    Where is the next CPU?

Microsoft Flight Simulator X uses more than 2GB of RAM under Vista. I've never seen it use more than 1.6GB under XP though. Many other games must blow 2GB of used RAM under Vista.

    Where is the next CPU?

This chip is based on the old Core 2 Quad architecture, not the new i7 one. It will yield significantly to a similarly-priced Xeon X55xx chip. I knew about the great price of the Z8NA-D6 and that's why I brought it here. Instead of using two X5580, I would have chosen two X5540. Their price...

    Where is the next CPU?

Why didn't you build something on top of that motherboard? Add two X5500 series Xeon and you would have had eight i7 cores at your service for not much more money than what you've spent already. This board accepts unbufferred memory up to 24GB, so RAM wouldn't have been a problem.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

The Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla wer respectively the 6th and 5th most sold vehicles in the U.S. last year. Both have been top rated by the IIHS for their 2009 models (those who were sold during the second part of last year). Both offer better than 30 miles per gallon. People in the U.S...

    USB-to-NAS device

Normal 3.5" SATA drives eat less than 20W. Green drives are consuming between 8W and 12W. Laptop drive (mecanical) use less than 5W. Greg's drives (scuzzies) can climb up to almost 30W. Or at least they used to. That's all from my memory and mostly came from old SR's database.

    System build review

For gaming, Phenom II X3 usually beat similarly priced Intel Core 2 Duo. They also dissipate a few more watts, but since the Radeon HD 4770 is very reasonnable in that regard, any modern PSU would be enough to power up such system. Not that what you assembled is bad. I'm simply telling you it...

    Centralizing home storage...thoughts?

Are you serious? I've configured FreeNAS on a 1.7GHz Celeron and it was fine. You don't need processing power for a NAS. Most commercial solutions use embedded chips like AMD Geode and such (way slower than even an Atom).

The best low-to-mid-range NAS I know are made by Synology. Their latest two drives model has been reviewed by X-bit Labs and they liked it a lot. They also sell a 4 drives models (DS409+) that should do everything you want. The network speed is very good too.

My new build for basic home users

An Atom, even a dual core one, is sluggish. IMO, you would be better with an Athlon X2 7750 or a Pentium Dual Core E5200, the two current best values in the low-end segment (at least here). I'm sure there are mini-iTX motherboards with an AM2+ or LGA775 socket.

Almost nobody cares about BSD anymore.

I'm mostly interested in FreeBSD because of the security level it provides. OpenBSD is supposed to be the least hackable OS, but FreeBSD should inherit most of the security benefits OpenBSD has. I have no proof for this position, just simple assosciation logic. FreeBSD should have many more...

Asus Rampage II GENE into Antec NSK3480?

I remember Mercutio bitching against the lack of space within the Antec NSK3480 enclosure. According to the specifications, it should accomodate a motherboard up to 9.6" by 9.6", which is exactly the size of an Asus Rampage II GENE motherboard (smallest Core i7 motherboard available). So...

    better Nvidia drivers for folding?

I can already see the difference. Each frame of the same unit (Project 5904, Run 4, Clone 39, Gen 4 - using FAH Core 14) took almost 6 minutes with the 180.?? driver I used and they now take less than 4 minutes. I expect my output to increase by at least 50%, if not more.

Of course you can. It is capable of using two DIMMs in dual channel, but it is in no way required to. The Radeon HD 4670 is acceptable, but a good 20% slower than the GeForce 9600GT. The HD 4830 is much faster (but consumes easily twice as much power).
