Low fps in 3D applications when PC not shutdown for several days

Agreed. Not much you can do as far as a solution. Open Task Manager and go to the "processes" tab. Check the "all users" box at the bottom. Then go to "View" and choose "Select Columns". Add the CPU Time and "Peak Memory Usage" items. After a reboot, take note of the items that use the most of...

Got 3 of the 1TB drives for a server project. Filled them with the same ~850GB of data, compared them. All fine, I'm happy.

M$ offers $44.6B for Yahoo-End of the world as we know it

Those are the big players, but the bulk of the IT sector has been spread out over smaller companies for a long time. Before there was PARC, Bell Labs, and IBM. I can't imagine being that much of a drone. Unless I can at least see the top of the chain of command, I don't want to play.

I'd imagine you would want very tight control of the focal plane, so something fast. You will also want to stay out of the way, so something slightly long. A 50/1.2 would be great, but my 50/1.8 could do as well. Whose funeral?

The only thing Yahoo I have is Flickr. I should have known better than to trust my stuff to a third party. I hope Google allows custom pages on their web hosting soon.

    Rethinking the Meat-Guzzler

I grew up in the "Salad Bowl of the World", where lettuce was grown in fields starting one block from my house and stretching on to the horizon. The best lettuce, celery, artichoke, strawberries, any many more are grown there year round. This produce has never been iced, the tractor towing a...

    42" HDTV recomendations?

Depends on what you want to do with it. If all you want is to watch movies than just about anything will do. If you want some hardcore gaming action, get an 8800GT, it is awesome and great bang-for-the-buck. I use a DVI - HDMI converter cable for video and coaxial SPDIF to a receiver for audio.

    FairTax

It does, just to a lesser degree. Someone who makes $1M/yr doesn't use the roads, police, or schools 20x more than someone who makes $50k/yr. In fact, even though they pay for public schools, it's likely that they would pay for private schools as well.

    FairTax

It is fair. But long ago we decided that instead of just being fair, that taxes would take on a "Robin Hood" role of wealth distribution. It is (a bit) better for the society as a whole. But don't say that the wealthy paying more is fair. It's a good idea, but it isn't fair.

I play games on my 42" 1080P hooked up to my computer, and it kicks the ass of any console. It better, considering the cost, but it really is. What punishment for illegal abortion...?

I was trying to sell her on the buy one/get one free mentality. That what her religion really wanted was big happy families, not single moms who couldn't support their kids. She disagreed, saying that every child should be born. No wonder we're going to lose this...they'll just out number us.

    Beverages

I know some things about Champagne, though I prefer Veuve-Clicquot to most of them. In wine, I stick to Cabernet and Merlot. My favorite "cheap stuff" is Page Mill Winery and Galante Vineyards. It's easy to like the stuff that costs $100+ per bottle. Finding good wine for less is the adventure.

Sounds good Merc, though I will be reducing the spice by a factor of 10 or so. I'll also probably throw in some flank steak that I've marinated in tequila and lime juice and seared on the grill. (That is my favorite topping for pizza, BTW).

I agree that we need to get the debt eliminated, but I'm sure I could find a way to do it without raising taxes. Multiple-office file server

Sweet guys. I had them just order three smoothwalls and three whitebox 1TB servers to handle this. I'll have a while to play with it before it goes live. The smoothwalls are going to be fun; each office has 2 internet connections (T-1 and Cable/DSL) that should be tied in somehow. One of the...
