ADHD might have something to do with it, but it could just be the opportunity cost of spending that time doing that. And I'll correct myself. I have watched a few films since then, but all were with my daughter to see her reaction and discuss the films. We've done the original 3 Star Wars, the...

    Video Cards

The main advantage of the 4090 for me is turning the power limit way down gives the most efficient performance available. Considering I only have one screen and it is limited to 4k@120, I can set the power limit to 50% and get all the frames I need. Yes, this is absurd.

I'm more of a fan of Marvel than DC, but the last movie I watched (at home or theater) was the first Ironman when it came out. I have a hard time committing 2h+ to a single thing.

That piece was written by Anthony Young, who is very knowledgeable about the things. They've even started to let him make content on even more geeky things lately. Like PiKVM (which is amazing)

    Wireless Outlets and Devices

I run a bunch of devices made by Shelly (including outlet control and smart bulbs), and they work well with my Home Assistant virtual machine with the SkyConnect USB for all the Zigbee/Matter stuff. Funny enough the least reliable for remote control is the expensive Nanoleaf stuff. If you want...

    RAD of the RAID

I've run 4x RAID0 as my OS drive on a number of occasions. So long as any data is quickly getting duplicated someplace else I considered it a viable option. These days I just run a single M.2 as the performance is more than enough.

I used to have a bunch of calls and drives like that, but now that I live on the other side of the planet it is less possible. Fortunately everyone knows how to do a Zoom call from their phone, so I just have them switch to the other camera and take me on a remote tour.

Yup, all Expo does is set the ram to specific timings. In theory you could set all those timings yourself and have the same result. Also in theory those settings were verified on that stick as "optimal", but I don't buy that.

I really do like the Sony mirrorless stuff. The autofocus for video is great, and the low-light is excellent. Considering the next gen of A7 whenever that comes out.

SSDs - State of the Product?

While scrolling through the news, waiting for the diagnostics on my workstation to complete, I discover an article talking about Samsung 980 Pro (particularly the 2TB variant) failing early. I was running diagnostics because my computer will no longer boot. It'll POST just fine, but once it...

For my purposes I consider Proxmox a direct replacement for ESXi with fewer paywalled features. I was able to get a multi-site cluster going within an hour, and migrate VMs across easily. There were some moments of frustration, mainly because I knew all I needed to know about ESXi and having to...

Nope, my mistake for not reading your question well enough. That card does need 16x and gives 4x 4x. Please disregard. It will work in non-ASUS boards though; I ran one in a supermicro for a while.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Merc probably knows things I don't, but the concern as I understand it is about the arrays ability to rebuild in a reasonable amount of time after a failure, and the likelihood of another failure before that rebuild has completed. This is why I've been using fast drives if I need a larger...

The radiator might have fans, or it could just be huge and passive (I have the whole size of the door for it). Heat management: Water Cooling in an Apartment?

The reason for water cooling is specifically to move the heat outside the room. I'm sorry I wasn't clear in the initial post. The PC is next to my desk, and the water blocks capture the heat from the main components. That loop then leaves the pc case, travels along the wall, onto the door next...

Heat management: Water Cooling in an Apartment?

The 4090 and i9-13900KF have both been well documented to get most of their performance with less than half of the power consumption. I might just have to turn it down. That said, getting the heat out of this small room and into the larger hall/living space would at least slow down the process.

Heat management: Water Cooling in an Apartment?

For the first time in nearly a decade I have a home office. It isn't big, but is a big step up from my corner of the bedroom in California. It is also incredibly well insulated. So much so that even in the middle of winter my PC drives the room temp beyond 30C quite quickly when gaming. I...

I agree, and that is why I have a wall of lenses for my 7DII, but the amount of content I see that is now just cell phones leads me to believe most people aren't bothering to learn photography or color science at all. Honestly the poor audio gets me more than the botched exposure.

Learning to be comfortable alone totally sucks. Especially if (like me) you're the type to review your choices and let any sub-optimal play fester. Mirrorless Cameras (MILC) and Lenses

I think the market for low-end (<$3k) cameras is disappearing quickly. As smartphones get better, there is less reason to get a cheap mirrorless or DSLR. And as the low end market shrinks, there is less reason for companies to R&D in that space, which means the cell phone manufacturers' massive...
