Low power is one. The other is that I was looking for a really fast single core. These aren't hardcore workstations, just fast home machines. Firefox, Winamp, and Media Player Classic is pretty much all they do. Having 8 slower cores gets me nothing.

I suppose it depends on where you want to be on the price/performance curve as well. Considering you tend to hold onto your systems for a while, I'm guessing pretty far up? What would your budget look like? Do you have any components you would like to carry over?

An interesting note: Not only is the server "headless" in that it doesn't have a monitor, it doesn't even have a video card. Connecting the 3Ware card into the 16x PCIe slot disabled the onboard video, and I have unplugged the PCI card I was using to set it up.

If you are running Win7, I would go with the single big monitor. The win+left and win+right hotkeys make it more useful than a pair of smaller displays. I have multiple screens, but it doesn't benefit as much as having a big one.

So is this the cheapest Onkyo receiver that will take whatever I give it and convert it to HDMI? I would also love to have it output to two HDMI sources simultaneously (A splitter, not a matrix), but it looks like it would be cheaper to buy a separate splitter.

That is crazy. Even with 7, Office, and a full AutoCad suite, 60GB is plenty if your data is elsewhere.

Nah, a bunch of workstations. I had 30GB Vertex drives I could have offered cheap, but 30GB wasn't enough. 40GB is I guess :shrug:

Nope. Either I don't need performance and capacity (Vertex) or I do (Z-Drive). I don't bother with the middle ground that much.

Didn't know that, Merc. I never bought their stuff before the Vertex, but once they had something that no one else did, I became a regular customer of their drives. I still don't buy their RAM or PSUs, but the Vertex has been stellar.

In my experience, if it is file system related, GDB works great. If it is anything else, you are hosed regardless.

Almost. The same folks at Stanford (still supported by Audi) that won the DARPA challenges will be running an Audi TT up Pikes Peak at full racing speed, but without a pilot of any kind. The car will pilot itself based solely on GPS data and other inertial sensors. Video Link

The F-111 and the B-1 used to be incredible aircraft. This particular role is something AU needs more than pretty much anyone else (except for Russia). Perhaps developing something in-house based on the -111 tech would be a better solution?

I like motorsports, with rallying being my favorite. Pike's peak is awesome on many levels, but this is the best video I have seen on it to date. It is also the highest quality 1080P I've seen on youtube.
