I'm not thinking about them here, I'm the one that has to drive it. Having 4 forward gears (vs. Mercedes' 7) will make it that much harder to accelerate smoothly and deal with the hills in the city. And I am paying for gas, so some sense of efficiency would be nice.

Looking at the DTS, I hope I get an "or similar". 4.6L engine that produces less than 300hp? A 4-speed automatic? I didn't even know they still made those! What crap.

Wow, uda, I hope you type fast, because that must have taken a while. I read at least the first couple sentences of each paragraph, honest ;) Weight/Mass is the easiest way to add safety, but it isn't the only way, and it isn't a guarantee of safety. Look at Formula One cars or the McLaren F1...

Her relatives are "big" so I was looking for a big car. I also wanted the most comfortable thing I could find, as I would be spending 5-ish hours driving it around. Driving big cars on SF streets doesn't bother me; I lived there for a number of years, many of those driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee...

Planning a sight-seeing trip in San Francisco for some of my GF's relatives who have a hard time walking. 70+ miles of driving, and all-day trip though SF. I'll be renting a Cadillac DTS (or similar) for the day, and will be insuring it out the wazoo. If that won't wear them out, I don't know...

    Is Photoshop CS3 worth the add'l $

I just wish they would do what Maya does. If you aren't profiting from their software, you can use it for free. I'd be OK using the educational package (or less) if I wasn't profiting from it. As soon as I begin to use software in a professional capacity, or profit from it in any way, I do buy it.

I'm aware of that, Mark. But does that mean we are doomed to an escalation of vehicle weights until we are all driving tanks? If a Miata (2400lbs) hits an Elise (1975lbs) it isn't that big a deal. It isn't until some fool shows up in an Escalade (5665lbs) or H1 Hummer (7213lbs) that there is an...

So the solution to heavy cars is to make them heavier? I don't see the logic there. If a Miata hits an Elise, what is the problem? Besides, speed and maneuverability are pro-active safety features. ;)

I've been tempted to buy a bike for years. The last time I had one I was too young and stupid. But I think I'm still stupid enough... Why the weight requirement? POP3 would work fine, just be sure to leave the messages on the server. 1. Open thunderbird with your old mail 2. Add your gmail account as a POP3 server (including "leave a copy on the server") 3. Let all your mail copy down I think that will do it.

Apple passes Intel & IBM in market cap @$162B

Considering all the other markets Apple is into, market cap is not a good measurement. What is their percentage of the OS market doing? 6%? Same as the last decade? Who cares if they sell a billion iPods, if they aren't going to knock MS down a peg, they aren't relevant.

    More Vista nonsense

Updating the driver with one provided by MS doesn't cause the problem (as through windows update). Loner beats the odds in auto fuel efficiency

I disagree. What I have noticed is that everyone becomes more afraid of losing what they have when they have more to lose. The bigger/richer someone (or some corporation) is, the less risk they are willing to take, and the more blind they become to potential improvements/innovations. The...

Great read, and I agree with the tone of the article. My impression goes something like this: All these really cool things are possible, but most are expensive up front.
