SSDs - State of the Product?

If you get a good SSD (Intel, OCZ Vertex, re-brands of either), then nothing is required. I haven't done any trickery with my machine. Those tricks are mainly for making sucky SSDs suck less. I've done quite a few drive images onto SSDs without issue.

How do I turn this system into a HTPC?

I have had the same out-of-sync sound issues, but it was recording-specific. Some played fine, others didn't. Some were DVDs that were out of sync, others were fine as DVDs but got messed up when I re-encoded using XviD.

Some general questions, if you don't mind. 1. Is it unreasonable to plan everything as part of a single compatible system? 2. With an eye towards cost/value, who should I be looking at? 3. What are the components I should be looking for as a base set?

Anything that contains mercury will have the tax. That is every LCD or plasma display. I don't install software for my monitors, or change the settings, so I don't know.

All these things cost money, I hesitate putting money into something until I have at least some idea of what I should get. Photoshop/PTGui/Photomatix were easy decisions, as I know a bit about software. Support systems, I have no idea. I started with a $20 tripod from Fry's, and now have a...

CHEAP ANTENNA FOR WIRELESS CARD THAT WORKS?

Start with a pair of these on your router. If you still need more for the HTPC, then get one of these. The antenna for the WMP54G is a guess, because Linksys doesn't say what connector they use.

Almost nobody cares about BSD anymore.

I'm not saying that it guarantees security, but you can't say it doesn't help. Unless someone wants what you have very, very badly, they aren't going to write a custom exploit for you and your friends. http://xkcd.com/538/

CHEAP ANTENNA FOR WIRELESS CARD THAT WORKS?

All the antennas that I have gotten helped somewhat. Is this for a desktop (fixed position, directional antenna) or a laptop (varying position, omni-directional antenna)? Almost nobody cares about BSD anymore.

Another thing in its favor security-wise is it's obscurity. There is no point developing an exploit for *BSD, as the market is even smaller than Linux.

I've found that there aren't that many cases for expensive machines that last a long time. I don't like it that way (more work, more pollution), but instances...
