    Where's everybody?

Meh. I finally got some work, so I've been leaving at 7AM and getting home around 9PM. I'm currently preparing to do a brain transplant on my current workstation; anyone want to take a guess as to whether the Vista install survives going from a Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 + A64 6000+ to whatever Fry's...

    Politics 2008

Back when I considered myself a Democrat, I registered Republican so I could have a say in their primaries. I figured that steering the potential alternative was more useful than choosing between a group of people I mostly agreed with. Now I label myself a pessimist and don't vote at all.

She is the owner of this 100+ unit complex with average rent in the $1500+/mo range; she could live anywhere, but she lives here on the ground floor. She has owned it since the 60s. She even...

Free Drive Imaging Software - SelfImage

I'd never heard of it before, but it works great. Includes the ability to close the running OS both to a file or to another drive. I'm running a clone right now from one 1TB Samsung drive to another, and it is maintaining over 100MB/sec. Website

It is indeed a part of the property, but I don't want it back. The issue is that she doesn't know about it. All changes are significant improvements and are to code, but she doesn't like me and would evict if she had a chance.

Indeed. I'm looking forward to getting my own place, so I can make worthwhile improvements without throwing my money away.

    Rethinking the Meat-Guzzler

There is no way a cow could survive standard feedlot conditions unless it was pumped full of chemicals. So I'm guessing the organic beef is decently humane. Whole Foods has excellent meat, but at 4-star restaurant prices.

Rebuilding the kitchen sink today. The faucet is so cheap that it can't be serviced; must be replaced completely. The threaded gasket on the back of the p-trap had essentially dissolved and disintegrated in my hand. The apartment manager should take care of these things, but I've violated the...

Agreed. Not much you can do as far as a solution. Open Task Manager and go to the "processes" tab. Check the "all users" box at the bottom. Then go to "View" and choose "Select Columns". Add the CPU Time and "Peak Memory Usage" items. After a reboot, take note of the items that use the most of...

Those are the big players, but the bulk of the IT sector has been spread out over smaller companies for a long time. Before there was PARC, Bell Labs, and IBM. I can't imagine being that much of a drone. Unless I can at least see the top of the chain of command, I don't want to play.

I'd imagine you would want very tight control of the focal plane, so something fast. You will also want to stay out of the way, so something slightly long. A 50/1.2 would be great, but my 50/1.8 could do as well. Whose funeral?

    42" HDTV recomendations?

Depends on what you want to do with it. If all you want is to watch movies than just about anything will do. If you want some hardcore gaming action, get an 8800GT, it is awesome and great bang-for-the-buck. I use a DVI - HDMI converter cable for video and coaxial SPDIF to a receiver for audio.

It does, just to a lesser degree. Someone who makes $1M/yr doesn't use the roads, police, or schools 20x more than someone who makes $50k/yr. In fact, even though they pay for public schools, it's likely that they would pay for private schools as well.

    FairTax

It is fair. But long ago we decided that instead of just being fair, that taxes would take on a "Robin Hood" role of wealth distribution. It is (a bit) better for the society as a whole. But don't say that the wealthy paying more is fair. It's a good idea, but it isn't fair.
