I have a MySpace OMFG lol

When I owned the game center, it had a myspace account that I had one of the kids maintain (events, etc). I couldn't stand to even look at it. My GF has been visiting a classmates-like website (for Russia) lately, she's bummed 'cause all her ex-boyfriends are ugly ;)

    Partition resizing in Vista

Speeds to the array in Vista: Write: 140MB/s Read: 170MB/s Honestly good enough for my personal use ;) and not far from the RAID-0 of raptors (150MB/s Write, 170MB/s Read) There would be, except that I am just not that much of a multi-tasker. Lately I've been running my video compression...

    Partition resizing in Vista

I had no idea a RAID-5 array could be this fast. Currently I have the following in my system: (Driven off the onboard SATA RAID controller) 2x 74GB Raptors in RAID-0 for the OS (Off the 3Ware 9650SE-16ML) 3x 36GB Raptors in RAID-0 for games 6x 750GB Seagate in RAID-5 for data Each of these...

Not this user. They already purchased one of these (Max Res 852x480). And have said it is to last them many years. If they change their mind, they can upgrade their HTPC as well.

    Best onboard video?

uda, Where the hell did that come from? I'll tackle it line-by-line, but I understand why so many people block you. The information I was after when I started the thread was listed at the top. As with most projects, it develops over time. As new information was available, I posted it. As...

    Best onboard video?

Merc, the destination is really low res...I don't think any 1080i content will ever be displayed. 720P content played just fine. Thanks for the tip on DriveSpeed. udaman, thanks for the tip on that motherboard. It looks promising, except for the manufacturer (IIRC, the budget branch of ASUS)...

    Best onboard video?

Nope, I can't hear it; that is the point. The Dynamat is to make the optical drive as quiet as possible. And it is pretty darn quiet.
  12. ddrueding

    Best onboard video?

I would argue that it is still harder to cool, even after the budget has been maxed. This system already is loaded with Dynamat extreme and has the quietest 120mm Scythe S-Flex 800rpm fan soft-mounted internally with ducting. The 2.5" SATA hard drive is acoustically insulated and soft-mounted as...

  14. ddrueding

    Best onboard video?

That is actually better than I was expecting, and good enough. HTPCs are supposed to be small and silent; that is much easier to do without unnecessary components. It already has a tuner card, and adding a video card would increase the cooling needs significantly, making it that much harder to...

    Best onboard video?

Just for grins I tried the onboard video on a board I had sitting around (Gigabyte GA-945GZM-S2) with a 2 Ghz C2D and 1GB RAM. It can handle DVDs fine, and 720P with minimal issues, but 1080i stuff falls apart. For my needs, I suppose this could work. I'll just need to downsample the...

    Best onboard video?

Yeah, I know onboard sucks. But for this application (HTPC), an expansion card isn't an option. What I am looking for primarily is smooth video playback and gaming at low resolutions (below 1024*768) output over VGA. So I'm really looking for the best of the worst. Thanks for the links. Looks...

Barracuda ES, worth the price over 7200.10?

I have never had a problem with Seagates from Newegg. Only WDs, and I blame WD. I love the Sony Mini USB thumbdrives, but they are quite slow. All that I care is that they are fast enough to stream MP3s off of. On another note, does anyone here know the exact spacing for the mounting screws on...

Your anti-virus software: Which, why, how?

Never tried it. To be honest, I've considered it malware; not because I've seen it do something bad, but because it is usually one of the countless "anti-virus" programs I see on systems that are really screwed up.

Barracuda ES, worth the price over 7200.10?

Loving them. Even with just the 6, I'm getting 130MB/s reads and writes. I've never had an issue, even though they are presently 50C+ 24/7 (due to poor case design).
  26. ddrueding

Barracuda ES, worth the price over 7200.10?

Since I knew I was building a RAID-5 array, I started with 750GB drives. Now as 750GB drives come down in price, I can continue adding without having too many drives total. I'm falling below 400GB free on the main array, so I'll be adding another drive soon.

    Automotive Fuses from Harbor Freight

Harbor Freight is primarily a brick and mortar establishment, so buying stuff like this from them is not far-fetched. They are notorious for selling the cheapest stuff they could find in China; no quality control at all.
  28. ddrueding

Barracuda ES, worth the price over 7200.10?

I'm thinking that the only differences are firmware and possibly cherry-picked motors/actuators. I don't think it could possibly be worth the price difference unless performance/reliability were at a serious premium.

    Water Cooled Hard Drives

I'm considering water cooling because of the space considerations. In order to have 11 (soon 12) hard drives cooled quietly, there needs to be a lot of space around them. Just the hard drive compartment of my chassis is the size of a NSK2400, and the drives are still over 50C and too noisy. If...

    System restore problem

I've spent a fair amount of time working on systems that have it on or off. Software updates, driver updates, and add/remove programs absolutely drags with it running. You can also see it in the memory usage on XP and 2003 (not Vista because of it's "use it all-for now" memory philosophy).
