    Where's everybody?

Because it isn't possible to convince a majority of americans (who are, for the most part, morons) to do anything smart. As Jefferson said, a democracy only works if the populace is educated. It just isn't.

That I would certainly agree with. Anyone who wants to be president should not be allowed to have the job. Just draft someone every 2 years and call it good.

    Where's everybody?

Waiting at a client site in the middle of nowhere, waiting for AT&T MIS to call back. T-1s can be such a PITA if you aren't in a metropolitan area.

How much "online" storage do you have?

I wasn't sure how to count redundancy. I know several members use multiple copies managed independently. Counting without redundancy is tricky sometimes.

How much "online" storage do you have?

In and out. Total drive actively used for storage at your place (not business). I could have included the 120GB drive in the laptop, and the 40GB drive in the other laptop, and even the 2x74GB Raptor RAID-0 in the desktop; but it didn't seem significant compared to the rest.

    Something Random

I woke up this morning to my computer not on and not turning on. Bummer. It's on a UPS, so I didn't even think about the power. An hour later, it turns out the UPS had simply turned off. No warning, no buzzer, just off. How annoying. It's a Tripp-lite, for the record.

Thanks for the info Tannin. Uda, The EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS USM is on my shopping list to replace my kit lens. IS plus a little more reach. Of course, if a FF body is in your future, forget it.

I think more batteries is your solution, Tannin. You already have a good generator on hand (the engine) with a great source of fuel. Adding another (likely less efficient) generator specifically for this purpose doesn't make sense (to me anyway).

    Christmas Lights

A guy I knew a while ago had a second battery connected to his car just for auxiliary camping stuff. It charged off the car when it was running, but could be run completely dead and you could still start the car. Depending on how often you are driving from one place to the next, this could be a...

Thanks guys. The whole time I was out there I was thinking that a 300 is way too much; the objects that a 300 captures well I couldn't even see with my corrected vision. My first "real" bird pics (ie. pictures of a bird that wouldn't let me pet it). It's a hummingbird of some kind, I think a Broadbilled or Costa's, but I really have no idea. I know, the lighting is horrible and the noise @ ISO800 is a bit much.

    Where's everybody?

I don't think anyone will be saving us from this. Combining how buried we are (massive exports, massive debt, poor education, corruption and bloat) with our unsustainable expectations (federal assistance for cable TV?) means there is some well-deserved suffering to be had.

I've noticed that, too. My thoughts were to get it to render correctly in HTML first, then create PDF, plain text, and RTF versions based on it. It's easier to go from HTML to everything else than from anything else to HTML.

I keep finding myself attracted to primes because of their speed. Running around Disneyland at night with the 35/2 and the 50/1.8 I felt really empowered. Wow. Why didn't I think 300mm would be enough? That is a hell of a lot. And I'll need it faster than 5.6 for any hand-held action. I could barely manage one clean picture in 10 @ 1/60-1/90.

    RAID Adapter Advice

I am very spoiled by 3Ware controllers. They are not cheap, and certainly overkill for a mirrored set. But they do work very well. This is their lowest-end card for $150 If you want SATAII, it will cost you another $50.

DVD Hi-Def format war near end, Blu-ray wins?

Udaman, I suppose I've just seen the wrong ones then. Those I've seen had virtually 0 difference between the DVD and HD-DVD version. Merc, I haven't been looking in some time to be honest. I suppose I'll look again when more than 2-3 movies I want in HD aren't available in HD-DVD.

DVD Hi-Def format war near end, Blu-ray wins?

I got the XBox360 HD-DVD ROM when HD-DVD was first being cracked. I'll get a BR ROM when those are cracked. I like HiDef, I hate DRM. When I can get one without the other I'll buy in. I do appreciate the improved quality on new releases, though releasing older films on "HighDef" is a joke.

BitMicro preps 832GB SSD 2.5 inch SATA

    Samsung drives unreliable?

I have a larger number (more than 100 less than 200) of these drives deployed, and I haven't had any fail yet. It could be a bad batch, but I would be more suspicious of a power supply or heat issue. How confident are you in your other components and configuration?
