    Cold

I mean black faced cuckoo-shrike. The usual copyright violation follows, though it doesn't do justice to this magnificent bird, particularly not to it's extraordinarily beautiful plumage - a delicate shade of grey that lifts "grey" right out of its usual humble position somewhere unnoticed...

    Cold

Enjoy. Humph. I spent the morning getting hot and sweaty buggerising round with pruning saw and loppers, the afternoon listening to the roar of the mulch-maker and feeding the morning's prunings into it, turning big lumps of tree into small lumps of tree. From time to time it occurred to me that...

    Boring reliability cross-post

No, they all do that. It's because they send us a replacement that is not of equal value to the new drive that we gave the end-user.
  4. Tannin

    Boring reliability cross-post

By the way, Buck, we always replace a failed drive with one out of our own stock: making a customer wait weeks for a system that works is unacceptable. If we have one, we use a refurb, but if we don't we use a brand new drive. Another reason why I'm not buying Western Digital anymore.

    Boring reliability cross-post

I'm planning to keep on recording my RMA drives here in this thread in the hope that, over time, it will prove instructive. Not so many this time, just two drives, both Western Digitals: a 300BB on its second trip back (i.e., already a warranty replacement) and an 800BB. Or was the 80GB the one...

Which phpBB2 theme do you like best?

OK Clippy, you got me: I can't figure out what the "interesting amount of detail" on the main page is with BlackSoul.

    Give us back subsilver

Sure does, Clippy. I'm using digitaltwilight right now, on the theory that Tea and I won't get ourselves mixed up so often if we use different colour schemes, and although I have to admit that Tea has snaffled herself the best one of all with LOTR, this is very, very nice.

Which phpBB2 theme do you like best?

This is neat! Thanks Doug! I voted for Lord of the Rings but I'm using BlackSoul right now, just to try it out. It's rather nice too, but it has some ugly white spaces in it (at the bottom of pages and similar places) that look out of place. Good, but not quite right. Also, if it's "black...

    Cold

Just in case I didn't mention it elsewhere, today is the first day of my holidays. I'm off to play with rakes and concrete mixers and chainsaws and stuff. I may or may not be around here for the next two weeks. Just be sure you all behave yourselves while I'm away!

Best phpBB styles: my top ten

A darker sub-silver has merit, Cliptin. The subsilver scheme looks good, it just doesn't deliver enough contrast to stop me coing cross-eyed. But doesn't phpBB allow for a user-selected scheme? Is that difficult to implement? Then we could have three or four of the most popular ones and those...

I always disliked subsilver. I just stayed quiet in the interest of keeping the peace. Light blue on whitishgreyishsomething is a recipe for eyestrain.

Best phpBB styles: my top ten

Best: Vereor Lord of the Rings Simply excellent. Index pages are not bad but the actual forums are the best by a mile: good looking and easy to read. Black Soul Another very good one. Darkside Laid-back, restrained, surprisingly clear given the colours. SubBlack SubGreen Prissy but...

    Unlocked multiplier BIOS

Thanks TheSwede, there certainly is some interesting stuff there! LiamC, excuse me, I didn't see your post till just now. Tea is asleep on the job, same as usual. I'll make some enquiries anout the nForce II Epox boards as soon as I get back from my holidays. (Yes, I'm having a couple of weeks...

    Who da best now?

Damn it, I can't resist any longer. I vote for Blakewry first, but by a very small margin from Tea and Slo, with honourable mentions going to James and Jo Jo, and ... well, they are all pretty good!
  17. Tannin

    Give us back subsilver

I look at it this way: a) I don't like the look and feel of the actual forum itself as much . b) But I like the good-looking new header bar. c) And most of all, although I don't like the aesthetics so much, I find the new colors much easier to read. There wasn't enough contrast in the old...

    PC sound system

Not being much interested in sound these days (after half a lifetime as a sound fanatic, believe it or not) I haven't been following this thread, but I just noticed all the crap being thrown at Creative speakers. Now for mine, this doesn't wash. The entry-level Creatives are outstanding value...

BMW Z4, like it or not?

I'm sure I've said this before, and I daresay they have improved a bit over the years, but the one-and-a-half German cars I have owned were both a weird mixture of the excellent and the ridiculous. I'm not in a great hurry to have another one of them. Take my VW Golf. In those days, it was...

    Avatar image size limit

I would be reluctant to lend support to any increase in the size limit. Make the limit bigger, and the avatars will get bigger, you can be quite certain of that. Several times I've hit the file size limit when making an avatar and had to re-examine my file format (PNGs can be terrible sometimes)...

I'm surprised that no-one has commented on this yet. Seems like an overclocker's dream, and makes you wonder what AMD think of it.

Can anybody explain this transfer rate to me?

In the old days, LiamC, all this stuff was under user control. You would buy a hard drive and a hard drive controller card. Then you would format the drive using the BIOS on the card. Mostly you would have to get at the BIOS format routine by using DEBUG. Different brands of controller card had...

Poll:When will we reach the new 48-bit LBA limit?

I'm much better at predicting the past than the future, alas. (Ask my bookmaker!) I'm a bit inclined to go out on a limb here and say that, by the time we get within sight of the limit, architectural changes will have made it a non-issue. Currently, for all the incredible technology we see in...

I didn't do the whole seven acres, Mark. I just feel as though I did. :( Yesterday I did about 2 acres, plus some cleaning up of bush litter (because it's the start of the fire season, and while fallen leaves and bark are good for the trees, they are a fire hazard and this year is going to be a...

    Cold

Well, I gave the new Honda a real thrashing today. Seven acres doesn't sound so much, but it was hot and I'm .. er ... I believe the polite term is "buggered". It's a good little mower, but I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't have bought a ride-on instead.

To JBOD or not to JBOD, that is the question.

Tell you what: I volunteer me and my boys to play for Australia. Um ... let me see, I'm 43 and the youngest player on the team. Most of the guys are in their late fifties, a couple of them well over 60. We ... um ... well, we finish second quite a lot in our third-grade Masters competition...

    Windows XP Home OEM license.

It astonishes me that people so often get confused between two entirely different concepts: Legal is what the law says. Law is made by the properly elected representatives of the people within the confines of the constitution. Endorsed by an EULA is what a particular individual citizen or...

    Acoustic management

Funny thing that. I first met Bill when he rang up and wanted to buy some really serious computing power: an Athlon 550. So we did a deal and I nearly fell out of my chair when he gave me the delivery address: 131 Athlon Drive!

    Which Socket A?

Colour coded LED pins? Bahh. Brainless technological overkill. .. .. .. .... ..... That is all you need: sensible bloody layout in the first place. Five pins has to be the power LED. Tick. Four pins has to be speaker. Tick. That only leaves three: hmmm ... power switch is most important, the...

    75/60 GXP PRoblems Exposed ???

Nope. Hitachi. Fujitsu just got out of the desktop storage business. I don't think they'd take the Deathstar Division if you gave it to them. Hell, they had a desktop manufacturing divison of their own up until six months or so ago - and they threw it away.

I'll do the organ grinding around here, thank you very much. (Ahh, Tannin, do you know what you just zaid?) (I know. You don't. That's because you are small, ignorant, and unsullied by Western civilisation. Go to bed.) (I waz only trying to help.) (Yes, I know, Tea. Trust me, you don't need...

    Hard drive are high tech

Good post, Blake. Thankyou. Time we brought ourselves up to date from the hoary old comparisons that we used to read in ST-225 days. Time, one wonders if a virus might be a more appropriate cause. :) With that in mind: Head gap: 40nm Large virus: 250nm Small virus: 20nm Maximum resolution of...

    75/60 GXP PRoblems Exposed ???

    Which Socket A?

I'm inclined to perhaps be a little harder on Gigabyte docs than I might otherwise be because of their truly horrible ones back in 486 and Pentium days. Besides, I hate the fold-out things because they don't fit nicely on my motherboard manuals shelf. But these days they are probably about as...

    Which Socket A?

It looks good, Mercutio, and you can see that they are trying hard to get them right, but all too many Gigabyte docs are riddled with errors, even today.I don't worry about it too much. Better a good board with a bad manual than a bad board with a good manual!

    Which Socket A?

That questionable Epox model: 8KHAL. As Coug says, Gigabte are doing almost everything right these days. Except their manuals, of course - Gigabyte still can't do manuals. But I haven't tried their latest and greatest: too expensive. I'll come to them if I can't find better value elsewhere. But...

    Which Socket A?

I'm using the Epox at present, Time. Or at least I've used a couple of them, and the backplane aside, found them to be fine so far. Tweaking disk speed

Unlike most of her silliness tonight, Tea's suggestion is good. (Well, her support for your own suggestion, I should say.) I remain agnostic as to the question of whether or not the benchmarked performance gain is real, or indeed as to the question of whether Winbench is a particularly useful...
