Well, the "Add new hardware" manager detected and installed the correct driver, having the drive and disk appear under My Computer without a hitch. Windows Update promptly stepped in, did some driver updates of it's own, and now it isn't visible anymore :crap:

HD DVD from XBox 360 in Windows...

Has anyone else played around with this? I picked up one this afternoon and it was perfectly plug-n-play in Vista. Now I'd like to get the movies I bought onto my HDTV. Anyone have suggestions?

If you have two identical drives, and one behaves significantly better than the other, I would consider replacement. Run the WD diagnostic tools on it, to see if it has any technical issues.

Virtual OS safer than Real OS?

Pretty much. There was a post a while ago about someone who said they had a way to infect the parent OS, but it's still a ways out I think. If you don't want to do a whole virtual OS, take a look at sandboxie (coutesy of Merc)

Barracuda ES, worth the price over 7200.10?

My last shipment from Newegg was great, including the hard drives; wrapped like MaxBurn's. My complaint is that they left $10k worth of parts on my doorstep. I'm not worried about thieves around here, but it was baking in the sun. The packing tape was a little gooey when I opened it.

    Upgrade advice: mobo, cpu

Wow, that is an old system :p Things to keep in mind: New motherboards typically have just one PATA port, so your optical will be going there. Sticking an SATA adapter on your HDD shouldn't be a problem, provided the SATA controller doesn't require special drivers (most of them don't anymore)...

    Apple makes the hate list

Ok, I'll bite. Had a problem with a 2003 domain controller that went up in smoke. Not the only DC for the domain, but it did hold a couple of the roles and was primary DNS. Called MS, payed $300. They had 3-8 people conferenced in at any one time from different departments, taking turns with...

    Apple makes the hate list

It's funny, there are some companies I just don't think about calling. Even if I know it is their problem, I don't consider calling them part of the solution. In this category are commodity hardware vendors and most major software companies. But I think this is one space where MS has it right...

NEWZ: 8 Critical MS Patches Coming on 11/Oct

I don't think the vulnerability is known, MS just knows that it is wormable. Once the patch is out, however, it won't take long to figure out what the vulnerability is. Therefore it is a race; can you get the patch out to all of your machines before someone is able to write and deploy code that...

    UMPC comparison

I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the ASUS. I might even stick a 32GB SSD in it, as the HDD is clearly the bottleneck(even with this one, running XP). It has the fastest processor, most RAM, largest screen, and built-in GPS. I wish it ran at the higher 1024x800 resolution, but it really is...

    UMPC comparison

I don't know if anyone else has been looking at these things, but I think they have real promise. Tablets and convertibles were just too big/bulky for handheld use, but these work really well. I presently have the cheapest one as a loaner, and I really like it. Below is the comparison sheet I...

Nope, I can't hear it; that is the point. The Dynamat is to make the optical drive as quiet as possible. And it is pretty darn quiet.
  31. ddrueding

    Best onboard video?

I would argue that it is still harder to cool, even after the budget has been maxed. This system already is loaded with Dynamat extreme and has the quietest 120mm Scythe S-Flex 800rpm fan soft-mounted internally with ducting. The 2.5" SATA hard drive is acoustically insulated and soft-mounted as...

    Best onboard video?

That is actually better than I was expecting, and good enough. HTPCs are supposed to be small and silent; that is much easier to do without unnecessary components. It already has a tuner card, and adding a video card would increase the cooling needs significantly, making it that much harder to...

    Best onboard video?

Just for grins I tried the onboard video on a board I had sitting around (Gigabyte GA-945GZM-S2) with a 2 Ghz C2D and 1GB RAM. It can handle DVDs fine, and 720P with minimal issues, but 1080i stuff falls apart. For my needs, I suppose this could work. I'll just need to downsample the...

Yeah, I know onboard sucks. But for this application (HTPC), an expansion card isn't an option. Barracuda ES, worth the price over 7200.10?

I have never had a problem with Seagates from Newegg. Only WDs, and I blame WD. I love the Sony Mini USB thumbdrives, but they are quite slow. All that I care is that they are fast enough to stream MP3s off of. On another note, does anyone here know the exact spacing for the mounting screws on...

Your anti-virus software: Which, why, how?

Barracuda ES, worth the price over 7200.10?

Loving them. Even with just the 6, I'm getting 130MB/s reads and writes. I've never had an issue, even though they are presently 50C+ 24/7 (due to poor case design).
  45. ddrueding

Barracuda ES, worth the price over 7200.10?

Since I knew I was building a RAID-5 array, I started with 750GB drives. Now as 750GB drives come down in price, I can continue adding without having too many drives total. I'm falling below 400GB free on the main array, so I'll be adding another drive soon.

    Automotive Fuses from Harbor Freight

Harbor Freight is primarily a brick and mortar establishment, so buying stuff like this from them is not far-fetched. They are notorious for selling the cheapest stuff they could find in China; no quality control at all.

Barracuda ES, worth the price over 7200.10?

I'm thinking that the only differences are firmware and possibly cherry-picked motors/actuators. I don't think it could possibly be worth the price difference unless performance/reliability were at a serious premium.

    Water Cooled Hard Drives

I'm considering water cooling because of the space considerations. In order to have 11 (soon 12) hard drives cooled quietly, there needs to be a lot of space around them.
