    How to print unprintable PDFs

Ghostview 4.4(which requires Ghostscript 8 to be installed) displays and prints the pdfs just fine. Ghostview and Ghostscript can both be obtained here in case anyone else has a similar problem. Thanks everyone for pointing me in the right direction. :D

BTW Blake your avatar hasn't been showing up the last few days. IE tries to download the image for a while and then just gives up. No red x there, just a blank as if you don't have an avatar.

Text selection is also disabled or I would have tried that. I also tried print screening but my monitor only goes to 1024x768 so the result is practically unreadable(which is the reason why I wanted to print these pdfs in the first place). Magnifying and reading in Adobe reader is annoying to...

    How to print unprintable PDFs

The program in the link works, but since it's a demo it only converts the first 10% of pages and substitutes blanks for the rest so I'm back to square one. To buy the program is $60. :o Are these people nuts or what? $60 for something I'll use maybe 5 times in my life? It's only a very...

My feral cat on a bad day...

Why not relocate the elephants instead of killing them? Or send them to a zoo? Admittedly a zoo is not the best option, but I'm sure the elephants would prefer it to being dead. There has to be a better way to control elephant populations than just killing them. Maybe we need a pachyderm...

    How to print unprintable PDFs

I have a few PDFs that I downloaded which I need to print so I can read them. My screen is too small to make reading a 20+ page document comfortable, and I want to have a paper copy for easy reference when I'm away from my machine anyway. The problem is whoever created these decided not to...

    Trolling 101 My new book

I can't believe how many posts some of those people at AR have. The highest I saw, without looking too hard, was over 14000. In not much more than three years. Don't these people have a life?

My mom has it. My dad and I have Time Warner Cable. The DirectTV box has coax, audio/video, S-video, and DB-15 data connections. I don't know what the data connector is used for. It also has a phone jack which needs to be connected to a phone line only if you want to order PPV movies(which...

    A/C winter wonderland

Ice on the cold side fins can happen even with a normally functioning A/C and a clean filter. When I bought my bedroom AC in 1994 one of the first things I did was to change the range of the thermostat. Most mechanical thermostats have a one on two screws inside for this. One controls the...

    "Alice Capone" ....

Tiger ate a moth once. My mother didn't want to be kissed by her for a few weeks after that. Kimba used to chase and kill the roaches we had when we used to live in an apartment. He didn't eat them, though. Even he had his limits. He did like to eat flies. :puke-l:

I'll third that. I also think that Friends is another pointless, awful show which never should have stuck around this long or been this popular. Actually, almost anything these days on the big three networks(and most of the stuff on the FOX, UPN, and WB) stinks. Even Enterprise is getting a...

Intel may owe over $600 million in back taxes

Sales and excise taxes. Easy to calculate, easy to collect. You just need to exempt certain items(mostly items that are already exempted from normal state sales tax now) so the tax doesn't hit the poor who can't afford it. Another good thing about these types of taxes is that you'll be...

I've known females who were more obsessed with toilet humor than Beavis and Butthead. Besides, I think it's kind of funny seeing a group like this talking about their bodily functions. You would never expect it. I was on one site where somebody started a thread called "How big is it?" That...

Intel may owe over $600 million in back taxes

This just underscores how unnecessarily complex our tax laws are, especially regarding corporate tax. I've heard that in many cases nobody, including the accountants and IRS, is really sure exactly how much tax a corporation owes. It depends on how the various laws are interpreted. One thing...

The Norelco isn't as close as a blade, but with blades I got too much irritation to shave every day. At least with the electric my face doesn't look like a battlefield. Changing the blades on my Norelco once a year(if I lubricate them weekly) seems to work for me. My beard isn't that heavy...

Best Buy Special-50 pcs 4X-12X CD-RW for $19.99 after rebate

That's one of the main reasons I use CD-RWs for backup. I like the idea of using them like a giant floppy rather than having to use Nero whenever I need to back up a few files. You just can't do that with CD-Rs. Sure, you can have multisession CDs, but for a few MB of data at a time this is...

    Ford escort vs tree

You're pretty much dead even at 55 if you hit a wall or tree. Besides, most highways are set up with guard rails to prevent that sort of thing. Going 100 on two lane highways with trees ten feet off the road is nuts. The guy in the Escort was unbelieveably lucky. If he has any sense he won't...

Actually for me it's cycling skills, not driving skills. I never had a license but I did read that certain types of people, like skiers and cyclists, as a rule tend to drive very fast. You're right of course, but an accident at 65 will kill you just the same as one at 110. Past about maybe 50 mph, collisions just stop being surviveable with current restraint systems. That's not to say we can't do better, but most drivers wouldn't tolerate the systems used in race cars. Most...

I know I did when I beat a guy who had been bullying me for years with a crowbar. I was 11 at the time. I snuck up on him and just started whacking him in the head repeatedly. He spent some time in the hospital and never bothered telling anyone how he got his injuries. Too embarassed...

Yep, CD-RWs are much more picky about speeds than CD-Rs. You can try to burn a CD-R at pretty much any speed you want regardless of its rated speed. Whether it works or not depends upon the disk and drive. CD-RWs, on the other hand, won't burn at anything other than their rated speeds. My...

    Can't sleep, what to do

One of the articles says most peoples kidneys can cope with 12 liters of water a day. I've heard that it's actually healthier to go a few times a day as it means your digestive system can better flush out the poisons from your system. Do feel too bad. My leg strength comes from years of bicycle riding. I basically ride a bike like I'm driving a Ferrari so that tends to require lots of force to the pedals and plenty of well-timed shifting(and braking when some idiot in an SUV cuts in front of me). Tea would put me and Coug...

I still remember from reading loads of Car&Driver road tests in the 1980s that even the most miserable econoboxes(i.e. diesels with 30 second 0 to 60 times) still maxed out at least in the mid eighties. Nothing made in the last ten years is even remotely that slow so I'm sure practically...

[NEWS] - Prescott to dissipate over 100W

Better yet, lower the power requirements enough, and/or use the case for passive cooling of the processor and hard drives, and you get rid of the fans entirely. The point of having no fans is that you have a sealed case(no dust) and only noise from the drives. This can only help from a...

Processor or Fan; Chicken or Egg.

Short term, no. Long term, maybe but not likely. Brushless fans use mosfets to power the various motor windings in sequence. When the motor is spinning the back EMF increases the resistance of the windings, limiting current to a safe value. If the fan stops spinning the winding resistance is...

    Another death in the family

Merc, you're exactly right that our relationship with our pets is special because we don't understand literally what they are saying to us, yet they somehow get the message across. Suzy had her own repertoire of sounds, as did Tiger. Over time I knew when they were hungry, happy, sad, wanted...

[NEWS] - Prescott to dissipate over 100W

One of the problems with migration to a smaller transistor size is increased leakage current, meaning that even if the clock speed is zero the chip will still have a substantial power dissipation. Besides that, the other reason behind the large power dissipation is obvious-the 3.60 GHz clock...
