I just ordered some "cheap" systems...

I'm quite alright with the CPU util being high, I just don't want it to affect the quality of the playback. It's currently at the point where it's noticeable to non-geeks, and that's pretty bad.

I just ordered some "cheap" systems...

Yes, I was thinking about those. I used to have the Sapphire "ultimate edition" of the card which was fanless. However, I'm concerned that it produces too much heat for this case. This is a SFF chassis with a large PCI sound card between the graphics card and the only fan. I don't think there...

I just ordered some "cheap" systems...

Great. It has an AGP port and very limited airflow, and I won't put more fans in. What video card should I look at to give it some more punch?

I just ordered some "cheap" systems...

My first performance beef with the cheap systems: Playing an XviD video stream is showing average of 80% CPU useage and dropped frames. Is this because of the crappy onboard video? I'd think a Semperon 3100+ should handle some multimedia?

    Speculation.....

Yes. Flashing the BIOS will remove it's contents and then copy new contents on. Unless the virus was written to specifically take advandage of Dual-BIOS features.

I would feel a lot worse if the price drops had hit already, but Newegg hasn't dropped their prices yet; and I got that 4000+ up to 3.2Ghz :o .

System won't boot with USB Key/Mouse attached

These actually don't. The only USB-related switch (that doesn't disable the plugs) is for whether USB drives should be treated as a floppy or a hard drive. Reseting BIOS does nothing, flashing to latest does nothing.

System won't boot with USB Key/Mouse attached

Not yet. I still have the stock PSU in there, which should be fine for a 3100+, 2.5" HDD, and 512MB.

System won't boot with USB Key/Mouse attached

None of my new Shuttle XPS systems will boot if there is a USB keyboard/mouse attached. PS/2 works fine, none at all (plugging in USB after boot) works fine. If the USB is connected to any port, either the progress bar halts permanently (normal mode) or safe mode halts at agp30xk.dll or...

3 of 4 new disk bad? Scsi parity errors on 3 SATA disks.

I just build 2 servers and keep a manual copy on each. That protects from all possible failure points. 1. Drive/array failure 2. System Failure 3. Housefire (other system is in another building) 4. Accidental deletion (when I bother to maintain my backups.

3 of 4 new disk bad? Scsi parity errors on 3 SATA disks.

Yep, I've been doing JBOD arrays for this reason. Add drives as you need them, they don't need to be the same size, and you get one big (and growing) volume.

A boat like Merlin in our conditions down here will race with perhaps two dozen people aboard. While going to windward all but 2 or 3 will be sitting side by side on the high side of the boat trying to keep it level. My 24-footer is best raced with 4 people on board. 20 knots isn't that unusual...

I actually had a pretty wild night last night. Worked until 3PM, raced my boat until 8PM in Monterey, then drove to SF to dance until about 2AM, then drove home. I'm kinda tired at the moment.

    Something Random

Yep, my boat was designed for a single-handed race from SF-Hawaii. It competes regularly in transpac with 2 people. I just don't know anyone I could tolerate for 11 days. It's design is acutally based on my other keelboat (Cal 20), but has been lengthened considerably and widened moderatly...

    Boot from Compact Flash

2.5" drives are the noisiest thing in my computers, and I don't consider the write count an issue. The number of cycles is pretty high these days and I never keep a system around for more than a year or so.

Merc, Thanks so much for turning me onto this card. I just spent the last hour standing at my workbench listening to songs instead of working. This machine is destined for my comfortable desk in less than an hour, but I couldn't put the headphones down. Really amazing.

Really, really easy. I reccomend VMWare's products over the others; easier to use, faster VM, just better. Download VMWare Server (free) and set one up, it's really straightforward. If you have any questions, post them here.

S939 is dead, long live S940 (Mk. II)

The OS does need to be coded for it, but since we all use XP/2003 (the sensible ones, anyway), and both support dual-core, than that's taken care of. Re: Apps. You don't need an app that supports dual-processors (multi-threaded), you just need 2 or more threads. That could be 2 games of...

    Intel strikes back

Maybe. But it is quad-core, and I thought I'd read elsewhere that it would be compatible with any of their AM2 chips, so it will be the cheapest way to dual-core/quad-proc we're likely to see. Me? I want a faster core, not more of them.

How about this... Before you can have a child you need to have 4 men and 4 women sign that they never will. You need to prove your worthiness among your peers, and will be held accountable. If you fail in your responsabilities, the child will be passed over to another member of the group.
