question ZFS and WD green drives?

Don't know about the 7K2000's specifically, but I'm running 7K3000's with ZFS with zero issues (Solaris 11.1 currently as the host OS).

    Something Random

Secure Erase is part of the SATA specification, but alas only a few drives support it correctly. (It's available on both HDDs and SSDs, but it's up to vendors to actually implement and support it correctly).

    Something Random

IIRC from my military days, a physically fit and well feed person can survive at high performance levels on only 4 hours per night for a maximum of 5 days. After which, there is a rapid loss of performance (primarily mental), at which after 10-14 days of only 4hrs sleep, the person is basically...

The Q6600 gives a LOT more L2 cache which will help a lot over the e3300. (8MB vs 1MB)...

    Mains Voltage Control

IIRC, you're in India? - the spec is "Residential power supplied in India is two wire 220 volts, permitted variation 6%, and maximum load 40 amperes." 220V + 6% = 233.2V 240V + 6% = 254.4V - I would consider 250V to be high even if the local area rating is 240V, especially if you're noticing...

    VMWare Converter

Since you're on Windows, there's a little bit of work involved. 1. You need to create a copy of the HDD as a raw image using 'dd' - http://aeroquartet.com/movierepair/dd%20for%20windows 2. Convert this raw image into something that VMWare can use -...

    Remapping parallel port addresses

IIRC, (from reading the PCI spec many-many moons ago), any PCI or PCIe card won't touch the legacy ISA port address spaces for compatibility reasons. USB adapters don't work (I've used just about every model out there, and they don't really work). AFAIC, that $70 card will be about it. At my...

Setting up a VPN channel inside a FreeBSD jail

Not really more reliable (as that would be dependent on the underlying hardware), more about security, load balancing (between all OS instances) and separation of concerns. Boxes open to the wide world tend to get beaten up a bit (either attacks, ddos, etc), and you don't want you internal...

    The obligatory Blackberry thread

In some countries Apple pretty owned the education sector (Apple IIe, Mac Classic, Mac LC series), but with win95 completely died from that market segment. Also quite popular in SMB and home market when most realised Commodore was dead. May be not in the US, but certainly in the rest of the world.

    OpenIndiana vs Solaris 11 zones

Exactly. You tell the DHCP server to update the sites DNS records, and in your nsswitch.conf configuration on each host, you should have something like: hosts: files dns mdns ipnodes: files dns mdns which tells the localhost to look at /etc/hosts, then query dns, etc. to configure on the...

    OpenIndiana vs Solaris 11 zones

That's certainly unusual. I would post a message to the OpenIndiana mail list and see if you get a response there. It certainly appears that your not inheriting any underlying filesystems? Basically to set writable all you would have to do is: $su # chown root:root <folder> # chmod 777...

in zonecfg for the selected zone, when you run "info" what "inherit-pkg-dir:" are listed? (and similar for all other zones on the same box). It sounds like something is locking /opt ? And when as root, the change of permissions and ownership is not working? Also, just want to clarify, what...

SSDs - State of the Product?

That's one of the factors with SSDs. Once you reach the point that you can't write to the drive, out comes the drills/hammers to destroy the drive. (Since erasure requires a write cycle).

SSDs - State of the Product?

Certainly, I wonder how far it'll go before we see SSDs are yearly replacement items. (most manufacturers only give 12mths on warranty, so what do they care that the duty cycle of drive will only last 18mth by design).

    OpenIndiana vs Solaris 11 zones

I know the full Solaris support contracts are $$$$, so have no issues with going with OpenIndiana. I don't know when or even if that will happen, but if you get...

Sol10 does support VNICs, but lack the virtual switching, routing and link throttling that possible with crossbow. BTW, the T4-4 gets you a unified 2TB of memory space... something that the blade setup lacks. (Mind you I would take the blade setup over a T4-4 anyday).
