I doubt I'll use the whole width, it's just that I client got a new wide-format printer for plotting, and it turns out to have 6 color cartridges and a "photo" mode. Photo paper of those sizes is insanely expensive, mounting is impossible, and where the hell are you going to hang it? I want to...

I'm still working on my "gutter light" design. Start with a piece of aluminum gutter and appropriate ends. Line the inside with reflective, heat-resistant materiel (aluminum foil?). Install lighting solution of your choice. Mount ~2 feet from the ceiling. Lots of indirect lighting. I'm...

I often think it would be good to live close to some of the folks here. My closest friends are 40 and 120 miles away, and not in the direction of my commute. We are going to visit Olga's best friend for dinner, 100 miles away, tonight for the first time in about 6 months.

Always a good thing. I found that whenever I was single I was almost desperate to get out and do something. When I was sick or stuck at home I would start climbing the walls after about 12 hours. Strange considering I get fairly anxious when I'm around large groups or even small groups of...

    32"-37" LCD HDTV Choice

I have always found the common calculation (viewing distance/2=screen size) to be too small. I find a 1-1 ratio works much better with my crappy vision.

I would blame it more on the F@H people. They have never made user-friendly-ness a priority, even on their Windows apps. There are many mainstream apps that install easily in Ubuntu.

Get the biggest that fits. Look at how long you held onto your last TV. I really like my Sharp AQUOS 42" 1080p. The colors are great, and the brightness automatically adjusts to the rooms ambient lighting (good for a bedroom). It looks to be going for about $1200 new right now, which is what I...

Photoshop won't install on my machine because I can't get SP2 installed for some strange reason, GIMP won't deal with 16-bit TIFF images, and PAINT.NET just pukes on images this large. GIMP has it open, which is nice.

Dieing 21" Hitachi 802 plus What to replace it with?

Some content is protected so it won't display unless the signal from source to screen is encrypted using HDCP. HD-DVD and BlueRay both require this, but can be bypassed with appropriate software. I haven't heard of online video sources locking it down in a similar fashion. Where did you read...

This one I don't understand. Either the fuel is being combusted for power or it is going out the back end, no? The only way to reduce the amount going out the back is to burn it more completely in the engine (hence, more power)? Or is it something in the delayed valve timing?

Hydrogen is an energy storage medium. It is inefficient in the production, but it will hold that same amount of energy forever (unlike batteries). It only has to be maintained near absolute zero if you want it in liquid form, it can be stored in a larger volume and pressure as a gas without...

    Virtualized OS & Multicore CPUs

I regularly assign VMs their own real hard drive and a chunk of real RAM, but I don't think you will see that much speed improvement trying to out smart the CPU scheduler. Besides, one of the cost savings in VMs is the ability to assign more VM resources than you actually have, letting different...

Dieing 21" Hitachi 802 plus What to replace it with?

Well, you can either have a small screen really close or a large screen farther away. Unfortunately for me, my vision gets worse at any distance more than one foot; so the size does not scale linearly. The 42" 18" away is about the same as the 22" 6" away.

PC Gaming = World of Suck
