    stopping the spammers

Agreed. 5 would probably be enough, we get the occasional "Hi" post before the spam, but 5 should be good. Just 1 or 2 people with mod privileges would be enough, just give them the ability to delete new-ish accounts and all their posts.

    24GB+ of RAM?

I was just giggling at the SSD RAID capabilities of this.

    24GB+ of RAM?

Kingston is the plan, they are just cheap and seem to always work. Crucial is good as well, but seems to be more expensive. It made sense when they were the best, but they share that rep now.

    24GB+ of RAM?

That isn't bad, actually. Just spec up the CPUs a bit, add the second PSU and the support for all the drive bays that are all already there (can't believe this isn't standard), and that is only at $3k. Not bad at all.

    24GB+ of RAM?

Dammit, I had a great response that got eaten, so you'll get the short version. 1. If you don't have the expensive licenses (vMotion), having one big pool is the most efficient use of your resources, and makes it much easier to manage. 2. If you do have the expensive licenses, you are paying...

    24GB+ of RAM?

The amount of memory I can fit in a VMWare ESXi server is the bottleneck to how many VMs it will run. What is the cheapest way to get a machine with 24GB+ of RAM? I can find non-ECC/Buffered 4GB DIMMs for $150. I usually don't bother with that stuff, but 24GB is quite a bit of RAM. The ECC...

My HTPC died! New Build Time!

I know enough. I don't have a lesson plan, or a structured way to go through all the features, but when she looks at a picture and says "I want it to be more/less this/that", I can show her how to do it. And since she isn't working from a skill set of any kind; she thinks not in terms of what...

    Windows 7 nonsense

Seconded. Even if you were able to do it without any major stability or compatibility issues, I'm sure the result would be appreciably slower than a clean install.

There are very few cars with such a small displacement around here. The average in the parking lot outside my office right now is about 3-3.5 liters.

How reliable is the ipconfig /all information?

This is very possible. The best way I know of to check is to disable your DHCP server and attempt to renew. It is not fun trying to physically locate the device.
  16. ddrueding

How reliable is the ipconfig /all information?

I don't know how it could be wrong. There would have to be some sort of corruption or crazy config of the DHCP server itself. Does the DHCP server have multiple IP addresses?

I would also like to congratulate ASUS for disabling Hyperthreading by default and burying it 3 levels deep in the BIOS.

    Windows 7 nonsense

The CPU certainly is your performance strong-point. I'd consider more RAM and a new video card. Or just get an i7, an SSD, and not worry about anything at all ;)

My HTPC died! New Build Time!

Still installing the OS, so I'll have more comments later. For now, I can tell you that the northbridge cooling on the ASUS board is not adequate for low-airflow machines. It is even less adequate if you leave the "ASUS" brand shiny metal plate that covers most of the fins on the northbridge. If...

My HTPC died! New Build Time!

Shutting it off is not a concern for me. I want it to work. One of the good things about digital audio is that I no longer need to worry about the quality of the hardware, either it works or it doesn't.

Phone thread: What phones are you using, and with what plans?

Merc nailed it. If you don't talk much, the prepaid plans can be very cheap. My wife used them until we got together, cost her about $10/month (plus calling cards to Russia).

My HTPC died! New Build Time!

The question I would be asking, since I am in exactly the same situation (mine died yesterday), is: Is there an onboard video solution out there that can handle 1080p and good surround audio via HDMI? Socket 775 would be great, but the ability to have no cards whatsoever really appeals. I'm...

    8 x 1.5TB + Perc 6i + RAID-6 = Faster Storage

All those ports are already used with production drives, unfortunately. I could throw the 16-port 3Ware in there and see what it can do, but I can only do hardware work on that machine during the service window (it is our primary file server) and I'm booked for the next couple days.

    8 x 1.5TB + Perc 6i + RAID-6 = Faster Storage

That softRAID was with the drives in passthough mode, so the CPU of the fileserver should have handled it (a Q9550 with 8GB of RAM, shouldn't be a problem).
