Small retail store w/2 computer-driven registers. I'm looking for a card and software to put in one of the machines that will capture video and serve it via web interface. Suggestions on brand, e-tailor, or anything else welcome.

Thinking about myself here (not the first time). Would there be a problem installing Vista on one drive and XP on another, then putting both in the same computer and controlling which to boot from via the BIOS?

Can you create an image and restore it to the exact same hardware? If not, forget having to do it 80 times to start with, you'll have to do it every time a machine takes a dump. That really sucks.

Well, not all were shot without a tripod. These two used a tripod, but the rest are all handheld.

I think I'll let the 1.6 crop be my conservative margin. So that means that shooting 100mm, it should be faster than 1/100. Which means @ f5.6, ISO800 on a cloudy day or thereabouts? So if I want to shoot ISO400, longer than 85mm requires IS or a much faster lens.

Also, I'm looking exclusively at lenses with IS above 50mm. I don't have the most stable hands. How long a lens do you think you can get without missing the assistance?

Do you mean an 85/1.8 or a 17-85/4-5.6 IS? The latter, at 475g and $US500 isn't too painful in any respect. Though it is slow.

I'm not good enough to take workshops yet. I'm also not comfortable enough with the camera yet.

I've never had a thumb drive lose data in the laundry. It could be that in most cases I strip the case off, so it's just circuit board and chips, no place for water to stick around. Anyone else?

I believe that was Tannin's point above. You get many more shots in the buffer if you shoot JPG.

'Fraid not. Although "yeah" is technically a word, it doesn't really represent an emotion or concept well enough to be used emphatically. Sucks and dude are both capable of providing emotional context, and are therefore more powerful when used correctly, as you demonstrated above.

My Extreme IV couldn't keep up with a pano shot I was taking today. I suspect it is camera-limited in transfer rate (20D).

Very cool. I've been trying to figure out how to base jump off Mt Whitney. I love the hike up, and the views are fantastic, but my knees can't handle the hike down anymore. At 4400+m the air isn't thick enough to get away from the wall, this might be enough.

One would have happened for me already, but the tech is still moving so fast; it's hard to step in and take that kind of depreciation in the face.

This is significant. I know with my system the BIOS occasionally chooses to prioritize one of the other monitors I have connected (that are typically off). When this happens, the screen is in standby during the entire boot process, until Windows loads and finally takes control of the display...
