    I have seen the light...and it's a 21" flat panel

i just picked up an nec 1760nx 17" 16ms lcd. it's much better than, say, a 25ms dell 2000fp, in terms of response but it's still not up to truly competitive first person shooter gaming

as far as benchmark fudging i'd say #1 is apple, #2 is amd, #3 is intel. remember those god-awful k6-2 benchmarks? lol. at any rate, i think it used to break down like this: intel claims you will get some wondrous experience amd claims you will get the same wondrous experience for less...

i've always been frustrated by asus in a specific area where abit excels: signifigant bios upgrades on ancient motherboards case in point: asus p2b and acpi issues :( abit constantly updates bios on very dated boards to ensure they have support for later cpus. the only abit board i've owned...

Visio : No maps for China or Taiwan for "diplomatic rea

Microsoft has said the high rate of software piracy in the country did not allow for strong growth of its own software. Microsoft's China deal comes on the heels of an announcement earlier this month by the Business Software Alliance trade group naming China the number two nation in the world...

you're speaking on behalf of a whole lot of people there, and i've met plenty who hate any corporation just for its size i got in a conversation with one of them at a party shortly after the first matrix movie was released, and i entered the conversation after his anti-commercial preachings...

Which components for a basic, high-reliability system?

feel free to disagree with me on that one. tell me floppy drives and cd audio cables fail more often - i don't care. how will reducing dependency on hard drives/fans fail to change or reduce reliability?

Which components for a basic, high-reliability system?

it doesn't take an astronomer to observe that the sun comes up in the morning. i did warranty work on desktops/workstations/servers for 6 years for hp/compaq/ibm/dell. and a debate isn't needed. there is fact and there is fiction, and any time we spend getting to fact is wasted if the...

you didn't respond on the other one... didn't the vote to secede from canada fail (by a narrow margin) the last time it was placed? that would make quebec still legally part of canada. you'd know way better than i would, i'm curious.

Which components for a basic, high-reliability system?

did you determine this by verifying fan functionality on every dead psu you encountered? dead fans promote such symptoms. and this is yet another irrelevant point. we're talking about general pcs and general failures. the majority of people who experience disk crashes don't experience them...
  25. H

Which components for a basic, high-reliability system?

before this one gets yanked out of context, i didn't mean 'we're talking about pcs' to say that cougtek's points (however irrelevant) were at all invalid. rather, that they don't matter in this thread, as such factors cannot be reasonably determined by consumers for pc components.
  26. H

Which components for a basic, high-reliability system?

sure. it's a fantastic point. too bad we're talking about pcs. dead athlon cpu fan = dead athlon cpu. the system will lock and the load will signifigantly decrease, but they will still self-immolate doing nothing at all. emphasis added on 'if'. so that's an 'if'. wow! very interesting...

Which components for a basic, high-reliability system?

i never said it was a substitute of good design. i 'ignored' other points of failure because they are categorically irrelevant. perhaps next time i'll do the right thing and suggest he buy a psu whose caps won't leak? i never said anything about other points of failure, but it's pretty...

Which components for a basic, high-reliability system?

well i should thank my lucky stars for not needing to view real/wmp9 files :) i use wmp6.4 on xp (kudos ms for leaving that in), and quicktime when i need it. never use it enough to crash. but i do derail threads with internet explorer!

i had wasted a bit of time quoting and whatnot, but it really was wasted time. i'm truly sick of the pedantic responses from all the emotionals around here who can't even seem to keep threads orthogonal. if you want to prove me wrong on the dell thread, do it on the dell thread. you see, i...

Which components for a basic, high-reliability system?

when did i mention parts that don't need fans? there is little doubt in my mind the #1 cause of psu failure is fan failure followed by component overheating yes, all electric devices like cool operating temps. the most common causes of pc failure are crashed drives and blown psus...

yes, it does. fan failure = component failure. this is avoided if the component doesn't need one.

Which components for a basic, high-reliability system?

if reliability is clearly paramount to speed, i would give consideration to a fanless mini-itx board and a fanless (possibly dc) power supply. the less moving parts you have, the better.

another thing heh 'for businesses' meaning business workstations, not servers. dell completely smokes mom&pop in that arena (see yesterday as an example).
  43. H

    Beating Dell

i would like to observe that the 'can't beat dell under any circumstances' talk is specifically addressing singular systems, singular components. for businesses, i think it's closer, but dell wins because of the reliability of the company, competitive pricing (call a rep - they will discount...
