I can see how the costs would build up. I bought about 25 BlueRays and a couple of players a few years ago, but only played 2 or 3 discs.

    NAS Drive

I thought the point of using RAID 6 is that there could still be a failure during rebuild and the array would be OK. I've done the rebuild twice with RAID 5 and now once with RAID 6. No errors have occurred. The NAS drives are 10^14 and the primary data drives in the computer are 10^15.

    NAS Drive

No, I just bought 94TB in 8TB and 10TB drives in the past two months. I was going to move the drives and add a new one to the empty slot, but thought the power was off. Since I will not be using the hot spare a single will be used for quick incrementals. I'll add another 8TB drive to the RAID...

    NAS Drive

I thought the power was off. The Synology LEDs are fine whereas QNAP 831X LEDs are ridiculously dim. The better models have a display panel that would make the power state more obvious, but LEDs should be reasonably bright. None of them are designed for the bedroom at night. :)

I goofed due to dim lights and now the array is rebuilding. Does it really matter which drive slot is used if the change is done with the power off?

I want to buy a new car

I don't know how such surfaces would hold up and be economical to build. The trucks destroy asphalt like it's nothing and even the concrete sections have issues after some years. Dirt, snow and ice would hurt efficiency. In rush hours the roads would be rather shaded too. :)

    NAS Drive

With RAID 6 of 6 drives the failure rates should be fairly low. I think that could go up to 8 drives and still be fine. Maybe I'll get another drive when the capacity exceeds 80% or if the 8TB drives become cheap next year.

    Best movie you've seen

Sure, but that is not the only ridiculousness. The film has holes on the molecular level. :) At 12km there are only so many options for 5 legs.

    NAS Drive

In addition to increasing the copy speed via the 10Gb ports, I obtained the QNAP for the 8 bays. I could only use RAID 5 with the first NAS (5 drives). Now I am using the RAD 6 (6 drives). I will not add a hot spare if it is indeed running. I thought perhaps it could be in there and the NAS...

Do you maintain personal secure storage?

Sure, but most people don't have second homes or want to pay for the powered storage facility. For the cost of the powered storage, I can have several sets of offline data. A couple of drives in a safe deposit box is an option for one set. In any case the hardware has a limited life. I have...

I want to buy a new car

You are still missing the point that gas is cheap and all the other things needed for electric just don't make it very economical compared to the hassle. I think there was something in another thread about the established car companies waiting to jump into electrics when the time was right...

Do you maintain personal secure storage?

Most average people are clueless and if they don't have proper IT support, eventually have data loss. I try to help a few people, but complexity and cost turn them off. I have set up backups for family members, but they listen to me. :) I know one person that has critical, old-time software...

Do you maintain personal secure storage?

Drives can fail, but that is the point of redundancy and backups. The 7-platter Hitachi and Seagate enterprise helium drives are designed for 24x7 use for five years. The helium allows lower power and cool-running drives even at 7200 RPM. Get a couple of He8 drives and run them in RAID 1 if...

Do you maintain personal secure storage?

I moved from DVDs to external FireWire HDDs around 2003 when drives fell to $0.50/GB. In the SATA II era I generally used eSATA or the internal hot-swat equivalent. Eventually I moved to external USB 3.0 while retaining some internal, power controlled SATA/SAS backups. SATA has been around...

Do you maintain personal secure storage?

I make full backups every 2+ years and replace media every five years. Obviously that doesn't work for the archival industry, but I expect all my works to go with me since the PW is personal. The micro metal fiche thing is interesting, but has far too low data density, especially for...

How many years do you drive 15-20K or more? At 12K or less there is little benefit. The depreciation cost and insurance are the bulk of car cost, not fuel.

Do you maintain personal secure storage?

Data is data. There isn't any I can accept losing. I have over 250TB of hard drives and 10TB of SSDs but far less data. There should be at least 4 copies and more of some data. More than half is cold storage and I like that mix.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Five years or maybe ten. The vertical flash actually uses larger cells than some of the predecessors, but you should look at some other media for permanent storage. In 40 years maybe you need M-disc or one like that.

    NAS Drive

There is no stripe option described in the 428 page user manual and the internal help is useless as well. :( QNAP documentation and support are rather poor from everything I read. Every search seems to land in a forum where IT people are showing some Linus command lines or something like that.

    NAS Drive

No, the 10Gb adapters are working fine at 10Gb. However, there is no power to the 10Gb port on the NAS when it is off, so WOL is not possible. The Gb port on the NAS does stay on and accepts the WOL. However, when both the 10Gb and 1Gb (through a switch) are connected, the transfers default...

The red light would not turn off until after the reboot. It's not too bad for a cheap RAID 6 NAS with 62% full 8TB 5400RPM drives. Of course it is only for use as the backup target.

    NAS Drive

No matter what I do the default goes back to the GbE after the power is off. Is it possible to connect two switches in series, using one to turn on or off the access to the main switch? I would apply AC power to the secondary switch just for the WOL and they turn it off during the boot process.

Thanks. I'm not seeing a difference within the variation of the benchmarks. The X520-DA2 had the setting on 9014, which is not exactly the same as the NAS, but I doubt that matters. I'm hoping the red light will eventually stop flashing.
