Are there any Issues with Lenovo B560?

An Ideapad has about as much in common with a Thinkpad as a Chevy does with a Cadillac.

On an odd, tangentially related note, I met a USS Indianapolis survivor a couple weeks ago. He said he was 89.

    Autorun.inf on C drive

Essentially because it's an assumption Microsoft makes about how Windows will operate on a computer. I'm kind of pissed about it. I can run Linux without any swap space if I want, but Windows really expects it to be there. Every time I try to turn the pagefile off I wind up having something or...

Move Windows 7 partitions to new drive

You do not even want to KNOW what I had to go through to get a triple-booting sysprep image working on my classroom PCs. I have to lay down an initial image to get the geometry of the partitions right and then re-image each of Vista and Windows 7 so that their installers don't fuck up the...

    Recommendations on USB memory sticks?

My Contour is the fastest thumb drive I have, actually. You're right that I largely don't care since the content on my drives is fairly static, but it does help when I'm pushing out ~19GB of my triple-boot classroom system image. I'm probably going to buy a USB3 64GB unit next time I need one...

Are there any Issues with Lenovo B560?

Your two year old netbook is a modern CPU, Tannin. It has the benefit of seven or eight years of engineering, materials and manufacturing advances over and above a Pentium 4 or Athlon CPU. Windows programs that support the ribbon are actually completely usable, unless you're one of those people...

Are there any Issues with Lenovo B560?

Both. Yes, you can technically make compatible documents with OpenOffice, but normal people don't understand how, and pretty much every Freshman at every college in the USA has to take a class on how to work Word, Excel and PowerPoint where they're graded on whether or not the documents they...

Are there any Issues with Lenovo B560?

Serious answers: On Windows, it's all about keeping up with security software. And it's ridiculous. Modern Antivirus software likely as not will bring a decent Pentium 4 to its knees. Not to mention the number of truly awful Flash applets and web sites that use Javascript in unspeakable and CPU...

I did not know it was Easter. I thought Easter was last week. People keep changing it and I don't care enough to keep track. Autorun.inf on C drive

OK, OK. The way things should look is this: There is a System process, which I had forgotten about. It basically does one thing, which is kick off user sessions. Most stuff that runs at system authorization should be spawned by wininit.exe. I was expecting to find out that you had a dummy...

    Autorun.inf on C drive

Process Explorer should give you the chain of programs that is involved in creating the file. If you search for the file handle you should find a nested set of executables. "System" is essentially a user account, not a process, so there's something else involved.

When would you use a blade configuration?

From what I've read, they're for high CPU density configurations where physical space is at a premium. So they make sense for easily parallel applications like VMs and web servers in small data centers or at colocation facilities.

I did want one. In fact, I needed one. Mine is LTO4 and holds 15 tapes + the cleaning tape, for a total uncompressed capacity of 12TB. The tapes are cheap, they'll last essentially forever (probably eight to ten years based on my expected usage pattern) and they're easy to store. Given the...

    SoHo Gigabit Router?

You're probably talking about a premium-grade wireless-N home router to get a small number of gigabit ports. External enclosures?

I'm really down on single-disk external enclosures for 3.5" drives. Well, every little bit of reading seems to suggest that the low-power i3 is the way to go, hardware-wise. I'm going to have to put together a proof of concept machine or two to test things out with FreeBSD, but probably is the best available option if I want zfs. And I think that I do. I...
