    Need new mobo: Suggestions?

What is the motherboard chipset and SATA chipset? You might get a BSOD right out the gate. A repair install is probably the safest way.

Need advice on disposing of Dad's hobby "stuff"

A friend's husband died a number of years ago, leaving quite a bit of stuff. Everything from woodworking tools to beat-up musical instruments to magazine collections, essentially a 3-car garage full and in no sort of order. I was able to find someone to take it all, in one day. The only rule was...

Need advice on disposing of Dad's hobby "stuff"

Isn't it worth what someone will pay for it? The fact that it was purchased for more doesn't really mean anything. In order to reduce the fees on eBay, I'd recommend selling in lots; more items per auction. The same for Craigslist as well; the idea is to get rid of it, no?

Oops I did it again...your BMI?

We went for a hike yesterday and got lost. Like 9 miles lost, 2 miles of which through knee-high marsh and scrub without trail. I didn't think Olga would survive it, but she didn't complain once until we got out. We went in at 11AM and got out just before sunset. I'll process some pictures at...

14 Watt Dimmable Neptun Bulb-Shaped CFL

Very interesting, but not very efficient. I was considering something along those lines for indirect room lighting (compact, high lumens, high CRI). Looks like the added space of an LED array is still worth it for the power savings.

Ipod Management Software that isn't iTunes?

I was told that all the neat software I used to use doesn't work on the newer ones, hopefully they will/have sorted that out. I don't own an iPod at the moment, so I can't say.

Not in any formal sense. I graduated high school with a 0.7GPA (lowest technically possible at the time, a point of misguided pride). Mine weren't quite as understanding. The rule was simple and very black and white. If I did what they wanted me to do then they would do what they could (not much). dSLR thread

So what do you use now, Lunar? My concern is that I like large format prints. 12" is about the smallest dimension that I'll want. This means that all the printers are really expensive. I have a great picture printed on canvas in my dining room, about 24"x40".

    Dell now available at Staples

Unfortunately, this is part of a larger sign that Merc brought up a while ago; they've decided to go the budget route, and compete directly with HP/Compaq, Toshiba, and Gateway on price. Meaning their build quality will be equally poor. I suspect there is room in the market for someone to take...

Interesting review. If I were to buy a photo printer, that would likely be it. However, having easy access to good prints from places online and nearby stores makes it a silly proposition. I ordered some 12"x56" panoramas the other day for $20 each, and I'm excited to see how they turn out...

    Should we ban disposable batteries?

This is the most important thing. It's fine that not charing completely or discharging completely aren't optimal, the question is: how tolerant are the batteries to this kind of treatment? Will they die 25% sooner? 50%? Worrying about batteries is not high on my list.

4 seconds? No, but 9+ would make the wait for a sufficiently large hole in traffic much longer. Same with passing; the size of the gap in oncoming traffic is not determined by the capabilities of the driver.

Where I will be living soon, 40-70mph acceleration is very important. Lots of 2-lane roads that go on for many miles. Lots of farm equipment and other trucks driving ~45mph. Not to mention freeways with left-turn lanes and stop signs instead of on-ramps. Those make 0-60 times quite relevant.

Typically these things drop in price once they hit numbers that are just better than existing tech. As we discussed in the car thread, people aren't likely to buy something that offers less than they currently have in any category. So, for the laptop market, that means ~128GB and ~50MB/sec...
