    More Vista nonsense

Ugh. No thanks. Adoption of that is going to be horrible. People may like to screw around with their desktops, but those in charge tend to make reasoned decisions WRT production servers. What carrots are the offering? DX10 and Aero aren't going to cut it.

The pictures I'm posting I don't consider to be excellent examples of anything; I'm just looking for (and receiving) constructive criticism as I go. I'm sure that, in time, I'll be glad to not have these pictures featured as examples of my work.

New PC for my brother-best MB/processor combo?

The trick is that there is no way AMD fan boys would buy Intel motherboards. They have already convinced themselves that Intel is inferior for some reason, so going to them for a mobo would be unlikely.

I downloaded the latest version and gave it a spin. The ability to pull panoramas out of a folder full of files was attractive, as was it's ability to handle RAW files. But it didn't detect anything, and crashed afterwards ;)

    1GB then and now

With 21MP images being easy to produce, 16GB or RAM can be chewed through in no time. Or I can run a mid-sized office's worth of virtual servers on a single machine for testing purposes.

Finger prints would be unlikely, as this is a combination of >5 pictures. Unless you see 5 fingerprints, I don't think so. Perfect flight formation :D

Good, or bad? When I get on a plane, I know for a fact that my life is not im my hands. No matter what I do or how quick I am, it won't help me. On a train, however, perhaps fast reflexes could save me? So I should constantly be on alert, ready to head for one of the emergency windows at the...

I've been looking at Mazdas recently myself. The Mazdaspeed3 seems to be the best bang-for-the-buck in the <30k market. It's strange. When I am in my car driving and thinking of what I want, all I want is a couple year-old benz with adaptive cruise control and a quiet ride. When I'm at home...

New PC for my brother-best MB/processor combo?

If you are going to stick to XP (not a bad choice for casual use), than 32-bit is probably the place to be. As Merc said, 64-bit XP is "a magical land where no one has written device drivers", and will continue to be so as power users move on to Vista. That being the case, planning for >3-3.5GB...

New PC for my brother-best MB/processor combo?

32-bit XP will only handle ~3GB of RAM. If you put in more, it will be co-opted by the OS, and not available for your use. I'd stick to 2GB for now.

    WD greenpower 1TB drive

Merc, Let me know if I missed this. What it sounds like you are saying is that performance of hard drives really doesn't matter for most users. And what I'm saying is that the only times hard drive performance does matter for users, they are STR-limited.

    120mm case fans

If you are looking for fans with built-in speed controllers, the Antec are the ones to get. If you don't need fast fans, you can get the low-speed S-Flex 800RPM version. IMHO the 1200RPM version is too loud.
