    Small but Full-fat VMWare install.

Didn't resize the partition, simply deleted one that wasn't needed (from when it was a physical machine years ago). I'll have the exact error code when I get into work.

Even Better PC Audio v. empty your wallet

I remember my first jaw on the floor audio moment. The first set of speakers I'd ever owned was the original 4.1 channel creative labs cubes. Really awful, but I had no idea. My roommate let me borrow his low-end Grados...that was eye-opening. Since then I've slowly worked my way up the line. My...

    Alienware Laptop

You guys keep focusing on substance. There is nothing substantive about trying to game on a laptop.

The "move" keeps failing. This isn't good.

    Alienware Laptop

If you want a gaming laptop, image is a higher priority than performance. That means nothing is better than an Alienware.

Even Better PC Audio v. empty your wallet

Actually I was grateful you did the research, and am trying to figure out if I want to go that way. I don't think I'm up for swapping the connections to the fully balanced ones, though.

With all snapshots removed it will let me increase the size of the virtual disk, but not decrease it. Next I'll try using the vSphere vCenter Converter Standalone Client (damn that is a long name) to migrate it to my desktop and then back.

    Alienware Laptop

Alienware it is. I suppose you could go with a workstation-grade Lenovo, or the 17.3" XPS, but if they want a gaming laptop, then they really want something that looks like a gaming laptop. That would be the thing with the alien head on it.

The partition resizing is done; it had a partition that is no longer needed. The "resize the disk with VMWare's editor" is the part I'm stuck on. I shut down the VM, right-click on it and choose "edit". Selecting the disk shows everything greyed out. I know having active snapshots can cause...

I now need to reduce the size of a VM's disk. Inside the Win2003 VM, the partition only consumes the first 140GB of the 220GB disk (the other partition has been deleted). Now I would like to make the disk itself only 140GB. Suggestions?

The new version of Veeam has a neat field, when performing a backup, right below the backup speed in MB/s, it states what the bottleneck is (Source Disk, Target Disk, Client, Proxy, etc).

I'm still thinking that that car is totaled. Had he gone into your rear bumper maybe not, but that is a lot of damage at the rear.

How to deal with wind chill?

Yup, tonight it should be 31F...but by tomorrow it will be back up to 34F. That may be one of only two or three freezing nights all year.

R2 wasn't explicitly on the OK list for vCenter, so I stuck with 2008 Standard. VMWare is currently offering a 40% off deal on their VSA as part of a bundle with some Essential Plus licenses. The whole thing (1 vCenter, 1 VSA, 3 Essential Plus, all with 1 year support) was about $11k.
  20. ddrueding

    Small but Full-fat VMWare install.

Looking more closely at VSA, I can see I'm going to have a couple issues. 1. Due to the internal mirroring feature, I'll need twice (thrice for three hosts?) the drive capacity. I'm not sure whether the "backup" drives can be normal HDDs without impacting performance, whether it expects all the...

Right in one. I verified the vmdk files and they are not the correct size. Rather than re-download, I built a Server2008 machine that now holds vCenter, Veeam backup, and the vSphere web client.

Samsung SUR40, now available for pre-order

I need a 50" version to display full-size 24"x36" plans. If we can display them truly 1:1, we can use the screen as a very expensive tracing board and do take-offs. I know this is the "wrong way" to solve this problem, but it is the method that most closely represents the current process in the...

I haven't set up the VSA yet; I just installed ESXi 5.0 on a machine, connected using the vSphere client downloaded from that machine, and imported the .ovf. It automatically pulled the .vmdk files from the same location and didn't ask me any other questions.

I don't use the PCIe SSD cards in ESXi boxes; getting the drivers sorted was a PITA. Perhaps the new version 5 has them built-in, but SATA is fine for this purpose.

Quite. The Oracle 10g and MS SQL databases and their associated application servers would be the most important, and they all require 2-4 vCPUs.

I don't think storage vMotion would be a big deal if I was using the Storage Appliance; if the VMs are redundant on the other machines anyway, just shut down the clients, pull the machine, and power them up elsewhere.

Thanks Handruin for the warnings regarding FT....it looks like High Availability will be the best that my most critical VMs would be eligible for, and I don't want to splash out on HCL'd hardware. That means that if I was willing to give up storage vMotion I could get away with the Essentials...

That is my biggest concern, really. At the moment I have fantastic performance with direct-attached SSDs on each ESXi server. I know I won't get that level of performance with even the same disks attached across a network, but I don't know how big a hit it will be. I also don't know the...

It looks like I may have won funding to go all the way to "Fault Tolerance" in my VMWare configuration at work.
