    RMA this drive? Consensus please.

I haven't used Samsung drives in quite a while (capacity issues), but IIRC, the Nidec motors were quieter than the JVCs.

    E85 Myths and Misinformation

We are the most populous state and by far the most profitable. This is our natural place ;) Not to derail, but I think one primary with all candidates (regardless of party) simultaneously nationwide would make a lot of sense. Then we get an election between the top two.

    Having problems posting

I had the same problem last night posting in the "More Vista" thread. I found that using the "Advanced" editor worked, but when using the quick editor caused the same error Mark is describing. This also happened when doing an edit (until I used the "Advanced" page to edit).

    July 22nd Intel price drops

Out of curiosity, did the other Intel chips go down as much as expected, or did they also do a bounce?

    July 22nd Intel price drops

Yep. It seems a lot of people told their friends to buy on July 22nd, and either didn't notice that they price wasn't where they expected, or couldn't wait any longer even though they would pay more.

4 computers, no internet, one hub.

Considering routers are basically as inexpensive as hubs, I'd put a router in and let it's DHCP/DNS work for you. No special settings on the workstations, no remembering IP addresses, just a plug-n-go situation. Plus if they ever do get an internet connection, it is that much easier to transition.

    July 22nd Intel price drops

Well, thanks for the inside scoop, Coug. Looks like Intel got what they wanted with their press leak. If you don't mind, put in a word here when the price resumes it's downward slide.

    More Vista nonsense

I run it because I need to support it. I know XP better than the back of my hand, I can walk people through whatever needs to be done from memory. I've been able to do this for a long time because I started using XP as my full-time workstation when it was RC1. Now I need to know Vista, so I run...

I know EAC has user selectable degrees of error correction. If your optical drive is one on their special list, it has an even more paranoid redundant scanning technique.

PC will not boot with HD2600Pro card.

That definatly looks like a power situation to me. I recently had an Antec 550W power supply in my system, and after adding a few more drives, experienced exactly what you are describing. It would boot correctly every 4th or 5th try, and warm reboots worked most of the time. I upgraded to a...

Yes, but only because I had them sitting around. My next set will certainly be a pair of SSDs in RAID-0. And for those who loathe RAID-0, I have 3 36GB raptors in an array for my games ;)

In my experience, it isn't. With the following caveats. 1. You need modern hardware. a. 2GB+ RAM b. 3D accelerated video card with significant ram c. At least a modern 7200RPM hard drive 2. Depends on what (or how many things) you are doing. Many tasks don't use multiple cores, so you would only be using 1/4 or your CPU. If you have a lot of things going at once, it will really pay off.

    Meta-tagging video files?

I have a fairly large collection of video and audio files. The reason such a large audio collection is still useful is because of the ID3 tags, and comments that I add, being searchable(sp?) and easily modifiable. I would love to be able to add words / descriptive fields to my video files. Are...

While at work, do you use an attached monitor/keyboard/mouse? I find anything less than a 19" 4:3 to be sub-optimal for work. I've grown quite attached to the 22" 4:3 I have at home. outer diameter hard disk and partitioning

I created the RAID-0 array, then partitioned the first 50GB (10GB per drive) for the OS. Of course, you should never put important data on a RAID-0, so the rest of the drives are not particularly useful. IIRC, Linux now supports software RAID that allows the first chunk to be RAID-0 and the rest...

outer diameter hard disk and partitioning

I too thought it was outside-in. Seagate Tech Paper (PDF) I've done it in the past; building a large array of drives, creating a RAID-0 with the first 10GB or so of each. It is pretty quick, but SSDs are quicker.

    BlueDisc Ray

There is a maximum speed at which a plastic disc can spin without shattering. It is roughly equivalent to 52x for CDs and 18x for DVDs. You won't find faster drives, because physics prevents it. If you were waiting to buy into BlueRay until it became commodity hardware, knowing how fast they...
