    Need advise on printer

Can't really say much about the graphics capability of the printers other than comparing specifications because I rarely have printed much graphics and never really compared the graphics outputs to successive printers. HP 4 series specifications HP 4Si and 5Si specifications HP 4+ and 5 series...

    Need advise on printer

The 4 or the 5 series are great printers. I have a 5M with duplex and have not had any problems with it. Just keeps printing like it was new. With the 5 you can get a duplex unit and I don't think that was an option with the 4's. I also prefer the 4+ over the 4 because there was less paper...

    Windows X·P Service Pack ---> 1 <--- Available

I'm having problems with XP SP1. Specificly I'm getting the Explorer process going to 100%. It does not occur immediately after boot, but rather may occur hours later. After that the machine becomes very sluggish. I'm going to unistall SP1 and see if that helps.

    ESD

I think ESD is a really big deal. My observation is that stuff that I built without paying attention to ESD had much shorter lifespans and a high return rate 6 months+ from building. before instituting the controls, I was getting around a 35% return rate for some HW failure within a year...

Is this Dell worth the money?

Sorry but the P3 is actually less then the Celeron because the additional $100 cost for the P3 is offset with an additional $100 rebate. The less comes from the fact you apply the 10% coupon to a larger (pre-rebate) total.

Is this Dell worth the money?

I'd pick the 1.13 PIII @ $499 with a $200 rebate, 10% coupon, with free shipping for a grand total of $249.10 delivered. I think that is an even better deal.

P5-133XL has suffered a stroke and is not expected to live.

With a gezzer like me, I use paper-tape memory (write once memory). Since paper tape takes so much room in my brain, which has a limited amount of space, I've thrown away lots of memories to keep what's important. The phase "I've forgotten more than you'll ever know" seems to be appropiate...

Interesting Comments on WinXP Keys, KeyGens, and WinUpdate

While MSprobably has a right to disable copies of their OS, they have issues doing stuff like that. The first is of public opinion. Alienating a large bunch of people does MS no good. There undoubtably will be repercussions when purchasing an OS: they remember what MS did to them. Second...

Don't we want to give away a working computer? More to the point if we are to give incentive for someone to belong to the team (beyond just association with our group) don't we want to give something they are going to want like a dual Athlon machine rather than a useless 133 Pentium that won't...

Merc, No thanks but thanks for the offer. The case does not fit modern ATX motherboards otherwise I'd just plop in a new motherboard and the machines original purpose is no longer valid because I need to test HW/SW on more modern machines. All things come to a natural end and I think it is...

Couldn't do it. I'd feel bad about myself because Santa is supposed to give away is stuff not sell it. It just isn't right that a salesman has the right to enter your premisis without even knocking (through the chimminey no less), eat your cookies and milk and then sell you those presents in...

Tannin you are not keeping the specification the same. An example: If you are going to compare then please do apples to apples compare a 1.8 P4 against a 1.8 P4. Yes I know that the Athlon is better and cheaper but the point is if someone came to you with a Dell specification could you beat...

    Tape Backup Solutions

I'd consider backing up to a HD in a removable carrier. It tends to be cheaper as long as the amount of media isn't excessive. It's reatively easy to do the math to determine at which point the tapes start getting less expensive.

I cannot beat Dell in the budget segment.

I came to the same conclusion years ago; It's been that way for both Gateway and Dell for years. The quick answer is No. The performance scores are related to ram, Network card, CPU MHz, and HD space and have little to do with actual performance. At one time I actually solved the multiple equations to actually get the coeficients, but I didn't keep the data. However, I will refer you to...

As long as all drives are running in ultra DMA mode and the CPU is 500MHz+, the performance hit for software raid-1 tends not be signifigent. Cache settings for IE to minimize hitting the hard drive??

Generally, caching to a HD is a good thing because the HD is far faster than re-downloading. So rather than trying to stop the caching process, encourage it. With cable a normal spped is 1.5Mb/s which comes out to around 200KB/s and even a very slow disk with lots of seeking can operate at...
