    Macbook Pro first impressions

Having spent the weekend with it, battery life on the MBP is atrocious. The Mac's sleep mode seems to equate to Standby on a PC; it's essentially instant-on, but it appears that there's very little power savings as a result of using sleep. Anyway, I can run the machine for perhaps 2:15 with the...

    Half Price REVO drive

The fact that unit is on sale at that very reasonable price is a good sign that prices on those things are dropping generally. I don't want to buy another $500 SSD.

    TV programs you like?

As an unrepenitent pirate, I have no idea which of the shows I watch are still airing, what channel they're on or their schedule. I just have a list of stuff I want to watch in sequential order. I'm probably going to start Stargate soon. I'm told that I'll particularly like Stargate Universe.

No, you'd just need the one. Just because it doesn't use 3D graphics doesn't mean it isn't insanely complicated.

    Seagate bad RMA service

Given Seagate's current web-based RMA service, I have to phone in my RMAs because my postal code doesn't align with what their address auto-correct thinks it should be. Their phone service is fast and easy, which I guess is a good point. Though it has been my general experience that the better...

    Best movie you've seen

The thing to say abut Sucker Punch is that it exists at the intersection of strippers and cosplay and that is awesome. I saw probably a dozen hot chicks walking around in Sucker Punch inspired outfits at Comic Con this year and I was thankful for every one of them.

It's a Dell. You buy it from Dell. Dell will send it to you in a box that says Dell on it. And then you can head over to Crucial.com to pick out the right RAM. They have a tool to pick out the right kind. The RAM will come in a little box that says Crucial.com on it. You take it out of the...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Is RAID1 even an issue here? In theory RAID1 means doing the same thing to both drives regardless. There's no splitting data or parity calculations, so I'm thinking there isn't a complicating factor.

Xmastime: Crappy music, good deals on stuff

A couple good deals on things I noticed things from today's Newegg email: 1. 4-bay eSATA enclosure for $90. 2. S*ny DLNA client. Looks just like the LG Smart TV guy that I like. $50.

    Llano for HTPC?

Onboard graphics are good enough for HTPCs no matter which way you go, as long as you have a modern platform. If your buddy is going to be ripping discs, he's going to be better off with an Intel chip, and other than that, all the current graphics packages, be they on-chip, onboard or discrete...

Intel NICs support things like teaming for bandwidth aggregation and failover. I can't recall a weirdo compatibility issue with an Intel NIC. I've seen weird issues with non-Intel adapters, like Realtek 8111s that occasionally negotiate half-duplex connections to switched networks.

    Android phones: Tips, tricks?

One of the nice things about the Android Platform is that there are other options available. iPads can cost more than $700 and external storage on those is beyond the wildest Steve Jobs necrophile wet dream of iStuff people.

    Android phones: Tips, tricks?

32GB is as big as microSD gets anyway. Many devices that have slots don't have much internal memory, so if you need tons of data you wind up with 32GB either way. I have three 32GB microSD cards in my laptop bag but who the hell swaps out those cards on anything like a regular basis anyway?

    Nice New Antec Case

A new case that I am very impressed with is the NZXT Source 220. They're $60, made of decent quality steel, have a good number of drive bays, front USB 3 and nice cable management. I've never used an NZXT case before but I have to say I was seriously impressed.

So I wanna rip my SACD collection...

SACDs, for those who don't know, are two, four or six channel high definition recordings with a normal CD layer and a second DVD-like layer that typically contains 96 or 192kbps audio. The HD Audio doesn't play in anything but devices specifically made to handle SACDs. There is no...

    Google Music beta

Google Music's store component launched sometime in the last couple days. Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

Couple things: 1. Getting a Samsung TV warranty sucks. No first-hand experience, but my parents had issues with it. Actually, as I understand it, TV warranties in general pretty much suck; I know people who variously say the same thing about S*ny, Panasonic, Toshiba and LG. I think the best...

    Media Player Appliances

I think the ideal is to find something that does DLNA + Netflix + Amazon + Hulu + a decent interface to Youtube and Vimeo + Pandora + Last.fm/Spotify/whatever other music streaming. And basically nothing does that. All those miss working with one thing or other. The other thing to watch out...

    Something Random

When kitty litter gets wet on tile, it turns into a hard, glue-like substance that has to be scraped off with something designed for scraping. When kitty litter gets wet on carpet, it still dries out, but it flakes off easily and can be vacuumed up. I'll take the carpet.

    Something Random

I'd go with carpet in the bathroom. Not deep pile stuff, but since I keep a litter box in my bathroom for my cats, I'd rather vacuum than have to sweep and scrub the little bits that get tracked out when they do their business. Kitty litter vacuums easily. It's not so easy to get off the floor...

    Opti-UPS?

Quick review: Yup, it's a UPS. It didn't explode when I plugged it in. I opened it up and the battery replacement procedure is simple enough. I get more than five minutes of run time out of it for two machines with 500W PSUs and probably a dozen hard drives between them. Looks good so far.

Windows Home Server / Home Server OS

That was my thought as well. Though not while 3TB drives are selling for $250 apiece. There's a picture of somebody's appliance on the FreeNAS site. It just took me a little while to figure out what the chassis was. Incidentally, if you drag a picture in to Google Image Search, Google will...

LENOVO IdeaPad K1 vs Samsung Galaxy tablets

The only one that actually belongs to me is tha 7" Galaxy, which wins for me on basis of form factor, since it is primarily an E-reader rather than an internet access device. The devices are all functionally very similar otherwise.
