Video editing solution? Burning to DVD?

Pretty much the same as Greg stated at the start of the thread: convert VCR recordings to DVD. The ability to clean up the picture would be nice, but I think the main priority is reliable, easy to use software. If Ulead works okay, that might do, but it would be good to have options - such as...

    Socket A dregs

I've just had to replace a couple of socket A boards due to capacitor failures, and boy, there sure isn't much choice left (the originals were Epox, but I insist on replacing with other brands). The local Gigabyte supplier only had two models, one of which was superseded some time ago (eg...

    Epox 8KHA+ leaky capacitors

Well, I now have a 100% failure rate on Epox boards sold between two and four years ago (at least, on the 8 or so boards I have been able to keep track of). The last two, bought two years ago (8RDA+ and 8RDA3+) failed within a week of each other - the former without warning but the latter had...

Belated happy Canada Day, early Independence Day to everyone

Australia Day isn't considered a particularly special day. The indigenous population even considers it 'Invasion Day'. Independence didn't happen until federation on January 1 1901. Unfortunately, that's the day after New Year's Eve, so no-one notices very much. :tgif: Of the various public...

Video editing solution? Burning to DVD?

I'm looking for an update to this thread, particularly on hardware connection solutions. Will any old VIVO display adaptor do, or is a TV card a better idea? I notice that Leadtek offers a basic capture card, but I have no idea if it's any use at all. For a VIVO solution, I need a PCI-e card...

    Ban the power brick

I don't think this is true. You may lower design costs for your appliance, but the external power supplies will cost more than an internal. Apart from anything else, regulatory requirements are tougher to meet on external bricks. Heat dissipation can actually be harder to manage with a brick -...

    Low budget computer

Whether they are Socket A or Socket 754, nearly all Semprons have a 256kB Level 2 cache, which is half that of the Barton and double the older Duron. The 'exclusive' cache architecture means we are supposed to add the Level 1 cache to get the effective size, i.e. 384kB (or 640kB for Athlon 64...

    I'm in love

Found these 20m passive cables, but haven't yet tried them. They're probably available for about $100 in the US. The situation that opened my eyes to the potential difference was with ATI cards rather than nVidia. Increasingly, I suspect it's got more to do with the monitor than the graphics card.

Who cares? They're both reasonable products from competent manufacturers with mostly adequate drivers. The 6600GT may have a slight performance edge, but I doubt that you'd notice. Both Merc and Tannin were once right, but I think they're a little stuck in their ways. :) Leadtek stuff is...

    File corruption with WD800JB

You must have read a different thread to me ... Quite a few folks had problems with SiL controllers - there was a known problem with these that required motherboard firmware upgrades. At least one solved his problem by changing his CD/DVD drive - which kind of makes sense. Have you tried this...

    Digital Camera

Most name-brand NiMH batteries, including Energizer and Kodak, are made by Sanyo. Batteries actually branded as Sanyo tend to have more conservative (i.e. realistic) ratings. If the highest rated Sanyo is 2500mAh, then it would be very surprising if any other battery - 2800mAh rated or not - is...

    Digital Camera

This is true in principle but not in practise. All things being equal, four-cell cameras pull half as much current as two-cell, and voltage doesn't sag nearly as much. But with two-cell, you're operating with very little voltage; the camera will always be closer to its shutdown threshold. For...

    A8N-SLI Data Corruption

ATA or SATA? Which driver? The nForce 4 pack from nVidia's website? Others here may dispute this, but if you check Google, there are no known corruption problems with the current nForce drivers. I suggest you look more closely at your drive, data and power cabling, RAM, motherboard, etc.

What anti-spyware anti-adware combos do you use nowadays?

MS Antispyware may well be useful for removing infections, but I sure wouldn't want to live with it - one of the most invasive programs I've seen for years. Trend Penicillin update

AFAIK, everything in the A/V market works on a one year subscription. There are probably two main reasons why some of us recommend NOD32: 1. It is less invasive/intrusive than most. 2. It has less impact on PC performance than most. You should probably give it a try.

Why do Socket 939 Boards suck so much?

Apart from the early version 2.03 I mentioned, I've never had occasion to check the version - they just worked. A quick look on an nForce2 machine shows a date of 2003.09.22. On the nForce3 machine in front of me it says 2004.06.03. The former is PATA and the latter SATA. Perhaps your extensive...

    Special IDE cable requirements.

In theory, you should be able to remove the second connector and reposition it elsewhere on the cable. Something Random

I hadn't realized that the 120mm Panaflos were quiet. If you cut the voltage by half, maybe ... In any case, I don't think you'll be happy with a 120mm fan and converter combo. :( It may be worth trying a different 90mm fan, but it sounds like you should try a different CPU cooler altogether.

Why do Socket 939 Boards suck so much?

Any reason you can't do the same with the nForce drivers (possibly excluding nForce4)? The accelerated nForce2 IDE driver had some compatibility problems in early 2003. AFAIK, subsequent drivers have been fine. In fact, once Ahead issued an update for their software in mid 2003, I happily used...

Why do Socket 939 Boards suck so much?

Unless you need to access more than 3GB of RAM ... Although Merc had troubles with driver support, I don't believe you're running anything that hasn't got readily available 64-bit drivers, including the Matrox card. As WinXP-64 happily runs 32-bit applications, I can't see why you shouldn't try...

Why do Socket 939 Boards suck so much?

Tannin almost saves me a post. I agree with every single thing he says, although nForce 1 and 2 haven't been quite as bad for me - I found it depended very much on the manufacturer. That doesn't change the fact that I think nForce 3 is great and nForce 4 just terrific (excellent gigabit...

    Buying 17" LCD monitors

Well, we've had a sample Acer 1715SMD here for a couple of days now, and it's shaped up pretty well. One stuck pixel (green) - 5/6 of the way across and halfway up. Doesn't particularly bother me. Includes a DVI cable - this is worth quite a bit here because I haven't found a cheap wholesale...

    Buying 17" LCD monitors

I'd guess your assessment is spot on. The issue is interference, resulting in 'worms' and possibly a jittery picture. Buying 17" LCD monitors

Thanks for the links. Although I was aware that faster panels were associated with shrinking viewing angles, I didn't know why, or about the massive reduction in color gamut. File corruption with WD800JB

Yes, 5 meters. I've used USB 1.1 further than that, but I imagine you'd be pushing it with USB 2.0. AFAIK, many cables designed for USB 1.1 work just fine with USB 2.0. My unscientific rule of thumb is to look at the cable thickness - you don't see many thin USB 2.0 cables. :)
