    Building a dirt-cheap HTPC....

The paint looks pretty good to me. They even included a little black cloth to dust the thing with ;) But I am careful with "piano black" cases. And as my workbench was full, I assembled this one on a rug on the floor.

    Building a dirt-cheap HTPC....

Finnished assembly. My only other complaints would be that the motherboard only came with one IDE cable, and that the location of the IDE ports prevented 2 devices from being used on a channel - they barely reached at all. The system is fairly quiet considering the completely stock cooling...

    How do people meet people?

Well, I've actually had 2 true relationships in my life. The first we got engaged our second year together and halfway though the third she called me to let me know she was leaving for Brazil with another man. I never saw her again. This was the original trigger of my crash, exacerbated by a...

    How do people meet people?

Merc, Thanks for sharing a certainly difficult part of your life. From where I stand, it seems you did everthing the way I would like to say I would have done it (the "right way", IMHO). If I were to be way too bold and offer some completely unqualified analysis, it would be this: Perhaps...

    [NEWS] - Opteron 248 vs. Xeon 3.2A

That depends on whether they ever intended to upgrade their system. While the Opteron might add another 50% to it's speed though it's lifetime, I doubt Xoens will get much past 3.4GHz.

    [NEWS] - Opteron 248 vs. Xeon 3.2A

Yep, considering the performance is close, the added benefits of the Opteron make it a clear winner IMHO.

    HD read/write question

Indeed. Don't think that I'm complaining, though...I'm only using the first 5GB of each of my raptors in RAID0 :D Seeks and transfer rates are pretty darn good.

    HD read/write question

Blake: Yeah, I got the reson behind the outside being faster. But by doing head switches across all the heads to keep the "beginning" of the drive all in the outside is intentionally making the outside of the drive significantly faster. If you were to allow all the tracks on head 0 to be read...

    How do people meet people?

Well. sounds like you've done better than me. Although "hitting bottom" was a fairly effective kick in the ass. If you were to commit to something huge, then burn some bridges behind you, you might be able to spur some motivation. It sounds like a big change may be necissary.

Splash: What are you using for new systems at work?

Depends on what you're doing with the system 90% of the time XP Pro will be fine, 70% of the time XP Home will be fine. I used to live on the corner of Euclid and Virginia (north side) BTW...

    HD read/write question

So taking this a little deeper... If changing tracks is faster than changing heads, why isn't it faster to run though all the tracks before changing heads?

    What about Howard Dean?

I think the local talk radio got it right: 1. It's fu*king Iowa, who cares what they think?* 2. If it's that close, does "winning" mean anything anyway? 3. If it's that close, does that mean they are all above the bar? Or all a big dissapointment? *Another point made by the host was that a...
