last standing beam of WTC1 is going to be removed in a ceremony on...

Storage Forum New York City Tour Guide

Mercutio, I definitely understand where you're coming from. I'm a self-described introvert myself(with new people, anyway), so I was initially a bit hesitant about the whole thing of meeting Cliptin face-to-face, but it worked out OK. If it didn't, I would just have added it to the long list...

Storage Forum New York City Tour Guide

OK, it's official. I'm now Storage Forum's New York City tour guide(an unofficial title I have bestowed upon myself), and I'll explain how this came to be. Several months ago Cliptin e-mailed me and expressed a desire to see NYC for himself. I offered my opinions on some things of personal...

    Volunteers/help wanted for a project

About the only suggestion I can come up with is to have a good back-up system in place. This project sounds intriguing, but since about 95% of the readers here have more computer knowledge than me, I doubt I can be of much more help than that.

Is the DellDude an IDIOT or What?

Sound like me. I'll listen to TV sometimes while I'm doing other things(like posting on SF and SR), but very little these days actually grabs my complete attention. That's a sad testament to the quality of programming nowadays. It's all the same garbage-inane sitcom, mindless action movie...

Is the DellDude an IDIOT or What?

The guy's a complete moron but there are still commercials I find even more annoying than Dell's. The Windows XP commercials and AOL commercials are two examples(especially AOL). I also find most car commercials highly obnoxious. They take a ugly looking piece of junk that I wouldn't take...

Is there a way to shut up Jason for a while?

I know what you mean, although you might want to check it out from time to time just in case something of interest pops up. Jason's pirates thread had some very interesting side discussions, such as the one between him and Tannin about the American versus the European airline industries. I've...

    Exciting technology

28K RPM means that the outer edge of the CD is moving at 392 mph-only about 150 mph less than a jetliner. No wonder the thing blows up! To be honest, I'm amazed they can even do 12K RPM in a 56X drive(=168 mph at outer rim, or bullet train speed). Multibeam is the only way to go, or hopefully...

    Enjoy putting the boot in?

I've honestly never seen you ever get mad like that. I actually double-checked the author's name of those posts in disbelief just to make sure it was actually you. :o I'm guessing you're the type that keeps it all in, and then finally lets loose in one huge explosion. :) I don't think...

    Unable To Save Forum Pages

I found a workaround to the problem which isn't too bad. First I save the page as an .mht file. I then open the .mht file offline in IE and save as "Web page(complete)". It saves OK that way, and it's only an extra step, which isn't too time-consuming. :)

    Unable To Save Forum Pages

Your previous reply showed up fine in my browser. Strange problem :-? Anyway, here are my complete findings regarding saving threads in IE: 1)Save as "Web page(complete)" does not work(error message "This Web page could not be saved") 2)Save as "Web page(html only)" does not work(error...

    Unable To Save Forum Pages

I can save in plain text also, but since the forums have pictures and smilies and so forth, I prefer to save in html. If you could do one thread in the final format you prefer, maybe I can eventually find the time to edit the whole bunch in that same format. I've been a bit busy as of late...

    Unable To Save Forum Pages

The topic says it all. When I try to save any forum page, I end up with a "Web page not saved" message. I'm using IE5 and Win98, and I have no problem saving pages from SR's forum which uses the same software.

    New York at night Photo

Sorry about the untimely response-I've been a bit busy as of late. Anyway, here goes: Not at all, you're merely stating your opinion, just as I previously stated mine. :) I'm really surprised my post drew the kind of response it did. I was merely trying to explain the symbolism behind the...

    New York at night Photo

    New York at night Photo

The lights will be on every night until April 11. After that, they may use them from time to time for special occasions. Just my opinion, but if I were in charge I would keep them on every night until a new replacement World Trade center was completely built. The electricity runs...

    New York at night Photo

The glow is from the searchlights at ground zero, although the pic does look a bit edited. It may have been taken on a foggy day, though. I can sometimes see the tops of those light towers from my backyard 10 miles away. Nice picture but the truth is I'd rather have the towers back. Nearly...

    How much RAM??

Re: 512 The fix is simple, just a few lines in the system.ini file: [vcache] minfilecache=0 maxfilecache=393216 chunksize=512 This is for my Win98 machine with 768 MB RAM. You can use up to 524287(=just under 512 MB) for the maxfilecache. I also have ConservativeSwapFile Usage=1 so that...

Is there a way to shut up Jason for a while?

I'm not sure if any kind of petition would be a good idea. Jason is starting his new job today, so hopefully the problem will go away on it's own. I do agree that it is becoming a distraction, and Jason's posts keep popping up like New York cockroaches. I consider this whole thing a mixed...

    World Trade Center photos

Those pictures were rather haunting, and brought back a few things, to say the least. I have 3000+ photos relating to the WTC from various sources, but most are low resolution and don't convey the sheer horror of it like those pictures do. I'm probably one of the few at SF or SR who has seen...

The future of storage technology ?

Interesting idea, but it has to be made to operate at room temperature. If the effect reverses above -23° C, you're basically screwed if the refrigeration system gives out. I think the future of storage is non-volatile RAM. There are a bunch of contenders using various technologies, and it'll...

    Cats and keyboards

That sounds familiar. Tiger jumps on the table and does the same thing with me. My sister's cat does that. Each cat has it's own idiosyncrasies. Sometimes they seem so human it's almost scary. And I really do think they're alot more intelligent than they let on. They play cute and get...

Blast from the Past 1 (Computer related injury)

Nothing can probably compare to Tannin's story, but I have an interesting one of my own. It's not computer related, but it is electronics related. First the prelude: I used to work at a place mainly repairing taximeters for about two years. They closed the New York office and laid everyone...

    Posting under the influence

I've always posted sober, but this is mainly due to the fact that I hardly ever drink. New Years and a few other holidays are about the only time I have anything stronger than beer, and even with beer, a six pack will last me a month or two. I don't think I could post drunk-one beer puts me...

    Cats and keyboards

I think it is partly caused by lack of certain oils in the diet, and partly caused by obsessive cleaning behavoir. The vet can give you a dietary supplement. Longhairs are much more suspectible to it, and our Persian has had this problem in a major way the last few years, although not...

    Cats and keyboards

Mercutio: That's a very interesting story. I suspect on some level fetching behavoir is instinctive to cats. I play a similar game with one of my cats, named Tiger, where I throw a small acorn and the cat chases it. Occasionally, she even drops the acorn near me when she wants to play. The...

    Cats and keyboards

That story about taking care of strays sounds familiar. My mom started feeding some strays. Some then had kittens, and others came once the word got out. When all was said and done, we ended up with four cats in the house, and found homes for probably 10 more. Three of them are still around...

    Poll: Anyone like to cook?

Yep, I've watched my mom prepare many Italian dishes, and most are really easy to make. Some, such as lasagna, may require many steps and take a while, but no special skills are required. Of course, you have all the pots and pans at the end... I love Chinese food myself, but I think the art...

    Poll: Anyone like to cook?

I can cook a few simple things-spaghetti with sauce, BLTs, cinnamon toast, hot dogs(I don't think that counts), anything frozen, and probably a few more things that I don't remember. I don't dislike the cooking part too much, but rather the cleanup part, so I don't cook very often...

Floppy Drives: What is your verdict?

Floppy Drives: What is your verdict?

There are times when you need them, especially when working with older hardware that just can't boot to a CD. On most machines, I would say CD-RW is largely taking over the function formerly done by floppies, but until Mt. Rainier compliant hardware is in nearly all machines, the floppy will...
