    MiFi 2200 mini-review.

Pandora seems to be about 3MB for each song, all transferred as soon as the song starts. So if you don't like the song and choose to skip it, you've already downloaded the whole thing.

    MiFi 2200 mini-review.

Sorry. It is a box about the size of a dozen credit cards stacked on top of each other. It connects to a cellular network and broadcasts as a WiFi hotspot. That way any devices you (or your friends) have in the area can get on-line. It can be password protected, which is a good idea because you...

    MiFi 2200 mini-review.

These are one of the new hot toys, so a figure I'll do a bit of a write-up. I'm in the field testing MiFi 2200s from Sprint and Verizon. Both units appear identical, but the Sprint unit is much easier to get started with; no software to install and no password on the wifi, it takes you to a...

    Monitoring internet connections...

Nah. I hate apps that say "look what we can do for you! Just spend tons of money, several hours setting it up, and another week learning how to use it!". I'm sure it is good at what it does, but I don't think I want all that.

    Monitoring internet connections...

Right now I'm having some connection issues on some of my T1s. On one of my other screens I have 6 DOS windows open with "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -t" running to various internet links, monitoring dropped packets and fluctuating latency. Is there a program out there that could do a better job for...

Daemon tools offers 2 versions, one paid, one free. During the installation of the free version, you need to deselect the options for their toolbar, changing your homepage, and changing your search engine. If there were actual malware, this would be the first I've heard of it. Nothing is...

    Netbook for the wife

I'm perfectly happy with the performance of Atom. I wouldn't mind some more speed, but not with a loss of battery life. With the right other components, it is a fast boot and fast app loading little monster.

    DVD Ripping and playback

For regular DVDs I rip using Ripit4me and encode to XviD using AutoGK. I'm still searching for an easy method of getting BluRay movies into h264. In hindsight, grabbing them directly as ISOs is a pretty good idea. No need to worry about compression issues, and it makes special features and...

Just lost the motherboard on my wife's desktop/our file server. An XFX i780 from several years ago. Hangs on post code 25 even after BIOS reset, RAM change, GPU change, etc. Ordering up a Intel BOXDP45SG and CORSAIR CMPSU-620HX (just in case) to replace it. This machine is our primary file...

The washer does shake a bit as it gets up to speed, but only because the floor isn't sturdy enough to stop it. I am very pleased so far, just be sure to use the "HE" detergents that don't sud up so much, it makes a pretty big difference in a front-loads ability to rinse effectively.

An interesting note, the washer includes "vibration reduction technology". I wanted to test it out so I put in some unbalanced stuff and had a go.
