    Netbooks (AMD Brazos)

Hi Everyone, Hope you holiday season preparations are coming along. My wife surprised me yeasterday by mentioning that she wants me to get a new laptop/netbook for Uni, and give my current Asus 1001HA netbook to our daughter... (Short story, my son is about to start school, and has a netbook...

Hi Coug, I've sent you an email/PM. Yes cvs should work from any Linux, FreeBSD or Solaris installation, and I would also note that gMTP is also available in the Ubuntu repositories so you should be able to install it easily enough in Lubuntu.

    Adblock Plus to begin sucking

Just had ABP update to v2 on my netbook, took all of 2secs to disable the 'allow ads' function... I just question how their reputation will survive this, as most users will install it, and think that all ads are blocked, only to have a few get through. IMHO, their immediate thought will be...

Synchronizing to an NTP server over LAN

Yes there is a better way, use the w32time service that is builtin into windows. (This is the service that keeps time in sync when computers are part of a domain). IIRC, you simply just need to run: w32tm /setsntp:<ntp server> and start the w32time service. You client will then sync as...

    Supermicro deal on Ebay

I've been thinking about setting up a home DLNA server with all my media on it, and after quickly tallying the storage requirements of needing everything to be kept in MPEG2, basically put it aside for now. It's safe to remove the $NTUninstall folders, providing you don't need to rollback a hotfix. ServicePackFiles are a copy of the last ServicePack installed. It's used if you want to add/remove internal windows components, so not recommended to remove it. $hf_mfg$ are used to ensure hotfix file...

Such a sad day if this gets through. I wonder how the EU will acknowledge such patents? I would have to agree with Sechs, and give Nexenta a second look, if you don't want to run Solaris 11. I certainly agree that Oracle has neutered further development of the several OpenSolaris based OSes with it's new policy on source code releases (which are still coming out, but later than...

    Bear Track Cases add

It does seem a little suspect. While I'm sure they're quality cases, there's no mention of any government endorsed or military specification which they meet (or any other specification for that matter). For protecting stuff in the past I've always used Pelican Cases, like the Pelican 1500.

New motherboard supports 288GB of RAM

I certainly hope there is some form of humour in there? Seriously, if you need that level of RAM and reliablity and if you wanted to build it yourself, I would look at Supermicro or Tyan, both of which have been in the server/workstation market for a long time. (They specialise in...

New motherboard supports 288GB of RAM

New motherboard supports 288GB of RAM

I raise you. Supermicro X8OBN-F. 8x CPUs (or 80 cores if using 10core Xeon E7-8800's), up to 1TB of RAM, and a price that only the real rich can afford. I know, I know, it's not in the same class as the Gigabyte board you listed, but still it's scary at what can be placed into a single...

New motherboard supports 288GB of RAM

Well... 1. You purchase that motherboard. 2. You purchase 2x Intel Xeons to fit. 3. You purchase 18x DIMMs for the correct type. (That are listed in Gigabytes certified memory list). 4. Buy a EATX compatible case, and a high wattage PSU (something desgined for servers, and not some gaming PSU)...

    Nice New Antec Case

Instead of using a PCIe lane for the LAN controller, there is a dedicated link in the P67 chipset exclusively for use with an Intel NIC. Which is theory reduces any latency between a NIC and the rest of the system. (It also has the side effect of reducing the cost of the whole setup).

    Nice New Antec Case

OT. Gigabyte Motherboard It might, but I don't think that board is ideal for a number of reasons: 1. Only 4 DIMMs in EATX. Heck even Intel squeeze 8 DIMM slots in ATX on the Intel DX79TO. 2. I get a terrible rash when I have to deal with Creative based audio solutions. 3. Why not install an...
