    Something Random

If you have web based email, you get to keep it. If your email ID is provided by your ISP, then you get to keep it if your ISP operates in your new location, else not. Even if you won't have a home phone, you can still be reached on your cell phone, so what's the worry? EDIT: Sorry, didn't see...

When I had to re-install Windows 8 (from the recovery partition on the HDD) and then upgrade to 8.1, and then get all the updates for 8.1, this is what I did; selected updates that totaled about 100 MB at a time, let it update, rebooted, then selected the next batch. Tremendously tedious, boring...

    Slow site performance?

I think apart from your hosting provider, there are network issues. Many foreign sites were slow to dead for me yesterday - like ARS Techinca, for example. There's something screwy going on. Maybe a major DOS attack somewhere, or a network outage.

    Slow site performance?

Site is reasonably fast now. This afternoon and morning (about 4 and 8 hours ago), it was unusable - didn't load at all. Last few days it's been dog slow. Just FYI.

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

Thanks jtr. LED bulbs (at least here) are 2x - 3.5x the cost of CFLs, and the only reasons to get them is the lower power consumption and longer life. But if they fail partially or completely much sooner then expected, they're not worthwhile.

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

If it's under voltage, why do some flicker and not others? Because these flickering ones are more sensitive? Over here, Osram has a phenomenal reputation in CFLs and all mine are Osram and nary a problem. But for LEDs, they are rated very poorly, for early death, dimming, and flickering. None...

This is the thread for the discussion of interesting apps.

Last time I checked (a few months ago), their Office apps for Android and a scanner app all wanted every permission under the sun to run. So I backed off and didn't install them. I forego about 5x apps than I install for this reason.

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

Yeah, you guys are right, I also thought the same. My first powerful LED (12W) in my daughter's room is naked, on a side-wall, pointing down at a 45° angle. The one I put in yesterday is naked too, hanging down from the ceiling in the living room. The proposed one for the torchiere will point...

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

I replaced a working exactly 2-year old 23W 2700K 1550 lumens CFL with a 13W 3000K 1300 lumens LED, and it is quite a bit brighter (I know that the CFL has probably dimmed down a bit, but still) . This lamp is on about 5 hours each evening so I thought it worth replacing with something that...

Thanks, but sorry, I still don't get it. You're talking about the end-point usage of power - the motor etc. I was wondering more about the point of entry. If the motor and flourescent lamp work on DC, and are designed to be plugged into an AC circuit, then: 1) There might be an optional AC step...

    Why are chargers so lame?

Ok, here's the Cliff's Notes version: I initially thought it was the chargers, but many here and elsewhere blamed the charging cable. So I bought cables known to be fast at charging. It is now proven that the chargers are good but the USB charging cables they come with are totally lousy. Using...

    Linux nub

I sorta have to agree with you DD. During my extremely limited exposure to Linux, I saw messages to do various shell things which I have no idea about. I last worked on Unix between 1995 and 2000, and that too, on a "need-to-know" basis, meaning I learned just enough to get things done, and...

    Why are chargers so lame?

Well, I'll be damned. On the advice of some folks on another forum, I bought these cables. I used one of these new cables with my charger and put the Charger Doctor in-between. My phone battery was about 85% full. My charger, that was supposed to be lame, began charging at 0.9A! Why, oh why are...

Reviving a decade+ old thread. For support reasons, I'd prefer a mainstream version even if there's a bit of a learning curve. Would that be Ubuntu and not Xubuntu or Kubunu? Also, when they say AMD64, I guess that will work on Intel 64-bit as well? Thanks!

Thanks guys. So maybe W10 isn't all that bad; maybe ok if run with all the protection like Anti-beacon. I also love Handy's idea of using Linux for mainstream use and W7 in a VM for Window's specific things. I do have a i5-3570k, 16 GB RAM and enough disk space, so this should be quite...

My system is already 3 years old. I expect it to live for another 3 (CPU & MB). My fear is that it may fail in that interim period. It usually makes sense to buy the latest hw so that it can have a long life. By the time support for 7 & 8.1 ends, of course, all bets are off. I would have...
