I don't think he's tired of his 1D-III yet ;). I'll certainly buy a 40D when I get home (unless anyone here is willing to sell me a used model). But I'll likely fix the 20D as well, it would be nice to have a spare body for larger trips.

Looks to be ~$180 for just the shutter, and ~$350 for the shutter, SQ assembly, and cleaning. People are talking about this happening every 70k or so? What is an "SQ Assembly"?

Thanks for the info, I'll get that fixed when I get home. Any idea on the cost? I would go buy a 40D right now, but from what I can tell the warranty wouldn't apply in the states? There also doesn't seem to be an official Canon presence here? Canon.com doesn't include a location in Russia, and...

Looks like my 20D has gone belly-up. Error 99 with constant shooting. It also snaps off a few any time I add/remove a lens, open/close the battery compartment, insert a battery, open/close the CF door, add/remove the CF card - even when the camera is off. The only event that doesn't cause this...

I wouldn't watch the movie while I had it; there are a number of scenes where the camera work would be messing with you (odd angles, no points of reference, random movement). There is a tango dancer in the community that has it permanently. She can only stand if she doesn't let go of you, but...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Based on the near-linear $/gb increase for SSD drives, I decided to get multiple smaller ones in RAID0. At the time 3x16GB were just a little more than 1x32GB, and much faster.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Still looks like a $600 outlay for that kind of speed I'm afraid. If it is a linear write/read for the temp file, a pair of RAID0 Raptors would five you more speed for less.

    dSLR thread

I have the original 18-55 that Tony gave me with the camera. Unfortunately, it is fairly beat up, so shooting at high f-numbers causes the scratches to become visible. I'm really enjoying using the 10-22 @ f29. The DOF is really awesome.

A 20D (though I sense a 40D is in my near future). I'm taking Tony's advice and keeping it at 400ISO or under. I'm not running around Moscow with a tripod, so faster exposures are a must. I'm really looking forward to getting a good light tripod and working with longer exposures.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Nope, I meant 1952. Bozo is right, most weren't repatriated at all, but died here as laborers even after the war was over. Here is a very nice write-up on window technologies since the 70s.

I'm loving this 10-22. I'm sure that I'm using it more than I should, that many of the pictures I've taken would have benefited from my 35/2 (which is a very nice lens). But it's a new toy, and I like the different perspective it brings.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

I'm not really sure either. I'm still researching the concepts of superinsulation. If the objective is to reduce our demands for energy, specifically fossil fuels, than heating and cooling less is better than more. My time here in Moscow is making this more apparent. Here, double-pane windows...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Either heating or cooling year round is bad idea. We heat about 3 months of the year and cool never. Even when we do heat, it's a 10 degree difference. I'm not saying that massive amounts of insulation can't correct a big part of that, but I am saying that living in a poorly insulated house or...
