Thanks Merc. I'm leaning towards a clean install of W10. The laptop came with W8, and was upgraded to 8.1 via MS. So I guess the product key is for 8. If I use a tool to find the W8 product key (OEM I guess), and try a clean W10 install on the new SSD using that key, is it likely to activate?

I still have one or two unused Technet keys for Win 7. I guess once the free W10 upgrade ends, these will be useful only for VMs. Yes?

Veracrypt uses the TC code and so is supposed to be compatible. I suggest you folow DD's link, download TC from there, and use TC. If you're familiar with TC, why bother with anything else for now.

I'm still using Truecrypt. It works on W10 as well. I've heard that VeraCrypt, based on the Truecrypt code base, is also good. I'm staying with Truecrypt for now since I have some volumes encrypted with it, I'm not doing anything fancy with it (like boot drive encryption), and it meets my needs...
