Algae could help to meet Kyoto standard.

Not unlimited food. Just adequate to meet demand while maintaining a reasonable profit margin. With the recent hike in food prices (partly due to it's new multi-use capability), new supply is scrambling to come on-line (even in 3rd world nations). After the market has a chance to adjust to this...

Global Overpopulation: The gorrila in the room?

Assuming an unlimited supply of food, what do you do about the pollution? About urban sprawl's effect on natural habitats? Traffic? The common denominator is people.

Algae could help to meet Kyoto standard.

It isn't a terrible idea. The fact that supply is really short, causing demand (and price) to increase is a separate issue (and potentially a temporary one). It would be a terrible idea if we assumed that supply for energy will never be satisfied, therefore the price of food would continue to...

Global Overpopulation: The gorrila in the room?

Sources for info and discussion: Wikipedia: Population Growth US Census Bureau: International Database With all the talk of global warming and food shortages, I have yet to hear talk of this as the source of our problems, but I suspect that it is. Even if we are able to cut our emissions per...

Algae could help to meet Kyoto standard.

Prices simply aren't high enough to cause a change in behavior yet. Algae seems to be technically the best source for bio-fuel, but I'm afraid that the political capital of places like Iowa (where massive amounts of corn are grown) will cause this to be the source of choice for the foreseeable...

I'm adding a new drive to my data array using online capacity expansion. According to it's current progress (at 2%), it will take 12.5 days to complete. I should have added 2 drives.

SSDs - State of the Product?

You are listing average rotational latency, I was listing maximum. To accomplish a full revolution in 0.1ms requires 600k RPM. I do cede that the average is a more useful value.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I'm running the MSD-6000 series. (MSD-SATA6035-016) Difference? I didn't really look. My thoughts were that: 1) They all have the insane access time that I wanted 2) I was going to use at least 3 in RAID-0, so STR would be fine regardless

    Where's everybody?

That is something that I've been thinking of as well. Olga's been trying to get me on an EKG for months. It would be pretty simple to have a program on your computer that sent something if you didn't use it for 2-ish days, but how long would it be before someone turned off your computer? I have...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Not necessarily a lost customer. Once I can double my capacity for the same price, I'll buy again. If they can get the transfer rates to ~200MB/s per drive that would tempt me as well. Hell, I'm likely to add another drive to my array for more capacity sooner than that. I would have liked to...

SSDs - State of the Product?

<doing maths> 600,000 RPM would do the trick, if you could get seek time to zero.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Yup. I went from Raptors in RAID-0 to SSDs in RAID-0 and the difference was night-and-day. There is just no way a spinning drive will compete with a 0.1ms access time. Edit: I wonder what RPM would manage a rotational latency of 0.1ms.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I read that, too. But it just won't. It got to the drive selection, I was able to choose the SSDs and format, but the "OK" button would not allow me to proceed.

SSDs - State of the Product?

If you are willing to pay $300 and only need 16GB, get an SSD. A warning, though, Vista won't install on even a 48GB drive.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Nope, it isn't. But it is a description of the product, and I trust the quantifiable numbers. It is good enough to keep SSDs out of my high-end builds for a while longer.

Because it would get spanked. I didn't read a single negative thing about the drive in the whole review.
