    Intermittent vibration, drive bearings going?

All drives vibrate, just like all fan's. The fact that you have a loud medium frequency rumble, simply means that your case has a resonance frequency that is a multiple of a high frequency vibration like a fan or a HD in your computer. You can not identify the cause by touch, because it is not...

    Moment of silence

I still have five in continious operation and not one has even once hiccuped. I expect that all will have a long and useful life untill old-age retirement strikes. I even begin to doubt the rumors of many a premature death for the series. I must be a statistical abberation.

    Multiprocessing and Multitasking

There was a W2k reporting bug related to Ultra-66/100. Controllers that used those ATA modes (Before SP1) reported PIO mode but ran in ultra-33 mode. That bug was fixed in SP1 and was never a problem in XP

most unsecure O/S? yup, it's possibly Linux...

Tannin, Yes you are correct, but that has been a very recent decision by MS and the survey that counted the problems is a year-long count. Thus MS's new policy has not effected the survey signifigently. I would argue that swapping of places is caused by two things. The first is a year-long...

Is one of my hard drives on the way out?

There is one qualification for the matched drive requirement that was not mentioned. WD has several drive models that have two different platter densities. For example the WD1200 series can be had with 40GB platters or with 60GB platters. You really should get a drive with the same platter...

Is one of my hard drives on the way out?

No there is a performance issue and a stability issue too.. Yes you lose any surplus space. In addition, the raid-1 array can only run as fast as the slowest drive; When writing to the array both drives must report a success before going on to the next write. There is also a stability issue...

Poll:When will we reach the new 48-bit LBA limit?

I don't disagree that there is a need for more storage. I merely have an issue concerning the limit to what can be used by most people. 144 Petabyte excedes what people can deal with in normal circumstances and that will continue because while technology changes, people don't. Even with...

Poll:When will we reach the new 48-bit LBA limit?

Sorry folks, I just don't see the need for this amount of data in my lifetime: Especially on a single drive. To fill this drive would take 790 years of continous data transfer at T3 speeds (5.79MB/s). With no need, there won't be a market and it will never happen.

Can anybody explain this transfer rate to me?

Don't know what the question was, but you did remind me of the solution - SpinRite. To my knowledge it still optimizes interleaves/LLF's. The problem with partitioning and formatting is that what is needed is to fix the Low level (or intermediate level for those that believe low level involves...

I don't disagree. However, at least my explanations concerning LLF match the symptoms. I didn't see anyone else producing possible causes except the two platters of different densities.

Can anybody explain this transfer rate to me?

Since there are no errors or problems with other drives and controllers, the only explanation(s) that I can think of would be specific to the drive itself. Specificly LLF, firmware or hardware. If you have two platters with different densities then that should show up in drive capacity: It...

USB twice as fast as parallel?
