    Brrrrrrrr....so bloody cold

My outdoor thermometer read -1° F last night. I heard with the wind chills it felt like -35° F. I walked a few blocks when it was about 10°. The wind made it brutal, sort of like being on a mountain during a whiteout. This is the coldest NYC has been since 1994. I can only imagine what...

    I started running again

Cycling when the weather allows (which it hasn't for two weeks if you count that I'm also still getting over the flu) and walking at least a mile (frequently much more) each day. Other than that, not much on a consistent basis. Digging in the garden is a great workout, but that's a seasonal...

    40MB MFM Hard Disks

I have 2 20MB MFM drives in an 8086 which I'm basically keeping as a working "museum piece", but they're not for sale obviously. However, I do occasionally find old stuff by the curb. If I come across a working MFM drive in the course of my travels I'll give you a PM. In the meantime, you...

    Brrrrrrrr....so bloody cold

A short summer? Seriously, though, love of warm or hot weather certainly isn't universal. While I'll admit -31°C might be a bit too cold for me, I'd be very happy if it never got warmer than about 50°F in NYC. I just don't see any point to warm weather.

    speaker hiss

It's a stretch but you could be picking of 60 Hz line noise because of the speaker wire acting as an antenna. Only thing that might help is changing all the connections to shielded wire, and even then I'm not sure. The amp should have had filters to reject 60 Hz to prevent just this sort of...

    Brrrrrrrr....so bloody cold

Sure, I have A/C also, but I like to go out for walks, bike rides, touring around Manhattan. In the summer I just can't do any of those things without feeling very uncomfortable most of the time, so in effect I'm trapped indoors for three months and/or forced to do everything after the sun...

    Brrrrrrrr....so bloody cold

Funny how quickly people forget the horribly hot summers and then complain how cold it is. It was 3°F here this morning-beautiful winter weather. If I had a proper sleeping bag I even would have slept outside in the yard. This cold weather is helping to clear up my flu. I can't say hot...

    The flu sucks :(

:mrgrn: Actually, I try to let the bullets enter my ear so they just come out the other ear. It's mostly empty space in between so that usually works. I think it was pretty obvious which sentence was a tall story, wasn't it? Now I have seen people who were shot (this is NYC, after all), but...

    The flu sucks :(

If it wasn't smallpox it was chicken pox. Smallpox happened to come to mind first. I know it was some sort of pox. My memory isn't too good these days for diseases I had 30+ years ago. I wasn't aware that the last case of smallpox in the US was that long ago, or that it had such a high...

    The flu sucks :(

Isn't SARS much worse than smallpox? Lots of kids had smallpox in NYC back in the 1960s when I was a kid IIRC, and it wasn't any worse than the flu. It certainly wasn't unusual or anything that would raise an alarm with the CDC, but at least they have a vaccine for it now. I had measles, too...

    The flu sucks :(

Well, my temperature has been 97.7°F (normal for me) for two days in a row but I still feel horribly weak. I did manage to get out Tuesday but only felt well enough to walk about two miles. I really hope I get my strength back soon. I really can't do anything for more than an hour, and then I...

    Coffee

Compared to most other soft drinks, Coke and Pepsi have more sugar, more calories, more caffeine, and more carbonation (which leads to a bloated feeling). Not to mention serving sizes are getting ridiculous. I'm frequently amused at the TV commercials on drugs for frequent urination. Do the...

    Coffee

Coke and Pepsi are disgusting. And both have a severe laxative effect on me, even with only one glass. I never saw why they are so popular. I remember one of my relatives went overseas, and she said that they don't understand why we Americans drink Coke by the gallon. Over there they only...

    The flu sucks :(

First time in a few days that I actually posted in threads besides this one. Still a long way to go before I feel normal, no doubt about it. Not quite as tired as before. I don't know whether to attribute this to the smaller doses of medication, my body getting used to no caffeine (no coffee...

    Coffee

I doubt two cups a day qualifies me as an addict. I used to drink three but then cut down to keep from feeling wired all day. I haven't had any for the last few days. I think it's more a habit than anything, although as addictions go it's probably one of the least harmful ones in moderation.

Most stupid waste of $700 I ever saw

I think TrintonAzaleth in that thread may by another of Gigger Hertz/trollaxer's alter egos. Check out this SR profile, apparently of the real Trinton Azaleth. Good detective work, Jake. Now that's he's found out, it should be interesting to see what happens.

    The flu sucks :(

No alcohol for me until I'm off this medication for a while (I'm just an occasional, social drinker anyway). In fact, the symptoms seemed somewhat better so I cut my dosage to one caplet every six hours. This seemed the prudent thing to do as acetaminophen seems none too good for you long term...

    The flu sucks :(

Thanks guys for the suggestions and sympathies. This is the first time since I posted yesterday that I feel well enough to sit for a few minutes and post again. I'm taking something with acetaminophen (500 mg), chlorpheniramine maleate (2mg), dextromethorphan hydrobromide (15 mg), and...

    The flu sucks :(

Anyone else going through this? My mom was sick before Christmas, and eventually diagnosed with the flu and bronchitis. I think I've got at least the flu. Temp was 101.7° F early this morning. Normal for me is around 97°F. I go from ready to pass out to able to sit for a little while in...

    Happy New Year!

Merc more or less echoed my thoughts on the New Year. At least I have an excuse to get drunk once a year and watch the Twilight Zone all day. Outside of that I don't see that anything is different from last year, or the year before. Same crap in the papers each day, same powerless feeling to...

That's certainly pretty good news. It sounds to me like she got used to all the attention from you while she was sick, and her following you around is like saying thanks. Or maybe I just read too much into what animals do.

    Suggestions for new power supply

Interesting review, and one thing I like about the supply is the total of 8 connectors for IDE devices. My current supply has the usual four, so I had to solder on a few spare plugs I had to power all my devices (3 hard drives, 2 optical drives, and an IDE Zip drive). Nice to know I won't need...

    Suggestions for new power supply

Any thoughts on the Seasonic Super Tornado 300w Active PFC Silent Power Supply or the Enlight HPC-360-102? Are either of these auctions overpriced or are there any other issues with either of these? I'm not sure if I would want to spend the $65 shipped that the Seasonic will run but the price...

    RIP MSI YMFPOS

This sounds to me like it might be the power supply going bad or even gone bad. Random problems that get worse and worse seems to point in that direction. Of course, the M/B failing might act the same way. Anyway, if you have a spare PSU I would swap that in and see if it works. It certainly...

    What did Santa bring you?

Funny, something very similar happened to my sister a few years ago. The deer put a big dent in the rear quarter panel. I'm also glad you're OK. I was thinking of saying that maybe this deer is exacting some revenge for all his cousins that you shot but then that wouldn't be very nice of me...

I feel really badly for you, and know how you feel having lost two myself in the last year. It's sad enough when a pet dies at a fairly old age as mine did, but poor Jake was barely middle-aged. I know nothing anyone says will make this better, but you have my sincerest condolences...

    Suggestions for new power supply

Very interesting. Only drawbacks are it would come to $65 shipped, and there is no warranty as the PSU has been opened. I wonder where he's getting the stock units from to be able to add a fan, charge a little for the work, and still sell pretty cheaply? That might be the ticket for me-a...

    Suggestions for new power supply

Not now, but in the future with more sophistcated metering they may, and my PC is on a lot. Also, PFC reduces power line harmonics, and these can interfere with other equipment, including the very PC being powered by the power supply. PFC seems like the way of the future, so why not get a...

    Suggestions for new power supply

You guys are really throwing a monkey wrench in the works here. ;) If only the FSP350-60PN had active PFC then I would have no good reason not to buy it. It's quiet, has a higher rated power, and is probably more efficient. And the price is right. What it's starting to come down to is one...

    Suggestions for new power supply

I just compared that Sparkle power supply to the original one I linked to. The model numbers are very similar-FSP300-60GRE (yours) versus FSP300-60PFN (mine). Looking at the specs and all the rest, I think the only difference between the two is that mine has active PFC and yours doesn't...

    Suggestions for new power supply

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. The Antec suggested by Fushigi and the Fortron suggested by Cougtek are both interesting, and cost little enough above the one I'm looking at that I would consider either. I'm leaning towards the Fortron as it's a little less and I like the 120mm fan (the...

    Random Hard Drive Shutdowns

    Suggestions for new power supply

As some of you may know from reading this thread I'm in the market for a new power supply. I'm leaning towards this one as the price is right and it has most of the things I'm looking for (active PFC and fairly silent operation). I know the ones from Thermaltake and Seasonic are better, but I...

    What did Santa bring you?

My father got my new bedroom fixture and an additional shoplight for my workroom. My mom got me a sweat jacket and another gift of my own choosing (maybe that will be a power supply to replace my flaky one). My brother gave me $50. Santa brought me a lump of coal. Christmas is really for...

    Random Hard Drive Shutdowns

It turns out the 40 GB drive is not the culprit. My 80 GB Diamondmax Plus 9 may be. Or perhaps my power supply is starting to get flacky and the DM Plus 9 interacts with it in such a way as to get the problem to manifest itself. I temporarily disconnected the DM Plus 9 and so far the problem...

    6500K (Daylight) CFLs......

A couple of useful links here: GE fluorescent products catalog Philips fluorescent/CFL catalog Sylvania fluorescent catalog These should help if anyone needs to find a particular type of tube. Philips makes a daylight T-8 tube that has better specs (2850 lumens, 86 CRI) than GE's (2700...

Most stupid waste of $700 I ever saw

Read this thread and weep. I knew the level of technical expertise (and common sense) on SR was sinking, but this takes the cake. This guy spent $700 upgrading a Pentium Pro system, including $410 on RAM. :clown:  :clown: If this isn't the dumbest thing I've yet seen someone do, then I...

    H2

This should get you started. By assuming the mass per mole of hydrogen gas (i.e. 2 atoms per molecule) is 2.01594 grams, I end up with a lifting power of 506.39 grams (1.1164 lbs) per cubic meter at STP. Naturally, you need to subtract the weight of the balloon holding the hydrogen to get the...

    About lapping...

I doubt it would make that much difference-maybe a degree or two. This isn't that important for a microprocessor. However, in the case of thermoelectrics where 2 degrees cooler on the hot side means about 1.4 degrees cooler on the cold side, it is worth it (at least to me). I'll go with 600...

Freak wet-sand the north bridge of his nForce2 mainboard.

Dumb ass. For things this uneven there are thermal pastes with silver which are ten times better than the normal silicon oxide pastes. Besides that, you're only dealing with a few watts on a fairly large surface area. The clue here is that there is no metal slug on top of the IC package like...

    6500K (Daylight) CFLs......

I've looked at a lot of CFL comparisons, and 82 seems to be the CRI of almost all of the recent ones. Based on comparing my desklight CFL to the tubes, I would say that 82 is a fair guess. Reds rendered very slightly better under the 4-foot tubes than under the CFLs, but other than that I...
