    More Vista nonsense

...and of you ran Windows 2000, it would be faster still! Where are my DOS disks... The people whining and delaying switching to Vista did the same before going to XP and 2000.

    More Vista nonsense

Yes, but only because I had them sitting around. My next set will certainly be a pair of SSDs in RAID-0. And for those who loathe RAID-0, I have 3 36GB raptors in an array for my games ;)

    More Vista nonsense

Nope. Not yet, anyway. I've read a few guides online about disabling stuff, but I've kept it to the basics, and I'm not really waiting for the machine, ever.

    More Vista nonsense

In my experience, it isn't. With the following caveats. 1. You need modern hardware. a. 2GB+ RAM b. 3D accelerated video card with significant ram c. At least a modern 7200RPM hard drive 2. You need to disable the crap a. System Restore b. Indexing c. Windows Defender d. Transition-effect eye...

    July 22nd Intel price drops

Depends on what (or how many things) you are doing. Many tasks don't use multiple cores, so you would only be using 1/4 or your CPU. If you have a lot of things going at once, it will really pay off.

    Meta-tagging video files?

I have a fairly large collection of video and audio files. The reason such a large audio collection is still useful is because of the ID3 tags, and comments that I add, being searchable(sp?) and easily modifiable. I would love to be able to add words / descriptive fields to my video files. Are...

Your anti-virus software: Which, why, how?

The amount of fiddling required to make some programs work without giving the user admin rights in XP is really insane. Vista is a bit better at that, but not much.

    Laptop Recommendation Please

While at work, do you use an attached monitor/keyboard/mouse? I find anything less than a 19" 4:3 to be sub-optimal for work. I've grown quite attached to the 22" 4:3 I have at home. As your computing needs seem to be quite basic, I'd recommend not spending more than $900-$1000 on the machine...

    Laptop Recommendation Please

I just threw together a Latitude D520 as follows: Core2Duo @ 2Ghz 2GB RAM 80GB 7200RPM Hard Drive DVD-RW 802.11g / Bluetooth 15" XGA 4:3 screen ~$1200 I would put the rest into a port replicator, nice monitor, keyboard and mouse. I think too little emphasis is put on the parts that you...

    Laptop Recommendation Please

Dell Latitude or Lenovo are my favorites. Dell Inspiron and HP/Compaq are my least favorite. The biggest question probably is, how much traveling will this laptop do and therefore how big a screen do you want?

I've been using Google Docs almost exclusively for a few months now. Really pleased with it. The only thing that is more cumbersome than it needs to be is to attach a document or spreadsheet to a GMail message (.doc, .pdf, etc). You need to export the file to your computer, than attach it to...

    Something Random

I order all my Mini-ITX stuff from these guys. This time I was in a big hurry, I placed the order 30 minutes ago with overnight service. Out of desperation I included a comment that offered additional money for expedited service. I got a call 10 minutes ago from the owner, informing me that...

Installing XP from SATA optical drives

No idea. None of them were failures, really. Considering that at every step of the way I was booting Ubuntu and running all the tests (drive fitness, prime95, memtest86+, BIOS voltages/temps). I even installed Vista on a number of the configurations, just to see what was going on. Everything...

outer diameter hard disk and partitioning

I created the RAID-0 array, then partitioned the first 50GB (10GB per drive) for the OS. Of course, you should never put important data on a RAID-0, so the rest of the drives are not particularly useful. IIRC, Linux now supports software RAID that allows the first chunk to be RAID-0 and the rest...

outer diameter hard disk and partitioning

I too thought it was outside-in. Seagate Tech Paper (PDF) I've done it in the past; building a large array of drives, creating a RAID-0 with the first 10GB or so of each. It is pretty quick, but SSDs are quicker.

    BlueDisc Ray

There is a maximum speed at which a plastic disc can spin without shattering. It is roughly equivalent to 52x for CDs and 18x for DVDs. You won't find faster drives, because physics prevents it. If you were waiting to buy into BlueRay until it became commodity hardware, knowing how fast they...
