Another weekend, another terrible experience in attempting a migration with current VMware tools. You know it's shit when you're happy about a sub-120 minute boot time.

    Android phones: Tips, tricks?

I've seen people whine about issues that they blame on Android but not anyone whose opinion I'd consider remotely credible and usually in the context of advocacy for some other mobile OS. Which, honestly, is largely pretty stupid. I have a philosophical disagreement with Apple's closed...

    Android phones: Tips, tricks?

I've never had my android phone lock up. I've seen some cheapass Android phones (e.g. the HTC Aria, most early Samsung phones) such that it wouldn't shock me that it might be a problem with some hardware.

    Best movie you've seen

The Incredibles and The Iron Giant are both awesome films. I respect the hell out of Brad Bird. But I'll be damned if I give Tom Cruise any money. The new Sherlock Holmes movie was entertaining though. I saw it this afternoon.

Fangirls need to be thrown the occasional homo-erotic bone. I wouldn't begrudge them that. There is a theory that I subscribe to, that most girls who are interested enough in science fiction and comic books and fantasy novels are at least bicurious if not more-than-curious. They're cool with...

I haven't watched it yet, but I've been reading the comic book since issue #3. I knew someone in college who was active in Doctor Who fandom on a national level. Understand that this was 1994, during the long hiatus of the series. If you took all the worst possible stereotypes about science...

    TV programs you like?

I'm not a big fan of police procedurals, but I like Nathan Fillion enough to sit through season 1 of Castle. It's unchallenging, by the numbers network TV fare that lets Nathan Fillion be Nathan Fillion and that's the appeal as far as I can tell. At some point I probably will watch the whole...

I should have my Intel 310 miniPCIe SSD by the end of the week. The miniPCIe guys seem to be a bit of a dead end. Not many notebooks use them and the largest capacity I can find is 120GB. I bought an 80GB model. Hopefully it will be good enough for my purposes.

I managed to get through an episode and a half of Parks and Recreation. Which, granted, is about an entire episode more than I made it through either version of The Office. I quite enjoyed 30 Rock, which apparently hasn't started its new season yet. Shameless has a very entertaining first...

FreeNAS RAIDZ performance is definitely bound up by RAM. With a total of 20GB RAM, I'm seeing 130MB/sec writes over NFS with dual gigabit. This might be of some interest to folks who get here from Google, given my previous post on the matter.

Hitachi starts shipping 4TB drives in Japan

ddrueding did. But a 4TB drive in an external enclosure with undoubtedly shitty power regulation just seems like a great way to lose 4TB of data.

Hitachi starts shipping 4TB drives in Japan

Sure, but if your experience with tapes involves DC2120s or Travan, it's a completely different deal. Besides, we're talking about backups. Access times aren't normally relevant for that application.

LTO can fill a tape in a little over 10 minutes if the drive can be fed fast enough. I'd say that compares quite well to USB. Best I've seen from USB3 is around 80MB/sec.

    Supermicro deal on Ebay

When drives get reasonable again, I'll buy an Intel RES2SV240 ($200) and stick it in a secondary chassis. That Expander is specifically compatible with the LSI9240/IBM M1505, supports 24 drives @ 6Gbps SAS and can be installed in a 2U enclosure. Though from what I've read, forecasts say that...

It's not as much as it sounds. My file servers were over capacity for months, so the excess was spread out to arrays on some of my desktops. The new arrays just gave me a place to centralize all my storage again and now that everything is copied back, I can see that 15TB arrays aren't really...

If you poke around on the site, they say one of their top priorities is to bring parity to the Chrome version of ABP. Though at the same time, ABP was an offshoot of the original Adblock. Hopefully someone else will fork a proper adblocker if these settings are not easily changed.
