    Steve Irwin dead

A bull ray barely qualifies as a stingray - it's much bigger than normal, at up to 4.3m long and 350kg. Steve was effectively stabbed to death with a barbed spear. The latest reports suggest he remained conscious long enough to pull the broken barb out, which undoubtedly made things much worse...

    Steve Irwin dead

Stung through the heart by a stingray barb. Really shocking - he seemed indestructible. Some of the news services are a little overloaded; he was incredibly well-known around the world. His wife is yet be informed, she was trekking in the wilderness. :( ABC News Corp Sydney Morning Herald...

    Something Random

Mubs, Merc, I feel your pain. My facial hair is coarse and irregular. Rather than being fashionably elegant with designer stubble, my desperado appearance tends to frighten children and animals. I've always found safety razors ineffective, like using a pen knife to cut grass - I need a mower...

Is it possible to buy MS Powerpoint separately?

You can't buy Powerpoint separately, but believe it or not, you may be able to get away with Open Office - it does a superb job of opening and editing PP presentations. If only Excel compatibility was that good ... :(

    Lost Windows Key

After I emphasized the importance of the Winblows XP product key sticker (as opposed to the booklet and CD), a customer managed to lose it. I came across the rather wonderful Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder that reveals the product key for Windows and Office. Unfortunately, this installation is...

    Recovering from head crash

I'm attempting to salvage a Samsung 200GB SATA drive with head crash symptoms, specifically, two bad areas. What's frustrating me is that the first area at least is right in the middle of the directory/FAT data (it's a 10GB FAT32 partition), and most of the files and directories are consequently...

    New Joke Thread

An Irishman walks into a bar in Dublin, orders three pints of Guinness and starts drinking a sip out of each one in turn. The barman asks him why and the Irishman tells him he has two brothers, one in the US, the other in Australia. "When we all left home, we promised that we'd drink this way to...

    Smarter malware

I remember when my computers never ever got infected. Ah, that was before I had kids ... As near as I can tell, the victim received an MSN message that encouraged her to download some software; I'm told it appeared to come from one of her friends. :-? After opening it, the antivirus software...

S939 is dead, long live S940 (Mk. II)

I may be off-base here, but my understanding is that AMD stands to gain far more from drops in RAM latency, given the low inherent latency of their on-die controller. Dramatic drops in latency of high speed DDR2 may not be all that far away: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=32267

I just ordered some "cheap" systems...

Well, no it won't actually, thanks to the laptop drive. :( I agree about the Sempron 3100; in essence it's an A64 2800 (1.8GHz)with half the cache (256kB instead of 512kB), so many apps will perform similarly.

    USB hub

Yep. No, it's an almost completely useless and stupid idea. USB provides power to many of the devices that plug into it, eg: keyboard, mouse, tablet, scanner (LIDE), MP3 player, USB drive, game controller, card reader, some hard drives, etc. Wireless = Powerless = 'wall warts' for as far as the...

    Network problem after power outage

Here's the scenario: LAN with a 10/100 switch. There's a separate DSL router. Three workstations have fixed IP addresses; the rest are dynamic, served up by the router, but all specify the router as gateway. Printing is direct to fixed address print servers (no file server queues). After a...

    Antec power supplies

Ddrueding, fans are a relatively expensive component and case-PS combinations vary over time and from country to country, so I don't know if it's possible to recommend anything with full confidence. At least Antec is widely available, and I know you like the plug-in-cables and other gadgets. ;)...

    Antec power supplies

IMO, you're off-base in your approach. You're trying to buy a 400W power supply (and case) for a modest amount of money. The only way this is possible is to skimp on PS quality. The configuration you described wouldn't stretch a decent 250W power supply - a 300W would be more than adequate...

    Intel strikes back

Well, I included the link so people could read it. And I'm not interested in his opinion, let alone what some big mouths have to say about him. I'm sure the new Intel CPUs are a huge improvement over the P4 architecture - otherwise there'd be no point in Intel continuing in the processor...

    archival of wedding CDs

Sorry Sol, but that's nonsense. Some paper and pigment ink combinations are good for at least 100 years (i.e. in a completely different league to traditional prints), and pigment inks are now widely available on photo inkjet printers. You're absolutely right about the cost of the prints, though.

Changing the windows product key on an existing installation

You can repair or upgrade (from XP) with the OEM version, so I'd assume you can do it with the Upgrade version. However, you probably won't be able to use a legit key with hacked media because the latter is normally based on a corporate (volume) version. Use the correct media and all should be...
