SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

DAVID? I notice a BIG difference in access time, due to the added processor and cache, both the 128 mb on the raid card, and, perhaps, the doubling of the cache on the drives. I don't notice any increase over two drives in access time, in fact, it seems a bit slower the times I've done it...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Similar, but without the SSDs. I can't designate a removeable drive through the 3 Ware Raid card, so I need the slow card in as well.

SSDs - State of the Product?

From ram disk testing, my system is maxed at 1200 mb/sec. David's at 3500 mb/sec, IIRC. The 3 Ware Raid card has done 800 mb/sec, in the 133 PCI-X slot, with 8 7200 SATA drives in one of the tests. I think at these speeds, and access times, to really notice a difference, you need to at least...

Hi Wondering if a 16 gig or 32 gig, or more would be a nice SSD addition for a page file drive, and, browser cache drive?

SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

Reminds me of the mac guy I sold all my SCSI mac stuff to, and, all my mac hardware. He got it for pennies on the dollar, and was delighted. I'm sure it was far faster then anything he had ever had, so Sechs' rejects might be someone else's jewels.

SSDs - State of the Product?

IIRC, 4k is the default NTFS block size, so yes, it's important. As long as Intel has pretty much a monopoly on drives, we can look back in history to see what kind of pricing they do. That said, what concerns me was the 94-95 ram price crashing. I remember buying 32 mb of memory for a 540C...

SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

David, your preaching to the choir. I've always maintained access time was very important, and, that's why I've always used 15k drives when possible, or practical. I have no doubt that the SSD's are faster, and make a large difference, it's just not practical right now for what I want, to set...

Sechs: I DO listen. You are one of the few people who has made the transition from SCSI/SAS to SSD and posted about it. IIRC, you said: "I finally got the Vertex that I ordered and installed Windows on it. It's a lot less impressive than I'd been lead to believe. It's definitely faster than...

SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

Yes, I have done that. I just cleared a drive to use for torrents. Your right about PCI-X, and there are about two cards for it, 3ware 8 and 16 ports, ranging used about 100 bucks to 400 new. That would certainly make one consider a new motherboard, or a single drive with a SATA 3 card. Odd...

Sorry you took my remarks personally. Not intended that way. I took your advice on the Seagate, and, for the same reasons, it's at 97% formatted right now. I'm using it in a Granite Digital removeable drive setup. The price to gigabyte ratio was too good. As for the packaging: It came inside...

SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

Another good point would be that you can connect a SSD to a SATA controller as well as to a SAS controller. David, you've already made the point that the current SATA controllers take advantage of the cpu/memory on the motherboard. Not sure how that works, but, that would be an advantage to SATA.

Thank you Timwhit, Stereodude, Fushigi for replies on the subject. Well, I was tempted by the Samsungs, but, went with a Seagate 1.5 TB for about 120, with shipping. Hopefully it will work, and, if not, I've had good luck with Seagate returns. I guess some of the stuff I use is old, and, doesn't give you a drive install option. I have no intention of...
