Maybe it's just me or the city I live in, but that's not something I would let stop me if they were OK with it. The good thing with people that age is most don't have kids. I agree 100% with your feelings on that:

Well, that was the mistake I made, sort of. I didn't outright turn them down, but I was really bad at showing my feelings (or really great at hiding them). So was she, to some extent. I still regret that to this day, having someone who was perfect for me in every way and not having anything come...

    Citibank really, really, really sucks!!!

My neither. I just don't have anything important enough that it needs to be stored offsite. That includes my data. My rationale with my data is I'm almost always home. In the unlikely event something destroyed the house it would most likely kill me. If I'm dead, it doesn't matter if my data...

    Politics

Don't forget to add roads and driving to that. The right wing almost never saw a highway expansion it didn't love. They love socialism when it comes to their private automobiles. Free highways, free curbside parking (even in cities with expensive land), wars to keep gas prices low, etc. But of...

    Politics

That would also have the secondary effect of making it more cost effective for most freight to go by rail instead of truck. This in turn would considerably reduce the repair bills for highways. In most of the country probably true. I've seen a lot of light rail systems which are boondoggles by...

    Politics

NYC sends far more money to Washington and upstate than it gets back in spending. Without those burdens we can easily pay for what we need and probably lower the overall tax burden to boot. Besides that, the gas tax doesn't even cover the maintenance cost of highways, let alone pay for transit...

    Politics

That's kind of what I want to happen at this point. I think the US is done, dead, finished, going the way of the old USSR. Electing Trump will be like a bullet to the head. Death will be quick, probably not all that painful. Hillary will be more like getting shot a bunch of times, none near...

    8k TVs and Monitors

A 12K display? Don't give the panel makers any more ideas. I have a gut feeling we're at the start of a resolution war where things will get crazy. I can see it now-try our new 50K 55" panel with a resolution of 1000 ppi AND 16 bits per color. Never mind that you probably don't need anything...

    Up to date Malware Removal

Does any of that work with Yahoo? While Yahoo doesn't explicitly block people who disable ads, it seems they keep trying to load junk which pegs the CPU at 100% and more or less makes the computer unresponsive for a while. I've manually killed the process in Task Manager each time it occurs but...

    "THE" Cloud

No, the cloud really does exist: This is where your data goes when you send it to "the cloud". Unless of course this guy gets to it first (yes, he's real too and he's running the NSA):

    8k TVs and Monitors

I sit about 15" away from my monitor. Any further and I'll need glasses which introduces its own set of problems (distortion, annoying to wear, etc.). I do have great closeup vision for anyone, never mind someone who's pushing 54. I can read the numbers off 0805 resistors, for example. For those...

    8k TVs and Monitors

When I looked last time I was at Microcenter, I can definitely still notice pixels on a 4K 27" display, albeit barely, at the distance I sit from my monitor. 8K eliminates that issue altogether. It also eliminates the problem on displays up to perhaps 40". That said, I'll probably get a 24 to...

I bought a 2TB drive back in 2010. I still have over 800GB free and there's some duplication of stuff on that drive. I'd say overall I doubt I have much over 300GB of unique data, perhaps 400GB at the most. Then again, I haven't played much with video. That could potentially eat up a lot of...

    SAMSUNG SV843 2.5" enterprise 960GB SATA III V1 MLC VNAND $169.99

Yes, that's exactly what it is except it plugs into the USB 3 header on the M/B. And I was getting up to 250 MB/sec when I plugged my SATA to USB adapter into the USB port on this device. My USB 3 flash drives all achieve advertised speeds as well when connected to the USB 3 port.

    SAMSUNG SV843 2.5" enterprise 960GB SATA III V1 MLC VNAND $169.99

As strange as it may be, the problems seem to have a been a port incompatibility issue. The drive enclosure uses an AS Media 1153E USB controller. Apparently this doesn't play nice with other USB controllers. I had been trying it on a USB3 port in a USB3 card reader connected to one of the USB 3...

I just tried it with my 500GB 840 Evo on the theory maybe it doesn't work well with Enterprise drives. Same issues. If it works for you but not for me then I may have just gotten a bad unit or a bad cable. It's a pity I don't have a spare USB 3 cable to try it with. My former next door neighbor...

    SAMSUNG SV843 2.5" enterprise 960GB SATA III V1 MLC VNAND $169.99

Once you add in the shipping and sales tax you're probably over $10 for the cable. I'll just live with the slower transfer rates on my SATA to USB adapter and build some sort of case for it. It looks like there are a number of other drive enclosures available with UASP but after getting burned...

    SAMSUNG SV843 2.5" enterprise 960GB SATA III V1 MLC VNAND $169.99

I don't really have any regular 2.5" HDDs to test it with. Technically speaking, the enclosure works in that my computer sees the drive. It's just slow as molasses. The SATA to USB adapter which came with my Samsung 840 seems to work just fine other than the STRs being limited to 250MB/sec...

    SAMSUNG SV843 2.5" enterprise 960GB SATA III V1 MLC VNAND $169.99

The drive enclosure stinks. I'm getting inconsistent speeds between maybe 15 and 125 MB/sec which vary each time I plug it in. I've heard some reviewers say the included cable is lousy but I don't have another USB 3 cable on hand to try. I'm going to the local MicroCenter to see if they have any...

    SAMSUNG SV843 2.5" enterprise 960GB SATA III V1 MLC VNAND $169.99

Same here. These drives have HP in the part number, so it may be they had custom firmware to work in an HP server but perhaps there were issues with that firmware. It might be nice to install whatever firmware Samsung has for SV843 drives but given the inability of Magician to recognize the...

    SAMSUNG SV843 2.5" enterprise 960GB SATA III V1 MLC VNAND $169.99

I'm wondering about that myself, especially in light of the fact these seem virtually brand new. Probably the "refurb" part is due to the fact the drive may have been powered up once or twice by the customer, so it can't be sold as new. But it begs the question why are there so many enterprise...

Samsung SM843T 480GB for $94.99 Not as good a deal as this in terms of $/GB but still a great price for those looking to spend less than $100 on a drive. BTW, I ordered another SV843 today. I figured it'll come in handy sooner rather than later.

    HP Buying Samsung's Printer Division

I don't but it's probably more cost effective to have a professional photo printing service do it unless you have large numbers of photos. HP Buying Samsung's Printer Division

SSDs - State of the Product?

Well, Merc thinks we'll probably have sub-$200 1 TB SSDs by Xmas, which implies $400 2TB drives. The smaller sizes already make lots of sense. 2TB may not make as much sense now, but once we get to under $200/TB it'll probably start to. The 4TB Samsung still costs way too much. Purely...
